A question to test your business knowledge: What’s the fundamental difference between Costco and Ford Motor Co.? Answer: Costco respects the communities where it expands. Reading the linked stories, one learns that Costco’s focus on doing right by its customers also extends to residents who may be impacted by the company’s giant warehouse operations. Costco had hoped to build a gigantic 240,000 square feet store in Fresno, CA, to replace a smaller area facility but scaled back the project because of community concerns. That wasn’t Costco’s only concession. The company committed to prohibiting all trucks from using an already busy thoroughfare, including vehicles associated with other vendors. The store’s 32-pump gas station will have longer hours, which will reduce long lines and idling vehicles at peak times. Costco has agreed to cover the repairs of a local road and to pave another with rubber asphalt to reduce traffic noise. Costco also met with the reps from the local school district to make sure they felt comfortable with a new shopping hub and increased traffic so close to their neighboring schools. In response to concerns about adversely impacting property values, Costco said that homes within ¼ mile of its existing Fresno location increased 40% in value after three years of the store’s opening, compared with a 34% increase of homes one mile away. Costco’s new warehouse is expected to create 37 new jobs and generate approximately $13 million in tax revenue, with about $3 million staying in Fresno County. The company supports local charitable initiatives, including donating $9 million to an area children’s charity. Compare Costco’s MO to Ford’s treatment of residents in rural Marshall, MI, where over the strong objections of locals the automaker destroyed fertile farmland and century old trees to build a lithium battery plant in partnership with a China-based company. The environmental destruction was funded by Michigan taxpayers and spearheaded by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who championed $1.8 billion in grants and subsidies based on Ford’s promise to create 2,500 jobs paying lower median wages than other Marshall area companies pay. Ford has since scaled back its employment promise and says it will only create 1,700 jobs. A Ford rep testified at a Marshall council meeting the company wanted to be a “good neighbor.” Ford also says on its website that it is “All In On America,” yet proudly builds its electric Mustang, Maverick pickup, and Bronco Sport in Mexico, where it has also moved critical engineering jobs. As well, Ford has more than 11,000 employees in India. 🚗🚍🚲 Vast may be the perfect word to describe Southern California’s transportation network. More than 116,000 miles of streets, freeways, bus routes, and bike lanes connect the region’s population of 19 million people across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and Imperial counties. And with the population expected to increase by 2 million by 2050, forward-thinking planning around transportation systems and development can help cities prepare for the region’s future mobility needs. This Spring, the Southern California Association of Governments released the Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy known as Connect SoCal 2024. The Plan outlines a vision for the region’s transportation and land use planning to improve accessibility across multi-modal networks, reduce sprawl and congestion, lower emissions, increase transit-oriented development, and address environmental injustices. In coordination with SCAG staff, ESA concurrently prepared the associated Program Environmental Impact Report (PEIR), an effort spanning over four years and involving collaboration with more than 190 jurisdictions. Principal Planner David Crook details how the Plan and PEIR set a vision for Southern California's transportation network, as well as its communities, economy, and environment for the next 25 years. Here’s a roadmap for some nearterm steps to accelerate transportation electrification : → The governor's budget has zeroed out both truck (HVIP) and charging incentives this year.  It’s a tough budget year, but this is going to hurt. →The Low Carbon Fuel Standard provides about $3.5 B annually for low carbon fuels - it’s a great program. However, currently about ~80% goes to biofuels, and credit values are down about 75% from recent averages.  There are some straightforward changes that could be made to have the program better support our in-state electrification goals: https://lnkd.in/gnH2A398 https://lnkd.in/gj2XQgy7 → The California Public Utilities Commission is contemplating pulling back $1B in planned and promised investments to support Transportation Electrification. https://lnkd.in/gcwn-zMY This would increase charging costs for customers, slowing the transition. For years, California transit executive Carl Sedoryk searched for a way to make fare collection easier on the roughly 130 buses that transported passengers in Monterey, Salinas and surrounding areas just south of the Bay Area. Sedoryk, the general manager and CEO of Monterey-Salinas Transit, wanted to remove drivers from the process of collecting fares as much as possible. And that meant finding a way to replace cash transactions. Monterey-Salinas became the first transit agency to test the solution for the California Integrated Travel Project, a program established under the California Department of Transportation, or Caltrans, to make travel planning and payments simpler and more cost-effective. The project is now working with 60 transit agencies around the country to roll out similar efforts—even though it is run by a California state agency. The program is helping agencies as far away as Connecticut, Oklahoma and South Carolina to use contactless payments on their transit vehicles. In all seriousness, while I am happy to hear this for my healthcare employee friends and colleagues, this puts a tremendous burden on medical employers and should be just another justification as to why certain outsourcing should be considered. "By June 2026, most salaried health care employees must be making $78,000 annually to be exempt from the new minimum wage and overtime pay requirements." Electrifying these trucks would improve local health and reduce climate impacts. However, providing sufficient charging infrastructure in the right locations is challenging. That’s why RMI analyzed drayage trucking data in Los Angeles County: to provide stakeholders with a clear understanding of where trucks typically go before and after passing through the Port of LA. The biggest takeaway? Creating well-located charging locations will result in faster deployment and lower grid costs, while accelerating truck, transit, school bus, and car electrification. SVLG CEO Ahmad Thomas highlighted the growing challenge for businesses in California due to rising operational costs. “The challenge we have is the cost of doing business and operating in California continues to increase. How do we mitigate that?” he asked. Ahmad Thomas emphasized that California’s competitive edge is being chipped away by global competition. Heads up that Hawaii is changing its GET policy. If you've got a production in Hawaii and are working with a payroll service company processing payroll as the EOR on behalf of the production company, this change will have a direct impact. Though if you are with GreenSlate as your payroll provider, you do have options.   Clients who utilize GreenSlate’s Agency payroll processing model (where the Production Company remains the EOR) will NOT be subject to this change and will continue to pay only the 4.5% GET on GreenSlate’s handling fees.
