We're in the pets phase of LLMs right now, but the cattle phase is coming and it'll change everything. Yes, again. What do you mean "pets" and "cattle"? Servers used to be our pets. We bought, named, cared for, and persisted them individually. If we wanted a new one, it was a big commitment. If one went down, it was a big loss. But then servers became cattle. Today we manage them as a group of commodity assets. We want one, we clone it. If one goes down, we replace it with another. This change delivered an era of distributed, high availability applications with limited downtime. Cheap storage, containers, cloud, clusters all met riding on top of Moore's law. And machine learning changed too. Computer vision was first. We went from small, neural networks running on CPUs via Matlab to a larger networks running in on GPUs via C++. AlexNet kicked off the deep learning revolution, eventually Transformers in NLP, and then ChatGPT. So, today we call our LLMs by name but this is just the start. There will be more LLMs variations than there are people on Earth.

if you know, you know NVIDIA annual shareholder meeting today: june 26 2024 09:00 pst in about an hour we'll have a chance to listen to new developments. it's breath-taking. the speed of not only NVIDIA's ability to navigate (well i guess they must be using their own (ai) to decide what where how to do and then some. huh?) more importantly just as Apple Microsoft defined the pervasiveness of computers. their applications. we believe NVIDIA holds that position currently. they have been handsomely rewarded in the markets. a valuation as the most valuable in the world. 3.3 trillys. and going. so every and all announcements are truly where the centre of the universe of chip design, manufacturing, exists. it's more than simply offering state of the art chip design for (ai) modelling. where Alphabet Inc. organizes the world's information. NVIDIA makes sense of it. and everyone else applies it, to their subject matter expertise. this is the change that is afoot. at this moment. where it was a race to offer advertisers of services/products a better understanding of their clientele, now the lens is sharper. there is no need to suggest age/sex/ethnicity/generational differences. there are behaviours. theses behaviours are independent of what data was used to point adverts to. to get these people to buy more sh^t. that's the base of the u.s. economy. it's apparently consumer driven. and so in this post pandemic world where it literally stopped. and we were forced to sit still. wait it out as the storm clouds passed. in hopes no one. not us. or loved ones would perish. that time was a generational shift. we all felt. it. no matter what class you were. NVIDIA is the fulcrum Google is the waterfall or Google is the head NVIDIA the neck wherever the neck turns that is where the head has their attention. the neck keeps the attention of the head there. so it appears as if in many ways Google has in essence offered the search part of it's business up for grabs. this is why Perplexity exists, and others. a new dynamic pricing auction model is about to emerge. it will as it is by nature adversarial. let's not fool ourselves. we are designed to be adversarial. it's our nature. and in coveting $$$$$ as the prime objective. money for the sake of money this will destroy a lot of thoughtful, mindful, intentionally beneficial innovation. why? well. it's not playing according to the whims of a recommendation machine that rewards those that are part of it's invisible army. today is a crowning. it's a crown. upon the head of jensen. this is akin to king charles and his crowning. we wonder who will be at the crowning. to recognize this eventful day. it's good to be king. ;) < . > source: https://lnkd.in/eumX4num

🍜Anybody up for some ramen? I am excited to share that I am back in the garage, building again (it’s actually a house in the Berkeley Hills). We are taking the wraps off of Supercog AI, a new startup focused on solving Application Integration using LLM powered agents. My co-founder in this new venture is a great friend of mine (and a former co-founder partner), Alex Osborne. Alex and I have worked around the application integration space for a long time, and we are unrealistically excited about applying the GenAI stack to this problem. Not many people relish the task to get some bits to move from system A to system B. But it’s a critical job to be done, and that’s led to a lot of brittle scripts, a myriad of inflexible “no code” tools, and a lot of hand crafted SQL. But the power of the Large Language Model, trained on a huge corpus of information, offers a remarkable tool to solve this problem. The LLM you use today already knows the APIs of hundreds of popular systems. It knows the SQL dialects of every major database. It understands the semantics and data schemas of many popular SaaS systems. It understands much of the specific domain in which your business operates. I like to call the AI revolution “the last platform shift”. That may turn out to be hyperbole, but I definitely believe we are in the very early stages of seeing what this new stack can enable. I know we are hardly the first folks to claim that “amazing stuff is coming!”. But this is why Alex and I have decided to focus on a real and hard problem. If we can prove that LLMs can power a new way to solve this problem, it will be the first successful *new* approach in 15 years.. We will have much more to share about this new platform soon. Everyone's talking about “founder mode,” but as it gains traction, founders will start using it as an excuse for poor management. Founder mode isn’t a license to run a company at 5,000 the same way you ran it at 5. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, exemplifies what I like to call “scaled founder mode”. Scaled founder mode is being highly involved in the most important things, that only you can do to drive the company forward. Nvidia is one of the most successful tech companies in the world, with a $3 trillion market cap. And Huang, with a 31+ year tenure, is the longest-serving CEO in the industry. He’s a highly effective manager. And he’s still very much in founder mode. When interviewed by Stripe's Patrick Collison, Huang said “CEOs are pinch hitters. We should be working on the things that nobody else can or nobody else is.” Nvidia’s leadership team of 60 reports directly to Huang. But he doesn’t do 1:1s. This way, the team of 60 is relatively flat, with no silos and no privileged access to information. Not saying that killing 1:1s is the answer to speedy execution. But Nvidia found that this way, everyone contributes to solving problems with equal access to important info. And because Huang sees his primary role as being a custodian of the culture, he eats in the cafeteria with employees every single day. At almost 30k employees, you can’t get much more “in the details” than that.

We just completed another Metaverse project (webGL + Web3), which incorporates AI-based terraforming (as far as I know, first of it’s kind). Users will be able to create whatever they want on their land (based on amount of tokens they stake) by simply using text prompts. A few tech highlights: * WebGL platform that is mobile friendly (as long as your device has a browser, you should be able to join) * Web3 wallet system with support for both non-custodial (Metamask, WalletConnect) and custodial wallets (email, phone number, Google) * NFT minting contract/process for land ownership * AI-based system for generating 3D models * A very intuitive UI (built into the whole experience) for placing/rotating/scaling generated models * Text and voice chat support https://lnkd.in/eqK_7Rji

More exciting AI news from California: two anti-deepfake bills have passed the California Legislature! I've been working on with these two bills as part of the team at the California Initiative for Technology and Democracy since I joined late last year. After testifying in Sacramento *nine* times this legislative session, it is very gratifying to see these bills headed to Governor Newsom's desk for signature! From the release: Headline: Groundbreaking Wins Address Unregulated AI’s Threat to Our Democracy SACRAMENTO – This week, legislation addressing the threat that AI-powered disinformation poses to our elections cleared the last major hurdle in the California state legislature. The bills, sponsored by the California Initiative for Technology and Democracy (CITED), a project of California Common Cause, passed the Senate and Assembly floors and now head to Governor Newsom’s desk to be signed into law by the end of September. “If these bills are signed by the Governor, California will have taken the most assertive steps in the U.S. to date to address the dangers that AI and disinformation pose to our elections,” said Jonathan Mehta Stein, CALIFORNIA COMMON CAUSE’s Executive Director and CITED’s Co-Founder. “We can’t afford to wait for another election or legislative cycle to take action. CITED’s legislation can help lead the way for reforms in other states and nationally in Congress.” The legislative package aims to help regulate the dangers of disinformation turbocharged by AI and social media without stifling innovation or freedom of speech. The two CITED bills that now sit on the Governor’s desk are: > AB 2839, from Assemblymember Gail Pellerin. Keeps misleading deepfakes out of campaign ads and election communications close to Election Day, protecting candidates and election officials while respecting the First Amendment. This law would have addressed Elon Musk’s sharing of a misleading deepfake video of Vice President Kamala Harris, which was viewed 150 million times in one week on X. > AB 2655, from Assemblymember Marc Berman. Combats online disinformation in our elections by requiring social media platforms to label generative AI deepfakes that can deceive voters as digital or fake content, and by prohibiting the posting of the most pernicious of them close to Election Day. A note about AB 3211 and SB 942: Unfortunately, one bill that I did a lot of work on this year, AB 3211, did not receive a floor vote in time for the midnight deadline Saturday. At the same time, there is a silver lining—SB 942, the California AI Transparency Act, has now passed the Senate and Assembly, and is on the way to the Governor for signature. The two bills have notable similarities and there are some ways that SB 942 is better than AB 3211. I now fully support SB 942 and hope to see the Governor sign it into law quickly. At Uniphore, we’ve developed a highly efficient fine-tuning methodology that turns smaller LLMs (and others) into truly formidable tools—and makes LLM-based AI more accessible to enterprises everywhere without sacrificing their needs for data privacy, cost and latency with high accuracy. We benchmarked fine-tuned Llama-3 8B, Llama-3 8B Vanilla and GPT-4 on eight different datasets, covering tasks such as question answering (Q&A), Q&A with structured data/tables, named entity recognition (NER), summarization and agent-based functions that are most relevant for the enterprise AI space. As a result, we achieved a 15% median increase in accuracy as compared to GPT-4 and a 26% median increase in performance as compared to Vanilla Llama-3 8B and an 11x reduction in inference cost. We also developed our in-house framework with optimized code for parameter-efficient instruction fine-tuning of LLMs using the best-in-class available toolsets along with our modifications, which led to an eight-fold reduction in the training time. This allows us and our customers to instruction fine-tune models using our APIs in just a few hours based on their datasets and tasks, ensuring they work effectively for their applications.
