A local newspaper in Hawaii has turned to AI-generated presenters to draw in new audiences. In a spacious studio overlooking a tropical beach, James, a middle-aged man who appears to be unable to blink, and Rose, a younger redhead who struggles to pronounce words like “Hanalei” and “TV,” presented their first news broadcast. But there was something deeply off-putting about their performance. James and Rose are #AI avatars crafted by an Israeli company named Caledo, which hopes to bring this tech to hundreds of local newspapers in the coming year. Do you think the decision to invest in #AI rather than real humans is the answer? Have your say in the comments.
