WeGo Public Transit in Nashville, TN recently honored its first Black female bus driver by renaming its central bus station downtown. The Elizabeth Duff Transit Center now bears the name of the woman who was also the agency’s first female driver. She started as a bus operator in 1974 and drove more than 30 years, including several years when there were no female restrooms for drivers. She passed away in 2021, but her son keeps the family tradition alive as a WeGo driver for the last 18 years. #BlackHistoryMonth bit.ly/42JAjJf

I keep seeing articles highlighting how public transit agencies are on the proverbial 'struggle bus.' As an advocate for public transit, specifically a dedicated funding source for public transit, in Nashville, this was in direct opposition to what I have been witnessing as a local transit agency board member for WeGo Public Transit. Month after month, I see the ridership numbers climb higher and higher. At a board meeting late last year, I asked, "What's contributing to this increase in ridership?" "Higher frequency." And it was right there: the higher frequency routes had the highest ridership. WeGo continues to do its best job to implement these transformative service changes and build supportive, more modern infrastructure, but it is limited by funding. I am proud of and also inspired by the work of the WeGo staff and the post-pandemic ridership turnaround. The staff tirelessly surveys riders and constantly monitors data to make sure they are delivering the best service possible with the resources they have.
