It's easy to do... Being someone who oversees a Precon Dept., it's easy for me to forget that you can't take on every project. As much as I'd love to be involved with every building going up in DFW, that attitude is just not sustainable nor lucrative. For the client or the company. Knowing when to pull the reigns back and hyper focus on your current obligations is a vital component of being successful as a subcontractor. I'll be honest with you, I am an extremely competitive person. Whether it's sports, games or coming in the top 3 on bid tabs, I'm guilty of always wanting to win. (You folks in Precon know what I'm talking about lol) I think for me personally, it's taking a step back and being upfront with your customers that is most important. Being open and honest about what is realistic given your manpower and leadership flexibility. We've all been stretched too thin at some point and when that happens.. you can't dedicate adequate time, resources or manpower to your obligations. It's a constant battle. But I think we've honed it in here at Live. State and Federal construction building projects, please stop wasting my tax dollars by not requiring BIM Coordination or providing any sort of BIM Coordination Specifications on mid to large projects. Yes, this project needs BIM. At over 130k SF, more content then the images show, and congestion like this throughout, there is great risk of delays and claims due to the number of changes that will be required. But without the specifications and clear requirements, not everyone will even include BIM coordination. For those contractors who want so utilize BIM, with no BIM Spec provided, most will receive lack luster results in the end due to the chasing to the bottom, low-cost approach. And unfortunately with these kinds projects, BIM receives a bad representation...I wonder why. I have seen countless project like this and I hear too many of them not going well for the contractors and owners involved. I feel for these contractors and all those from the management to the field. It doesn't have to be this way! If you have the ability to stop this, there are solutions. One option is we provide a BIM Commissioning service to owners, owner representatives, and design build or GC/CM contractors. We were honored to help organize the Kansas City regional pre-event for Construction Inclusion Week, bringing together industry leaders to raise awareness and foster discussions on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the construction industry. This event was a collaborative effort with our peers from Kansas City at Clark Construction, DPR Construction, Turner, Gilbane, Mortenson, SMOOT Construction, JE Dunn Construction, and HOK. Our very own Ralph Powell, Director of Community Outreach and Supplier Diversity, presented at this event on the importance of diversity and inclusion in the construction industry. Here are Ralphs 3 key takeaways: 1. We are all at different stages in our journey toward a more inclusive and equitable construction industry. The diverse curriculum offered during CIW helps meet people and teams where they are, driving manageable and sustainable change. Individual commitment and accountability are key to continuous progress. 2. Despite being competitors, everyone in attendance shared a commitment to fostering a more inclusive industry. It's clear that Construction Inclusion Week plays a vital role in making construction an exceptional field. 3. The benefits of inclusion in construction are undeniable—more innovation, better problem-solving, enhanced teamwork, and stronger community relationships. Dallas is home to a Suffolk Construction project that has more ongoing technology pilots than any other Suffolk site: DFW Airport eCUP. It's a great project, with great people, and unique site conditions that demand excellence. Over the coming months I'm excited to share more of the tech we're using at eCUP, but today I'm excited to share how we're using Hexagon's Building Solutions HexagonCAP and DroneDeploy's Aerial, Ground, and Ground Robotics modules to provide a comprehensive reality capture platform. Lastly, by using Boston Dynamics's Spot, we're able to avoid needing to send our people into a confined space and do so in a completely autonomous fashion at night -- leading to fresh captures in the morning. DataBank's New 480 MW Data Center Campus in South Dallas In a groundbreaking move, DataBank is supercharging the data center landscape with the development of a massive 480 MW campus in Red Oak, TX! This high-tech campus spans 292 acres and is set to house up to 8 cutting-edge, two-story data centers, offering a total of 3.4 million square feet of prime data infrastructure. Powering the Future: The first phase will feature four state-of-the-art buildings alongside a 400 MW substation that can deliver up to 240 MW of critical IT power, with the ability to expand to a total of 480 MW in future phases. This innovative design will support AI-driven applications, hyperscale cloud providers, and enterprises seeking the highest levels of performance and sustainability. Construction is already underway, with a Ready for Service date expected by Q2 2026.
