The crowds of film sellers and buyers are still rolling into Toronto from Venice and Telluride, but the puck dropped Thursday night on the acquisitions marketplace with the premiere of Nutcrackers.
David Gordon Green has taken a detour from genre to serve up a Ben Stiller-starrer that proved a crowdpleaser in two opening-night showings.
That kind of movie — with promising premises with stars and directors with proven track records — is all over the schedule. There is a lot to like in this 2024 TIFF acquisitions market. But I’ve just come from an L.A. visit and cannot recall as bleak a black cloud hangover from the twin strikes of last year. It will take time for the business to recover, and this caution could factor into the dealmaking. Also on the minds of distributors is how elusive box office has become. Comparable films to the ones on sale here...

Comedy creator Ilana Glazer recently opened up about their evolving understanding of gender. In a recent interview, Glazer said their pregnancy experience shed light on both their masculine and feminine sides. This realization has prompted Glazer to use they/she pronouns and feel more authentic in how they present themselves.
Glazer co-created and starred in the Comedy Central series “Broad City” from 2014 to 2019. In the interview, Glazer reflected on how viewers saw feminist themes in the show, which surprised them. Glazer said they “hadn’t even thought about it like that” when learning it was viewed as feminist.
An episode from 2016 featured a cameo from then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the heated race against Donald Trump. Glazer acknowledged mixed reactions but wanted Clinton to win. While not friends with Clinton, Glazer said she sits “somewhere in the middle” of liking and disliking her as a person.
Comedy is central to Glazer’s work.

Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau star in Pamela Adlon’s exploration of motherhood and friendship. Here’s our Babes review.
Pregnancy is a juicy topic for filmmakers. You can play it for laughs, mine it for horror or simply showcase what an unbelievable process it is to grow a real human being inside you. Like pregnancy, motherhood is another popular subject for storytellers, as is friendship.
Trying to mesh all of these themes together in one film is Pamela Adlon, a first-time feature filmmaker and actress known as the voice of Bobby Hill in King Of The Hill. Babes is part comedy, part drama about the difficulties of maintaining a friendship through motherhood and pregnancy.

Broad City’s Ilana Glazer and stand-up Michelle Buteau play two best friends going through pregnancy in this raunchy comedy from actor-turned-director Pamela Adlon. Crackling with comic chemistry, it’s frequently very funny and pulls off what is essentially a clever riff on the usual rom-com dynamic, but it oddly shies away from its potentially emotional moments, preferring to undercut them with laughs instead.
The film is set in present-day New York, where two best friends – single yoga instructor Eden (Glazer) and married-with-a-kid dentist Dawn (Buteau) – still get together regularly, despite now living in different boroughs that are several subway trains apart. As the film begins, they’re indulging in their annual Thanksgiving ritual of attending a movie together, but that’s cut short when heavily...

After defining goofy millennial aimlessness with her beloved sitcom Broad City, the writer-actor is facing up to motherhood with new film Babes. But don’t worry: she hasn’t grown up too much
Ilana Glazer is trying to think of films about pregnancy and early parenthood that aren’t told from a man’s perspective. “There’s Knocked Up, but that’s about Seth Rogen. And there’s Nine Months, but that’s about Hugh Grant. Three Men and a Baby cracks me up because it’s like, three?!” says the 37-year-old, with comically perfect levels of incredulity (cracking me up in the process).
Glazer – best known as co-creator of the seminal millennial sitcom Broad City – is making a serious point: there are outrageously few movies about birth and babies that centre on the female experience. The comedian’s attempt to rectify this, however, has taken the form of a distinctly unserious film: in fact,...

Amazon is adding another actor to its expanding Bosch universe.
John Carroll Lynch has joined the third show in the franchise, centering on LAPD detective Renée Ballard (to be played by Maggie Q). The untitled series, which will stream on Prime Video, follows Ballard as she takes on running the department’s cold case division — an underfunded, all-volunteer unit with a huge case load. The character has appeared in several of Bosch author Michael Connelly’s novels.
Lynch (American Horror Story, Big Sky) will play Thomas Laffont, a retired former partner of Ballard’s who comes back to help her run the the department. He’s a kind, seasoned detective and crack interrogator.
The spinoff — one of two additional shows set in the same world as both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy — will be set up in the season three finale of the latter series, which is likely to premiere later this year.

John Carroll Lynch is officially set to join Prime Video’s untitled Renée Ballard series, the second spin-off of Amazon MGM’s Prime Video series “Bosch.” The 10-episode project will follow Detective Renée Ballard as she takes charge of the LAPD’s new cold case division.
The show’s official description reads, “When Ballard uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she’ll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch, to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.”
Lynch will play Thomas Laffont, according to a statement from Amazon, “a retired former police partner who comes back to help Ballard run the Cold Case Department. A kind, seasoned detective, and crack interrogator — he’s a rock for Ballard.”
The actor was recently featured in Pamela Adlon’s movie “Babes” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” He also directed Harry Dean Stanton’s final film,...

The comedy series Survival of the Thickest, created by Michelle Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Wittell (New Girl), hasn’t just survived, but thrived — and Season 2 is currently in production in New York.
The ensemble cast of Buteau, Tasha Smith (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), Tone Bell, Liza Treyge, Peppermint (Harlem), and Marouane Zotti will be returning, along with new guest stars Anderson .Paak, Jonathan Chad Higginbotham, Deon Cole, Alecsys Proctor-Turner, Jerrie Johnson, Celisse, Rolonda Watts, Michael Rishawn, Tika Sumpter, Monét X Change, and RonReaco Lee.
Survival of the Thickest is a story only Buteau can tell. Inspired by her acclaimed book of essays of the same name, the first season’s eight episodes follow Mavis Beaumont (played by Buteau), a stylist whose life is blown up after she catches her partner (Taylor Selé) in bed with another woman.

Exclusive: Brothers Kenny and Keith Lucas (Judas and the Black Messiah) are teaming with Mookie Thompson on their first documentary, a project on the unexpected creative partnership between wrestler Swerve Strickland and rapper Derek “Flash Garments” Shaw, which has helped take the former’s career in the ring to new heights.
The doc is set into motion as dreams shatter for Strickland and Garments after getting axed from the WWE and Kanye West’s crew, respectively. Subsequently, the disillusioned duo fuse their unmatched talents to blaze a trailblazing and unprecedented path to superstardom, prophetically merging authentic hip hop culture and wrestling in a way no major promotion ever has. Collaborating to create a new theme song for Strickland, in order to revamp his character by incorporating elements of hip-hop culture, the pair’s work has contributed to Strickland’s surge in popularity and successful run as the first Black champion of All Elite Wrestling.

A new film sits atop the box-office weekend as The Garfield Movie managed to claim the number one slot by the margin of $3.2 million.
After finishing in second place last weekend, The Garfield Movie took over the box-office weekend top ten with $14.0 million in its second weekend of release. This gives the Sony Pictures Releasing offering a two-week tally of $51.6 million, allowing it to finish just $3.2 million ahead of second-place If. The Paramount Pictures product brought in $10.8 million during its third weekend in release, raising its overall total to $80.4 million. Meanwhile, the Warner Bros. film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga dropped two spots, after finishing in first place last weekend, to land in third place with $10.7, just $0.1 million behind If. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes however, held steady in fourth place where it added $8.8 million to raise its four-week total to $140.1 million for 20th Century Studios. Also remaining...

In A Violent Nature, an undead murderous monster’s slow striding through the woods, has generated IFC Films’ second-best opening ever since its indie horror hit Late Night With The Devil in March.
The artsy slasher written and directed by Chris Nash will see an estimated weekend gross of $2.1 million on 1,426 screens, IFC’s widest opening ever, and a no. 8 spot at the domestic box office.
Late Night, by Cameron and Colin Cairnes, which opened to $2.8 million at 1,034 locations, is pushing $10 million. It returns to theaters June 6 and runs through the weekend on about 500 screens.
In A Violent Nature “has been steadily making waves for redefining the classic slasher genre” since its Sundance premiere, said Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks Film Group, calling Nash’s feature debut “a film that will have a lasting impact in the horror space.”

It’s a fairly rare weekend at the box office when there are five new wide releases, but it’s even rare when none of those movies even crack the top six. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After one of the worst Memorial Day weekends in decades, the transition weekend between May and June wasn’t going to be much better with none of the new releases opening in more than 2,000 theaters. That wasn’t helped by the fact that Disney, the one major studio in the mix, decided to dump their latest well-reviewed movie into a few hundred theaters with very little fanfare.
After settling for second place over Memorial Day, Sony Pictures’ animated “The Garfield Movie” moved into first place with an estimated $14 million, down just 42% from its three-day opening weekend, to bring its domestic total to $51.6 million. Overseas, the Chris Pratt-starring family film...

It was reported earlier that The Garfield Movie would be taking first place during the Memorial Day box office weekend, but now that the official numbers are in, we can confirm that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win this weekend and beat out the animated movie as the best movie of this week. The overall earnings for the weekend are not that good, but that is a different issue we are going to discuss later in the article. What is important is that we can confirm that Furiosa won at the domestic box office and that its total gross, including the worldwide revenues, is at $64,800,000, according to the numbers published on Box Office Mojo.
If you remember, some earlier reports claimed that The Garfield Movie would surpass Furiosa, but that ultimately did not happen. And while the difference between the two movies is quite small, George Miller...

Memorial Day is usually one of the biggest and best weekends at the box office, but the warped year that is 2024 at the box office continued with neither of the new wide releases blowing up. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, George Miller‘s prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had scored impressive reviews after its Cannes Film Festival debut with 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Warner Bros. had the film’s stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, just about everywhere promoting the movie. It ended up making $3.5 million from Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, which was less than the $3.7 previews for “Mad Max: Fury Road” back in 2015. It ended up making $10.2 million on Friday, including those previews, which was not a good sign it might reach the $40 million plus projected in advance. Instead, it ended up with $26.3 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated $32 million including Monday.

Update: Comscore has just released the official box office results for the 4-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, and despite some box office pundits predicting that The Garfield Movie would top Furiosa, in the end the George Miller epic was able to hold on to a narrow lead. Comscore has Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earning $32 million compared to Garfield‘s $31.1 million. However, it should be noted that The Garfield Movie only cost about a third of what Furiosa did, so it’s unlikely distributor Sony Pictures will chalk up a loss on this one.
Furiosa will depend heavily on foreign receipts if it’s going to break even, with the movie grossing $33 million internationally. Mad Max: Fury Road made a total of $379 million worldwide, a number that the prequel will likely have a hard time equalling unless word of mouth and repeat business are strong. Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa” pulled out to a narrow lead over Sony/Alcon/Dneg’s “The Garfield Movie,” though that is not much of a victory as the $32 million extended opening earned by the “Mad Max” prequel is part of the worst Memorial Day weekend box office results seen since the 1990s.
“Furiosa” scored the lowest total for a No. 1 Memorial Day film since “Casper” in 1995, while the overall estimated 4-day total of $128 million is a sharp 37% drop from last year’s Memorial Day weekend.
It’s a drop that can be attributed to an industry-wide slump as Hollywood and exhibitors weather weeks of reduced theatrical output due to delays caused by last year’s strikes, including Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has enjoyed exceptional presales but moved from May to late July and left theaters without their customary comic book film boost to kick off the summer.

Yet again, a new film sits atop the box-office weekend top ten as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to stave off fellow newcomer The Garfield Movie by a mere $0.7 million to take the top spot prior to the holiday.
In its first weekend of release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga brought in $25.5 million for Warner Bros., allowing it to finish just ahead of Sony Pictures Releasing’s second-place claimant, The Garfield Movie, which brought in $24.8 million during its debut weekend. Meanwhile, this pushed last weekend’s top film If to third place where it added $16.1 million for Paramount Pictures, bringing its two-week tally to $58.7 million. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dropped two spots as well, landing in fourth place this weekend with $13.4 million. This gives the 20th Century Studios film a three-week total of $122.8 million. The Memorial Day Weekend we’d all like to forget: Any claims to #1 are premature. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.) and “The Garfield Movie” (Sony) are in a battle for #1 for the four-day holiday, but each only estimates around $25 million for Friday to Sunday. (“Furiosa” is ahead.)
This is a holiday release date often chosen for a film that’s expected to be among the top three of the year. Unadjusted, neither “Furiosa” nor “Garfield” would be among the top 50 openers historically for this particular weekend; adjusting to current ticket prices, not even the top 100.
Current estimates for the four-day weekend are $101 million, but the crisis lies in the whole month. May is supposed to kick off summer and it has failed. It confirms that post- “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” box-office depression has no end in sight.

“If” (Paramount) may have fallen short of its anticipated $40 million opening, but the glass is at least half-full. Preview and initial numbers suggested it could end up around $28 million; instead, its initial estimate is $35 million.
That improvement, along with its A Cinemascore, suggests a film that could stick around. It would be a real boost for the cause of original non-franchise production. Domestic on “If” is better than foreign, which stands at $24 million, $20 million from this weekend. That puts it at $59 million worldwide.
The full weekend is projected to hit $99 million. If that becomes $100 million, it would mark the first time since Easter. By comparison, 2023 saw every weekend from April 7 through mid-August hit that level. In 2019, with significantly lower ticket prices, that was the case from post-Super Bowl through Labor Day.

The summer box office is supposed to be the time of year when popular movies can flourish, but this May has not been an ideal start to the season, with another highly anticipated film falling below expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
With the general lack of family films in theaters — allowing movies like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and even “Godzilla x Kong” to do very well — Paramount Pictures had very high hopes for John Krasinski‘s “If,” opening it in 4,041 theaters nationwide. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming (with Krasinski in a small role as the latter’s father), the movie received poor to mixed reviews with just 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics not having been swayed by the film’s sweet family-friendly sentimentality.

MGM/Imax’s The Blue Angels lands a hefty $1.3 million on just 255 domestic Imax screens from limited showtimes in the large format exhibitor’s exclusive theatrical engagement. The Paul Crowder film, with Glen Powell and Bad Robot as producers, follows the Navy’s famed demonstration flying squadron. It also “ushers in a new era for IMAX Documentaries, or Docu-busters,” the company said. It’s no. 9 at the domestic box office
It’s got a weeklong run before hitting Prime Video. The feature-length version for Imax multiplex locations will be followed later by a 45-minute, traditional Imax documentary version for Imax institutional locations.
I Saw The TV Glow from A24 had an impressive expansion, grossing $1+ million on just 469 screens. The Jane Shoenbrun (We’re All Going To The World’s Fair) coming of age sci-fi stars Justice Smith and Bridgette Lundy-Paine as queer teenagers navigating life in the 1990s suburbs. The film has...

Babes by Pamela Adlon, co-written and starring Ilana Glazer, debuts in limited release with films by Hang Song-soo and Bertrand Bonello and docs on a controversial Venice Biennale, ground-breaking female clerics, and the Blue Angels Navy Squadron. A trio of festival favorites expand. While eyes now are on fare at Cannes — where Neon has been making high-profile moves — each week Stateside remains a test of indie film’s theatrical boundaries in a post-Covid, streaming-centric marketplace.

Léa Seydoux’s latest feature will be distributed by Neon.
Seydoux stars in “The Unknown (L’Inconnue),” which will be written and directed by Academy Award-winning “Anatomy of a Fall” screenwriter Arthur Harari. The plot details for the film are still under wraps, with production looking to be completed in early 2026.
Neon will release the film in U.S. and Canadian theaters. “The Unknown” will be produced by Bathysphere, with Pathé co-producing and selling the film internationally in Cannes.
“The Unknown” is the third feature both written and directed by Harari. He previously directed “Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle,” which opened Un Certain Regard at Cannes and went on to win numerous awards including the Best Original Screenplay César. Women are humanities original 3-D printers! We can grow humans inside our bodies. However, that’s just the beginning of the journey of motherhood as things get much more difficult from there. Who better then to portray the ups and downs of raising children than Better Things creator Pamela Adlon, director of Babes and written by half of the Broad City creator duo Ilana Glazer, and co-writer Josh Rabinowitz. The complexities of modern motherdom are mined for both humor and pathos, but despite its noble intentions and moments of insight, the film often veers into the realm of the cringe-worthy rather than crafting the poignant commentary one might hope for from such a talented team.
The story centers on Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau), childhood best friends whose lives have diverged yet remain intertwined through their shared experiences of womanhood and growing up in NYC. Dawn, a meticulous dentist...

In “Babes,” Neon’s raucous comedy about the intricate emotional threads that are tested when best friends become new mothers, there’s a particularly rousing scene where Eden (Ilana Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) lose their minds on mushrooms. In need of a night away from their troubles, the lifelong pals hole up in Eden’s Queens apartment to let loose a little — Ok, to let loose a lot — and it’s up to director Pamela Adlon to capture it all.
“So it’s 2:30 in the morning and they’re screaming,” Adlon said. “Michelle’s like, ‘Fuck yeah!’ Milk is squirting out of her tits. People are just screaming. Then, all of a sudden, I hear another scream and I’m like, ‘That’s not them.’ And I turn around and there’s a woman from the building in the apartment going, ‘Shut the fuck up! It’s 2:30 in the morning!

Transitioning the naturalistic comic sensibilities that made Better Things a success, Pamela Adlon’s feature debut Babes manages to co-opt the rhythms of a romantic comedy to explore the relationship between two best friends at opposite points of their lives.
Eden and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) have been friends for 27 years. Married with one child and another on the way, Dawn seemingly has her life together, whereas Eden runs a yoga studio out of her apartment and doesn’t imagine settling down anytime soon. After an opening that sees Dawn go into labor during a ritual Thanksgiving-morning movie, Eden has a meet-cute with charismatic actor Claude (Stephan James). One midnight subway ride and sexual encounter later, Eden finds herself pregnant and staring down raising a baby alone. With her pregnancy she begins to increasingly lean on Dawn, who struggles with her husband Marty (Hasan Minhaj) to raise two children and balance a career.
