The Toronto Film Festival is awash with international titles. Led by Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed Of The Sacred Fig” and Gints Zilbalodis’ “Flow,” the festival’s huge Centrepiece spread alone has 38 titles from outside Canada and the U.S. The Discovery section has another 18.
Not all Toronto international titles are world premieres, however. Here are 16 which are sparking good word of mouth. Variety isn’t claiming they are the best. The buzz might not be justified. But they are certainly worth tracking.
“Sunshine,” (Antoinette Jadaone, Philippines)
Anima, the Filipino studio behind Erik Matti’s Venice winner “On The Job 2: The Missing 8” and Sundance winner “Leonor Will Never” Die, joined Project 8 Projects to co-produce Antoinette Jadaone’s teenage pregnancy drama “Sunshine.” It turns on a young gymnast who discovers she is pregnant on the week of the national team tryouts. Maybe you remember The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Maybe you don’t. We wouldn’t blame you if the details regarding this pulpy 2017 buddy comedy had faded from your memory banks like so much post-headshot pink mist. Ryan Reynolds is a disgraced bodyguard. Samuel L. Jackson is a hitman who’s supposed to testify at the Hague in a war-crimes trial. The two end up bickering a lot and saving each other’s lives, things get blowed up real good, Jackson says “motherfucker” a lot, yadda yadda yadda. As a bonus,...

While insurance companies and other financiers worldwide have excluded Covid-19 from their policies, Melbourne-based Elevate Production Finance (Epf) is stepping into the breach.
Backed by Australian and international institutions and private equity, Epf is prepared to immediately provide debt funding to film and television productions in Australia and New Zealand despite the pandemic.
Managing director Craig McMahon, who founded Epf in 2018, tells If: “We have the ability to take on a significant amount of work. We are excited to re-open our doors to producers seeking debt finance for their productions.
“The landscape has significantly changed, producers have had to adjust to new working environments and as a lender, we have responded swiftly by reviewing our lending protocols.
“These new protocols will enable us to consider projects impacted by the lack of Covid-19 coverage within insurance policies and completion guarantees, which is a crucial first step in redefining our lending conditions.

Over the years, Ryan Kwanten has endeared himself to genre fans with his work on True Blood, or on films like Dead Silence, Knights of Badassdom, and Red Hill (which is a highly underappreciated revenge-fueled thriller that this writer dug). Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Kwanten, and he discussed the True Blood connection to Sacred Lies by way of Raelle Tucker, the showrunner for the Blumhouse Television series, and how her involvement was one of the biggest reasons he wanted to get involved with the 10-episode second season of Sacred Lies. John Brumpton in ‘Measure for Measure.’
One of Australia’s hardest working actors, John Brumpton rarely turns down offers – except when he is asked to work for free.
In the past year he has played a rapist in Stephen Johnson’s Western High Ground, a gunslinger in the second season of Mystery Road, Hugo Weaving’s protector in Paul Ireland’s Measure for Measure and a worried dad in Jamie Helmer and Michael Leonard’s short The Diver, which premieres in competition in Venice.
IMDb lists 95 credits for the actor who made his screen debut in The Flying Doctors in 1989 and took up the profession after working as a surveyor and professional boxer.
“It’s a tough industry and surviving this long is an achievement,” he tells If. “My approach is: ‘Just be yourself.’”

WestEnd Films has closed North American and European deals on “Swinging Safari,” Stephan Elliott’s Australian comedy. Blue Fox has taken U.S. and Canada rights and will release the film theatrically early this summer.
Elliott wrote and directed the film, which is set in mid-1970s Australia and stars Guy Pearce (“Iron Man 3”) and Kylie Minogue (“Moulin Rouge!”).
It is set in the beach suburb of Dee Why. When the town suddenly hits the spotlight after the body of a 200-ton whale is washed ashore, teenagers Jeff and Melly think it’s the biggest thing that’s ever happened in their lives. Meanwhile, their eccentric parents are catching up with the sexual revolution that has also washed up on Australia’s beaches.
The U.S. deal was negotiated by Blue Fox Entertainment’s Todd Slater with WestEnd Films’ Maya Amsellem negotiating on behalf of the filmmakers.

Though it’s clear The Hitman’s Bodyguard, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds, is built to be action-comedy comfort food, it’s a bit too comfortable for its own good. Directed by Patrick Hughes (responsible for the underseen gem Red Hill), there are more than a few bright spots here unfortunately undermined by a laborious third act finale and a lingering cynicism that leaves a bad taste by the time the credits roll.
A couple of years after top-rated bodyguard Michael Bryce (Reynolds) lost a high-profile client on his watch, he finds himself slumming it with sleazy corporate gigs while pining for both his once-promising career and romance with Interpol agent Amelia Roussel (Elodie Yung). After Roussel’s team is ambushed while transporting infamous hitman Darius Kincaid (Jackson) to testify against the evil leader of Belarus (Gary Oldman), she turns to her ex-flame to help get the job done.

This is the tour that would mark an historic occasion. Not only is it the 30th anniversary of U2’s phenomenally successful The Joshua Tree album, but the third time I was to see the band live. Yep, the hat-trick was in sight in London on Sunday, July 9, and as Twickenham Stadium, the home of English rugby, loomed large, it still wasn’t quite sinking in.
To be honest, I’d only decided late on in April to try and purchase tickets for this landmark tour. On the subject of punctuality, my apologies for only just getting around to writing this review – the traditional U2 withdrawal symptoms have only just left me. The Irish rockers’ previous two albums, 2014’s Songs of Innocence and 2009’s No Line on the Horizon, had left me somewhat underwhelmed. That’s not to say that they weren’t both decent efforts, but when you talk...

Summit Entertainment and Millenium Films has today unveiled a brand new trailer for their anticipated action-comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which you can view in the player below!
The new film stars Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Life) and Samuel L. The second trailer, however, goes all out on the action front as well as a whole host of R-rated humour for which Reynolds and Jackson are dab hands at. In the film, Reynolds plays the world’s leading bodyguard and is offered a new job: guarding one of the world’s leading hitmen (Jackson) – but, as you would have expected,...

The winner of this year’s Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema Dramatic films at Sundance, the first trailer has been released for Slow West, the revisionist Western from first time filmmaker John Maclean, and it’s anything but slow.
The young Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road, Let Me In) plays a traveler from Scotland on a quest across the West to save his love from a “Dead or Alive” bounty placed on her life. Michael Fassbender is Silas Selleck, a mysterious drifter who accompanies him and teaches him about survival in this region. Slow West also stars Ben Mendelsohn and Rory McCann. Here’s the full plot description via IMDb:
‘Slow West’ follows a 16-year-old boy on a journey across 19th Century frontier America in search of the woman he loves, while accompanied by mysterious traveler Silas.
Two of our initial reviews out of Sundance, one from Dylan Griffin and another from Lane Scarberry,...

Getting to go to Sundance this year was an incredible experience, the weather was surprisingly not terrible, I had great conversations in line with people, and almost every film of the 20 that I saw was good to great. Some of them will likely stick with me all year and end up on my top 10 of 2015 list. Before we get to my top 5 of Sundance though, I do want to take a moment and give a shout out to some of the films that I hate myself for not seeing.
-
Films I hate myself for not seeing:
The Witch
Written and Directed by Robert Eggers
This was the only film at the festival that I wasn’t able to get in through the waitlist. That’s great for the film, but it broke my perfect record and I couldn’t see this film that had the festival going crazy for it.

Slow West
Written and Directed by John Maclean
United Kingdom/New Zealand, 2015
After the film finished, writer and director John Maclean acknowledged how surreal it felt to be premiering a western at Sundance of all places. After all, John Ford filmed many of his classics in the state of Utah, making it a sort of mecca of westerns. This however is very different from the traditional western as it is seen through a foreign lens and with a postmodern knowledge. It calls to mind other revisionist westerns from this century such as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Proposition and Red Hill. The plot takes place in 1870 and follows 16-year-old Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who has traveled from Scotland to the American west to find his love, Rose (Caren Pistorius). Accompanying him is a mysterious and formidable drifter, Silas Selleck (Michael Fassbender).

Though some might argue that The Expendables 3 was one big movie flub in itself (sure it has its moments, but the sequel fell flat), there were some real bloopers on the set of the action flick. We're used to seeing gag reels for comedies, especially with all the alternate takes many directors try out, but there's something even more endearing and fun about seeing stars like Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, Kelsey Grammer and Harrison Ford laughing after messing up a take during production. There's a lot of downtime on action films, so it's good to see not everyone is dead serious all the time while filming. Watch! Here's the gag reel for Patrick Hughes' The Expendables 3 from Collider: The Expendables 3 is directed by Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) and written by Sylvester Stallone and Olympus Has Fallen scribes Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt. The pop star was performing as a Christian artist back in 2001.
So this is Katy Perry's teenage dream!
New video has surfaced online of the pop superstar on her very first tour back in 2001. Performing as a Christian artist under her real name (Katy Hudson) at the time, Perry talks songwriting, humble beginnings and her already strained relationship with her parents in the clip.

Cinematographer Jim Standridge posted the 13-minute video on Vimeo after apparently unearthing 90 minutes of footage while cleaning his office recently. “I was very fortunate to meet and hangout with this genuine talent in the beginning of her career,” he writes in the video caption.

Though it's a far cry from her current music, Perry's 2001 performances show that there's more to the artist than candy colored costumes and catchy hooks. In fact, she...

Katy Perry wasn't always a walking neon dreamsicle, giving serious side eye with her new bestie Sam Smith and wearing all-denim homages to 2001-era Britney Spears at the VMAs. In 2001, she was a 16-year-old Christian singer-songwriter who was repeating the ninth grade for the second time, and she wore un-ironic denim jackets. Videographer Jim Standridge discovered footage he shot of Perry during her first tour in 2001, when she was doing a show in Portland, Oregon, to celebrate signing with Red Hill Records, with whom she would release her first album, Katy Hudson.Standridge put together a 13-minute clip (from 90 minutes of footage), in which we see Perry practicing guitar riffs, putting her hair in pigtails, and calling herself a "pizza face." Back then, she was into Patty Griffin and Nichole Nordeman (a Christian singer-songwriter), but like the Perry we know and love, she was still into makeup. "Everyone...

Ah, "The Expendables" franchise. Much like the actors who star in the movie -- it just won't die. Every couple of years we're #blessed with one of these movies, which feature a bunch of past-their-prime action stars, many of whom were vastly more popular 30 years ago, embroiled in some kind of scenario where they have to fire round after round of high powered weapon while cracking wise and acknowledging, at least to a certain degree, that they've all gotten very old.
If the trailers are any indication, "The Expendables 3" is the last film in the franchise (the words "One Last Ride" keep being thrown around). So they've rounded up all the old folks (among them: Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Robert Davi, Wesley Snipes and Kelsey Grammer) and placed all kinds of guns in their hands and sent them about their business.

★★☆☆☆Sylvester Stallone and his ragtag team of aging action heroes return in the much-pirated The Expendables 3 (2014), the third and potentially final entry in the preposterous, testosterone-fuelled franchise. However, as persistent and mildly diverting as it proves on a surface level, this latest outing is pretty vacant underneath, with only the bare outlines of a script to sustain it over an exasperating two-hour-plus runtime. Under the helm of Red Hill (2010) director Patrick Hughes, The Expendables 3 finds Barney (Stallone) and his cronies back out on the field, only to come face-to-face with the evil Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson, back from the wilderness), a formidable foe whom they believed to be Kia.

Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. "It's all under control...!" Amidst the controversy and chaos of an early pirated leak, Lionsgate has debuted one last trailer for Patrick Hughes' The Expendables 3, the action movie extravaganza that has a PG-13 rating to top off all your questions and confusion. In addition to Stallone, pretty much all your favorite action stars are in this even if just for a minute, from Jason Statham to Jet Li to Antonio Banderas to Wesley Snipes to Dolph Lundgren to Harrison Ford and Arnold. But is it worth seeing? That's up to you. I've pretty much had enough across all three trailers so far, now I'm just wondering when we'll get the R-rated cuts of these movies. Or is that asking for too much? Anyway - enjoy this 66-second trailer below. Here's the third and final trailer for Patrick Hughes' The Expendables 3, in high def from Apple: The Expendables 3...

Following the colorful pop art posters featuring the whole cast of The Expendables 3, we get to see them in action and on the set of the action sequel. There's some cool new footage, including a great joke from Wesley Snipes, and also some brief talking heads from the likes of Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone and more. Some of these bits should actually be in the trailers, showing that the film is very self-aware, especially with jokes about how kicking down the door with guns blazing would be cool if it was 1995 (which is what you could say about this whole series). If this is the end for Expendables, hopefully it's a big blast. The roll call teaser trailer for The Expendables 3 is an exercise in patience as every cast member of the huge action ensemble is mentioned by name. And with such a huge cast that includes veterans like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger to younger faces like Ronda Rousey and Kellan Lutz, the film is ripe for a whole slew of character poster. The first batch of character posters looked like cheesy yearbook portraits that were done at Sears on a Sunday after family brunch. This new batch is kinda fun as all the characters get a colorful pop art treatment, though Andy Warhol probably wouldn't approve. Following last week's extended TV spot for The Expendables 3, two more have popped up showing off some of the new team members, and the new mission that Sylvester Stallone has to embark on to save them with even more geriatric action heroes. Basically, some of the new young bucks like Ronda Rousey and Kellan Lutz get captured by a former ally and co-founder of The Expendables (Mel Gibson), and it's up to the old crew, with some new faces like Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford, to get them back. It's been teased as one final ride for this team, so let's hope this one goes out with a big bang, even if it's PG-13. Here's the two new TV spots for Patrick Hughes' The Expendables 3 from Lionsgate & YouTube: The Expendables 3 is directed by Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) and written by Sylvester Stallone and Olympus Has Fallen scribes Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt.

There are a ton of new/old faces in this full trailer for The Expendables 3: Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson and... Kelsey Grammer? Awesome.
This new (and perhaps final) installment was directed by Red Hill director Patrick Hughes. It's a big leap forward for the Australian newcomer, but from the looks of it he was able to go as big as the cast he was working with.
In terms of the quality of The Expendables films, listen: You know if you're down with this sh*t.

"How hard can it be to kill 10 men?" Time for more. More guns, more action, more explosions, more actors, more of everything. Even more women! Another trailer for Patrick Hughes' sequel The Expendables 3, a full-length trailer featuring the entire cast, has debuted. From Stallone to Statham to Li, they've got the original crew of Expendables back, but of course there's also Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer and Randy Couture stuffed in here, too. The idea of a remake of Indonesian action sensation "The Raid" without the bonkers, surely-someone-must-have-died action genius of director Gareth Evans, or with the presumably lax approach to health and safety that's the only way some of the insanity of the film (and its even crazier sequel) could have been pulled off, seems somewhat pointless. But nevertheless, Screen Gems have been pressing on, with "Red Hill" and "The Expendables 3" helmer Patrick Hughes attached to direct, and they just made a hire that means we might have a sliver of interest in the prospect. The excellent Frank Grillo, who broke out in the last few years thanks to "Warrior," "The Grey" and, most recently, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," in which he played a villainous Hydra agent, has told We Got This Covered that he's signed on to star in the remake of "The Raid." The actor was said to...

In the latest news story to remind me why I sometimes detest Hollywood with a burning passion, Screen Gems’ remake of Gareth Evans’ Indonesian action classic, The Raid: Redemption is moving forward with plans to roll cameras in September, according to helmer Patrick Hughes.
Hughes just came off The Expendables 3, which is set to open this summer. He also directed the little-seen Ryan Kwanten vehicle Red Hill, so there’s not much to his resume yet. Still, Screen Gems seems as confident in their choice of director as they are confident in the wisdom of moving forward with an American remake of an absolutely flawless (not to mention very recent) foreign film.
