A recent Wall Street Journal article by Isabella Simonetti (gifted link below) reveals that TV networks are embracing their aging viewership and challenging the notion that younger demographics are the most valuable targets for advertisers. With the median age of viewers now in their 50s and 60s (MTV viewers average 51 years old!) for many networks, executives argue that reaching consumers based on their purchasing habits, rather than age, is the key to effective advertising. Older viewers often have more disposable income, are less sensitive to price increases, and are still making brand decisions. By focusing on the mass-market reach of TV and targeting people likely to buy a product, regardless of age, media buyers are adapting to the changing landscape of television viewership. As media and entertainment professionals, it's crucial to recognize the importance of this demographic shift and adapt our approaches accordingly. A recent release by #Shopsense caught my eye: they're leveraging AI to transform TV content into personalized, instant shopping experiences. This reduces the friction we typically experience with product discovery and purchase post TV ad-exposure. The Second Screen: A New Frontier for Retail Media?   This got me thinking about the convergence of TV and mobile commerce, and I was surprised to learn that 85% of Gen Z embrace second-screen viewing. AdExchanger: Why is everyone so obsessed with sell-side curation all of a sudden? "John Gentry: One big reason is because of how addressability and identity are changing. The closer you are to the publisher, the easier it is to match your data, because there are fewer hops. You don’t need to go from the publisher to the SSP to the DSP to the DMP to try and resolve who a user might be. In short, there’s better fidelity. The other thing we hear from buyers is the fact that curation can be DSP-agnostic. Buyers can take the same deal ID they use across our supply and use it with multiple different DSPs. A lot of buyers work with more than one DSP, so they like the ability to transport that deal ID across the landscape." This. Right. Here.

Wrote a short post on history repeating itself with the explosion of growth in Retail Media. With marketing dollars continuing to shift to performance focused spend, Retail Media sits at an intersection that promises tremendous growth whichever turn you take. Pent up demand for high ROI channels of marketing, privacy friendly advertising, and high ROI for all participating parties. Opportunities abound. And another takeaway - Amazon does it again by showing the world that not only can it redefine how humans shop and lead the world on cloud infrastructure - but it can rebuild a better version of the commercial lifeblood of the internet by inventing ads that work. Amazon Ads was the first scaled version of Retail Media and it's now crossed $50B in revenue over the past 12 months. Incredible. Let me know your thoughts. #commerceisthefuture #retailmedia
