The impacts of this election are already being felt around the globe. Even before President-Elect Trump takes the oath of office, Americans want to know what it will mean. During the last Trump administration, we saw attempts to weaken or dismantle the agencies that protect parks and public lands. We saw attempts to undo environmental protections that had stood for decades. Thanks to our community of park supporters, we were able to stop many of those attacks – and we’re prepared to defend our parks again. We’re staking out a firm position for our parks and we’re strengthening our coalition. Because we know the stakes and we know the threats. To do that, we will: ➕ Work toward a long-term vision for funding a modern National Park System that balances park protection with a skyrocketing number of visitors. ➕ Push Congress and the administration to focus on wildlife habitats and corridors to keep parks healthy. ➕ Keep supporting new parks that commemorate the entire American story – stories from the Asian American and Pacific Islanders, Black, Indigenous, Latino and LGBTQ communities. Add your name to NPCA's transition memo to help build the independent, nationwide coalition that will keep fighting for a better future for our parks while working hard to defend them today here: https://lnkd.in/eZ7_EjEc Since 1919, we have been an independent voice, outside of the government and nonpartisan. We will continue to be that strong, unwavering voice for our parks and all who love them. I know we can count on each other in the days and years ahead. -Theresa Pierno, NPCA President and CEO

California's Rim of the Valley region is rich in natural and historical resources. For nearly a decade, NPCA has spearheaded community-based coalition efforts to advocate for the Rim of the Valley’s national park designation so more families can experience a national park site just outside the Los Angeles city limits. It's been 30 years today that the California Desert Protection Act established Joshua Tree National Park. 🎉 In honor of the park's anniversary, join us in urging the administration to expand Joshua Tree National Park and establish Chuckwalla National Monument through the Antiquities Act. In the face of threats of climate change and habitat loss, this would be a huge victory for protecting critical wildlife habitat, promoting equitable access to nature and preserving our rich cultural history in the California desert. Add your voice! #NationalParks #ParkAdvocate #JoshuaTree #Chuckwalla

Grizzly 399's death is being felt far beyond Grand Tetons National Park, and sparking conversations about the need for projects to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions. From Allison Michalski, NPCA's Northern Rockies connectivity program manager: “As the world’s most-photographed bear, Grizzly 399’s tragic death is also a stark reminder of the responsibility that humans have in making sure wildlife can safely move across large, connected landscapes." #Grizzly399 #GrandTetons #Wildlife #NationalParkNews #ProtectOurParks

NPCA's Linda Coutant weathered Tropical Storm Helene from her western North Carolina home. When she stepped out of her house after six hours of pummeling wind and rain, nearly 50 trees on her property were down. Where she once had a narrow, 20-degree view of surrounding ridges, she now has a 180-degree view. One of her first thoughts was about the beloved Blue Ridge Parkway. She'd learn over the next few days that the parkway had been ravaged, some sections completely obliterated. On our blog, Linda reflects on the physical damage, economic hits, and the challenges ahead for national park sites the area, including Great Smoky Mountains National Park. "Many of us believed that western North Carolina was far enough inland to brave a coastal hurricane. Yet, we find ourselves digging out of the rubble of an unusually powerful storm — and the deadliest to hit the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. "The next step is taking a harder look at how our country addresses climate change… Our national parks and communities deserve to live without fear of massive climate events like Helene." More predictability and better experiences, less guesswork and resources spent on traffic management - that's what a permanent visitation plan would mean for Arches National Park and its visitors. The park just released its draft visitor access and experience plan, and we strongly support making it permanent. #NationalParks #NationalParkAdvocate #PlanBeforeYouPark

Congress made huge strides with the passage of the Great American Outdoors Act, but it’s clear that our parks need more help to protect the natural and cultural resources that tell our nation’s history and ensure parks can continue to welcome millions of visitors each year. We urge Congress to extend GAOA’s maintenance fund by providing at least five more years of needed investment to fix our parks and public lands and keep this successful effort going. #ParkFunding #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct #NationalParks

NPCA was honored to be recognized by Free Rein Coffee Company at an event in Bozeman this week for our efforts to protect Yellowstone National Park. From NPCA's Michelle Uberuaga: “It takes a lot of thoughtful, caring people to address climate change and a growing human footprint in and around Yellowstone. That's something that NPCA really prioritizes, working together to identify the most pressing threats and come up with common solutions to solve those problems.” To help with NPCA's work in parks like Yellowstone and beyond, Free Rein Coffee donated $25,000 at Monday's event. #Yellowstone #FreeRein #NationalParkNews #Bozeman #NationalParks
