#SonyPics Employee Business Resource Group DESI recently hosted their annual Diwali celebration to bring the Festival of Lights to our Culver City studio lot! Diwali is a five-day celebration full of vibrant colors and festive activities symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. #SonyPicsEmployees took part in a diya lighting, dance performances, a “Drapes of Diversity” presentation of South Asian traditional clothing and dress, a henna booth, and tastings of South Asian cuisines. The event was held in partnership with #SonyPicturesTelevision’s The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh. Vijal Patel, creator and executive producer, kicked off the festivities and shared how his personal experiences are brought to life in the new show.

#SonyPicsEmployees attended a Spotlight On conversation moderated by Spring Aspers (President of Music, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group) about #ColumbiaPictures’ Saturday Night, which is based on the real-time telling of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Academy Award-nominated writer and director Jason Reitman, producer Peter Rice, and star Gabriel LaBelle (who played Lorne Michaels) discussed how the story evolved from script to screen, sharing behind-the-scenes anecdotes and memorable experiences from the set.

In honor of UK Black History Month, employee resource groups EM-Powered (Sony Pictures), Represent & Black@PlayStation (Sony Interactive Entertainment), and Helping Unite Everyone (Sony Music Entertainment) came together for a One Sony event titled “Black Culture and Identity in Entertainment.” Panelists Teanne Andrews (We Are Parable), Temi Alchémy (90s Baby Show), and Dr. Clive Nwonka (Associate Professor at University College London and Editor of “Black Arsenal”), along with moderator Jamz Supernova (BBC Presenter), examined the impact of Black British culture in media through the years, the portrayal of Black stories, and what more can be done to give underrepresented people a voice at the table.
