Shout out to Keystone Student, Yesenia Mercado. While participating in a community service event, another volunteer had a medical emergency. Yesenia took immediate action to assist the other volunteer. Keystone Job Corps student helping pack hurricane supplies calls 911 for stricken man By Kent Jackson | kjackson@standardspeaker.com | Standard Speaker PUBLISHED: October 26, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. While Yesenia Mercado and other students at Keystone Job Corps Center were loading a truck with supplies that Hazleton area residents donated to hurricane victims, Yesenia Mercado heard a cry for help. Mercado was walking toward the garage at Blaise Alexander Mazda in Hazle Twp., where students were packing a tractor-trailer on Thursday, when she saw a man lying on the parking lot near a van. “I ran over there to see what happened. He asked me to call 911,” Mercado said. She called and ran inside the dealership and handed her phone to an employee who knew the address. Others gathered around the fallen man, put a jacket beneath his head and talked with him until the ambulance arrived. Mercado said she felt panic when she noticed the man “but I knew I had to make sure I get this man help.” Tony Colombo, a Hazleton councilman who was helping students, said the man fell on a side of the building where he might not have been noticed if the students weren’t present. “It was really a godsend,” Colombo said. While Mercado, who is from Bethlehem, Lehigh County, and has been studying materials handling for two months at the center, had a chance to help immediately, she and others from the Job Corps gave their time so supplies will reach people who lost homes and possessions in the South during Hurricanes Helene and Milton. They filled one truck and prepared supplies to load onto another. “They were a tremendous help,” said Colombo, who thought the students typified how the community pulled together to gather supplies. In three weeks, they collected enough supplies to fill four trucks. “It touches your heart,” said Tony Columbo. .... #JobCorps #Volunteers https://lnkd.in/enqH8awr
