🚀Firefly Aerospace Joins U.S. Defense's Strategic Space Program with SDA HALO Contract Firefly Aerospace has been selected as a trusted vendor for the U.S. Department of Defense's Space Development Agency (SDA) HALO (Hybrid Acquisition for Proliferated LEO) program. This exciting new partnership allows Firefly to support end-to-end demonstration missions for SDA’s rapidly expanding military satellite network in low-Earth orbit, utilizing its advanced Elytra orbital vehicles. Production for the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) constellation is in full swing, and Northrop Grumman is one of the primary contractors producing satellites for what will soon be a global constellation of missile defense and data transport satellites. Collins Aerospace, an RTX (NYSE: RTX) business, successfully demonstrated mobile, distributed command and control during a series of fires, networking and mission command experiments at INDOPACOM’s Valiant Shield exercise. Collins partnered with the U.S. Army’s 1st Multi-Domain Task Force to conduct the experiments—inside a ground vehicle—to rapidly reconfigure and deploy capabilities based on evolving mission needs. The mission command ‘on-the-move’ concept uses commercial and military communications networks to provide access to multiple intelligence sources. To ‘make sense’ of the data from various sources, the company used an AI/ML battle management software. This created fused situational awareness that can be shared with bilateral and joint force partners. Valiant Shield is a biennial field training that builds real-world proficiency in sustaining U.S. forces through detecting, locating, tracking, and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land, and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas. The exercise is one of the largest United States military war games held in the Pacific Ocean. Aircraft from Valiant Shield deployed on missions ranging across the Pacific all the way to Alaska. This RFI focuses on C-sUAS capabilities operating in contested electromagnetic environments. The JCO seeks advanced systems for two critical areas: 1. Group 3 short range defeat: Solutions for detecting, tracking, identifying, and defeating Group 3 UAS within 2km, utilizing small arms munitions and kinetic interceptors. 2. Groups 1 and 2 dismounted DTID: Handheld and wearable systems for dismounted forces to handle Group 1-2 UAS. During a three-week effort, Future Vertical Cross Functional Team (FVLCFT) partnered with U.S. Army DEVCOM C5ISR Center, U.S. Army DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center and the U.S. Army Redstone Test Center (RTC) at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida to advance Launched Effects (LE) behaviors and characteristics for the #warfighter. FVL completed Phase 3 of the advanced networking waveform characterization during the experimentation. The team collected data on multiple radios and waveforms during multi-ship flights at extended operational ranges against both contested and uncontested environments. Data gathered will be used to inform future aviation modernization; and to validate, modeling and simulation efforts. The intent was to learn about the trade space of long-range air to air; and air to ground communications. The emphasis is increased range and endurance for future LEs combined with a low probability of detection, and a low probability of jamming from perceived threats. LE surrogates successfully demonstrated teaming behaviors, characteristics, and attributes against both contested and uncontested conditions as they negotiated the test area. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is seeking industry feedback for a “Swarm Carrier” uncrewed aircraft system capable of launching from a C-130 and deploying drones of it own, according to a new notice published Wednesday. AFSOC eventually plans to seek input on drones in sizes between Group 2 and Group 3, Pentagon parlance for small- to mid-size UAS. One drone would be a Group 2 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) drone, which could be internally carried and launched by the Group 3 “Swarm Carrier.” The Swarm Carrier itself should be capable of launching as a palletized effect from a C-130. And a separate Group 3 drone would be “signature managed” — denoting stealth qualities that could hide it from detection — and deployed from a Group 5 UAS, the largest drone class, to act as a command node for a swarm and relay data back from a contested or denied environment.

Should there be an Undersecretary of Defense for the Defense Industrial Base? Someone looking beyond individual contracts and building capacity domestically and with partners? Defense reforms are finally taking root and paying off. The question is whether larger primes and OEMs can adapt to provide defense articles at scale.
