Exclusive: Marco Pontecorvo’s Fatima, the first title to be released by Bob and Jeanne Berney’s revived Picturehouse, is going wide in 1,000 runs on Aug. 14, Deadline has learned.
The faith-based movie about the Virgin Mary’s appearance to a 10-year old shepherd and her two cousins in Fátima, Portugal, was acquired by Picturehouse back in October, in Bob Berney’s first big move post Amazon where he served as Head of Marketing and Distribution. Fatima was originally scheduled for an April 24 release, however, was delayed due to the exhibition shutdown during the coronavirus pandemic.
In the movie, the children’s revelations inspire believers but anger Church and government officials, who try to force them to recant their story. As word of their prophecy spreads, tens of thousands of religious pilgrims flock to the site in hopes of witnessing a miracle, and what they experience changes lives forever. Interestingly enough...

In “The Jesus Rolls” — John Turturro’s film imagining the trajectory of his iconic “Big Lebowski” character Jesus Quintana — he’s just out of prison and is now “on the road, flat broke, hanging loose.”
And yeah, it’s still his style to lick his bowling balls before throws a strike.
The first full trailer for the film reveals a comedic road trip movie and love story that shows Jesus and his fellow misfists Petey (Bobby Cannavale) and Marie (Audrey Tautou) embarking on a freewheeling joyride of petty crime and romance. Just don’t ask how many times they’ve all been around the block.

John Turturro’s bowling legend “The Jesus” from “The Big Lebowski” was always destined for cult status. Twenty-two years after being first introduced in Joel and Ethan Coen’s stoner comedy classic, Turturro’s freewheeling bowler will return to theaters courtesy of “The Jesus Rolls.” Directed, written by, and starring Turturro, “Jesus Rolls” is the “Big Lebowski” spinoff we never knew we needed, and based on this latest full trailer, it’s shaping up to be a wild ride with a terrific comic ensemble.
Set for release in theaters and on demand from Screen Media on March 6, the movie reunites “Big Lebowski” fans with Jesus Quintana (Turturro) as he teams up with fellow misfits Petey (Bobby Cannavale) and Marie (Audrey Tautou) on a raucous joyride of petty crime.
While Turturro’s character is said to nod heavily to “The Big Lebowski,” the actor/filmmaker is more directly remaking Bertrand Blier’s 1974 French comedy “Going Places,...

Marvel's Cloak & Dagger is filled with talented actors, including its lead star, Aubrey Joseph. The 20-year-old Brooklyn native got his start acting on Broadway, portraying Simba in the iconic musical The Lion King. Now, he stars as Tyrone Johnson, aka Cloak, one of the badass superheroes in Freeform's newest series (which we're already obsessed with). While the show might be his breakout role, Joseph has racked up a few other acting credits on his résumé over the years, including a role in NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and HBO's Emmy award-winning series The Night Of.
You might also recognize his (very handsome) face from movies like Fading Gigolo with Liev Schreiber, Sharon Stone, and Sofia Vergara, or from the 2015 action thriller Run All Night with Liam Neeson and Common. His talent is undeniable, and fans will get a chance to see him flex his...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Simply a lovely film, with some of the most striking — and haunting — animation I’ve ever seen, and full of a remarkable and palpable warmth and humanity. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The animation style may be a bit of a tipoff: My Life as a Zucchini is not going to be an easy film. The haunting claymation features people with sallow faces and shadowed eyes on oversized heads, tragedy and pain made bloatedly manifest on their bodies. And these people are mostly children: orphans abandoned by life, which has turned them either bullying or neurotic or withdrawn or just plain sad. Some parents may feel that this is not a film suitable for children, but I disagree: kids’ sympathy (and that of adults,...

The full cast for the upcoming TV series adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist has been revealed and the most notable star is Vikings actress Alyssa Sutherland.
The series will tell the story of "a foreboding mist that arrives in one small town ushering in a terrifying new reality for its residents, putting their humanity to the test." According to THR, Sutherland will play Eve Cunningham, “a wife and mother who fights to protect her teenage daughter from unknown dangers lurking both inside and outside the mist while facing down her past.”
I’m a big fan of this story. It one of my favorites that King has written and I also thought the movie directed by Frank Darabont was great, so I’m looking forward to this series and I have high hopes for it.

Condemned director Eli Morgan Gesner spoke with Daily Dead about the film and the Q&A is featured after the jump. Also in this round-up: preview pages from Dark Horse's Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 Vol. 3 hardcover comic and a cool monster creator website from the team behind 20th Century Fox's Victor Frankenstein.
Condemned: "Fed up with her parents’ bickering, poor-little-rich-girl Maya (Dylan Penn) moves in with her boyfriend, who is squatting in an old condemned building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. With neighbors that are meth heads, junkies and degenerates, this depraved hell hole is even more toxic than it appears: After a virus born from their combined noxious waste and garbage infects the building’s residents, one by one, they succumb to a terrifying pathogen that turns them into bloodthirsty, rampaging killers and transforms their building into a savage slaughterhouse.

Sometimes creativity comes from the most unexpected of collaborations, and a new example of this is Running Wild – a drama that is about to commence shooting with Sharon Stone newly signed on to star. The production is among the first for Esx Entertainment, which is a partnership between actor and producer Ali Afshar (The Wrong Side Of Right), and oil magnate Forrest Lucas, of Lucas Oil.
The female-led story sees the widowed Stella Davis work with convicts to rehabilitate a herd of wild horses, and save her ranch. The morality tale will see Stella battle bigotry and corruption, and will feature Sharon Stone in the role of Meredith – essentially the villain of the piece. Directed by frequent Afshar collaborator Alex Ranarivelo (the Born To Race video franchise), with a script by veteran TV actress and first-time writer Christina Moore and Brian Rudnick (Not Quite An Angel), Running Wild is, for all intents and purposes,...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Despite the modest wider success of "Far from the Madding Crowd," better-than-expected results for "I'll See You in My Dreams" and decent grosses for "Iris," it's been seven weeks since a platformed film has earned a per screen average above $20,000. It's not the season. In the same period last year, "Fading Gigolo," "Locke," "Belle" and "Chef" all surpassed that, and "Ida" was just behind. (When "Far from the Madding Crowd" opened in several cities, that lowered its average.). Plenty of high quality films are being released every week. And while the first part of the year yielded several strong post-Oscar specialty releases, since then the market has stalled. "Results" (Magnolia), "Heaven Knows What" (Radius/Weinstein) and "Gemma Bovary" (Music Box) all scored top theaters in their initial markets and mostly good reviews, but none came...

“The D Train” is a head-scratcher of a film, and not in a good way. Written and directed by Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (the duo behind Jonah Hill’s short-lived animated series, “Allen Gregory”), the comedy stars Jack Black as Dan Landsman, a man still yearning for approval from high school classmates. He wasn’t popular when he graduated 20 years ago, and he still isn’t. He’s a social outcast, a guy who never really fit in and longs for adoration and acceptance. Despite this driving desire, Dan has a loving and attractive wife (Stacey, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn), an affectionate 14-year-old son (Russell Posner, “Fading Gigolo”), and an infant daughter. Given all he has at home — which, held up to the light of Dan’s social shortcomings, never achieves believability — you’d expect him to be more than content. Yet, he’s not. He barely acknowledges Stacey,...

It was their parents' shining moment together on screen. But Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe's kids have no interest in seeing Cruel Intentions – and no wonder!
The actors have talked about the 1999 film with daughter Ava, 15, and son Deacon, 11, and even showed them places in Central Park where some scenes were shot. But the kids have no intention of watching it, Witherspoon, 39, said Thursday on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live.
"They have this Cruel Intentions play in L.A. that's like a musical. So I was going to take them to that. But they haven't seen it," she said.

Sofia Vergara has made a name for herself playing ditzy and adorable characters who also happen to be both strong and passionate. Yet for me, it's always been the same character. Audiences love Vergara's animated, over-the-top approach to comedy as evidenced by her acclaimed work on TV and in the performances she's given for directors such as Garry Marshall and Robert Rodriguez. This week, the actress gets top billing alongside Reese Witherspoon in the buddy comedy Hot Pursuit (2015). Vergara and Witherspoon hope for buddy-comedy gold playing a federal witness and the officer protecting her until trial, respectively.
The film is a continuation of that brand of comedy which Vergara has so skillfully honed, yet seldom managed to escape. Her work in Chef (2014) was promising, even if the role itself was limited. Five months after a management team led by Lee and Virgo Investment Group LLC partnered to acquire Millennium's 665 catalog titles and its distribution platform from a consortium of investors, they're calling the new company Alchemy. The key going forward for Lee will be rebranding Alchemy so that the expectations generated by the former management team headed by Avi Lerner no longer apply. Lerner is known for a certain kind of low-budget B-movie that plays off fast and does not demand substantial marketing investment--even when a quality film such as "Bernie," "What Maisie Knew," or "Bad Lieutenant" might need some special handling. Other Millennium releases included "Elsa & Fred," "Fading Gigolo" and "Rampart." Up next Alchemy will release director Barry Levinson’s "The Humbling," starring Al Pacino and Greta Gerwig. The terms of endearment of Shirley Maclaine here are those of love, pure love as she takes three small steps with Christopher Plummer. Even at the ripe old ages of 75 and 80, love is young and ecstatic. And what memories septuagenarians and octogenarians have -- of Fellini, Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastrioanni defining new versions of love. This is a targeted film, made on a budget easily recouped.
Christopher Plummer plays himself as an elegant, gorgeous, refined and gentle man, disguised as an old grump and Shirley plays herself, defining herself as a stunning older woman as beautiful as she was when young. In her case, even her face work is forgivable and almost lovable because she knows, and you know she “knows” you know.
My memories of Rome were awakened by the beauty of the city, my memories of Fellini. This device of making love to the audience, so successful in Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” by allowing the audience’s eyes to caress the city, is also effective here. The movie also triggered my memories of walking and talking at two almost back-to-back film festivals with Michael Radford…for some reason I am thinking Mill Valley or Napa Valley in the fall and the Guadalajara Film Festival (Ficg)…where walking on new streets in new cities, we talked about our lives and his next film (which was not this one) and enjoyed being together in the collegial way festivals sometimes lend themselves to being.
And my memories of Shirley MacLaine, when I was training at 20th Century Fox International in Amsterdam, so homesick that when it was advertised she was playing live, I went to her hotel and introduced myself as working for Fox and welcoming her to Amsterdam. Her first words were she did not work with Fox (was involved in a lawsuit with them?) which I was prompt to report back to my boss, David Raphael. I remember especially her strong hand as she took my wrist and urged me to have tea with her at the hotel where she was staying and dismissed her entourage. We spent a good three hours talking about so many things, as I attempted to explain the Dutch and how I was experiencing my year in Amsterdam, and I felt so much better afterward.
The next thing I heard about her was when I went to 20th Century Fox’s home office to say my good-byes and they told me to go say hello to her as she was filming Herb Ross’ “The Turning Point” (1977) there on the lot of 20th Century Fox. I was too shy unfortunately to go see her. But it was a turning point in my life too.
This is a movie for women of “uncertain age”. It has a great cast, an accomplished director who is reflected in the character of Christopher Plummer. We hope it might cross over, but its budget is reasonable enough that it need not break box office records in order to break even. I notice that Intramovies, one of last two remaining independent international sales agent-production companies to remain standing in Italy (and both are owned by women of un certain age – Paola Corvino of Intramovies and Adriana Chiesa of Adriana Chiesa Enterprises) is the producer who brought in Rome, the eternal city of sacred and profane love.
The film premiered at Afm 2013 where Inferno was selling it. Something has transpired over the past year and Inferno’s product or Inferno itself has morphed into Lotus International (That is a story to look into another time), just as the U.S. distributor, Bill Lee’sMillennium Entertainment (“ Fading Gigolo” by John Turturro for Theatrical, Tv, Dvd-Video, Vod, Airline; “ The Assassin Next Door” (“Kirot”) by Danny Lerner and “Gacy” by Clive Saunders) and not to be confused with NuImage’s Millennium Films, is rumored to be about to change its name.
Lucky for me, I had not seen the Spanish-language original of “Elsa & Fred” directed by Marcos Camerole in 2005. I had heard such great things about it over a year of festivals and markets, but somehow always missed it. That Argentinean-Spanish coproduction won nine prestigious international awards.
It also sold well, although late to the U.S. where DistriMax took the rights (2008). But that is how “foreign” films fare in the U.S. Independent producers and financiers abroad don’t even bother factoring in the U.S. market – except for remake rights, if they are smart enough. But the story and movie itself was so good that it accomplished a rare feat of distribution: it crossed the borders of Latin American countries, something that rarely happens, and sold to both Venezuela - Amazonia Films and Chile - Four Films and played well in Spain -Altafilms Grupo Alta Classics and Argentina -Columbia TriStar Films de Argentina andLk-tel It also sold to Switzerland -Stamm Film Ag and the Netherlands - Filmfreak Distributie, It even sold to Taiwan which is a greater feat for Spanish language films.
According to Box Office Mojo its international gross was almost $3,000,000:

★★☆☆☆The fifth film in his decidedly varied career as a feature director, Fading Gigolo (2013) sees John Turturro helming, writing and starring in a pet project with an altogether different story than those of his previous directorial outings, which dealt with music and theatricality. Soliciting the help of established filmmaker Woody Allen - who both offered advice on the screenplay and co-stars - Turturro's latest tells the tale of an apprehensive male gigolo and his financially troubled cohort who's more than willing to don the role of personal pimp. Allen plays aging bookstore owner Murray, who's forced to close when sales begin to wane before convincing the reluctant Fioravante (Turturro) that there's money to be made in the gigolo business.
