Very excited to begin Organizational Behaviour tonight with Sprott School of Business at Carleton University!! When I took the Human Resources Management Certificate with Sprott, Organizational Behaviour was my first course with Alison Cunningham (massive shout out to Alison who was an excellent instructor who I learned a lot from!). I hadn't attended university courses for over 8 years and I was terrified. Could I get good grades AND work full time? What if I wasn't interested in Human Resources after a couple classes? What if I didn't succeed? Back then, we did the program in person at Carleton University and I remember my husband driving me to class and parking the car. I told him he didn't have to come in with me, but he turned to me and said he wanted to get a photo. That when I was done the program, I would want to remember this day. The day I went back to university as an adult, following my passion and hoping to expand my career. So in the snow, I walked up to the sign for Canal Building and let my husband take a goofy photo of me on my first day back at classes. Well, he was right. I do remember that day and I remember leaving class excited over the new friends I met. I remember an amazing instructor who made me believe in education again. And most of all I remember being excited for my future with Sprott. Students, this program is a lot of hard work but you're taking the time to invest in yourself and that's something to celebrate! Human Resources is an exciting career path with a lot of different avenues and this is one step in the right direction. Liked the words about the type of learning going on here! In our changing days after the pandemic, in an election year and with Artificial Intelligence coming into our world like an out of control locomotive train we don’t need traditional rote professional development, personal development, training , up skilling etc. that leaves little lasting value after the first 72 hours. An instruction principle is that if no learning as not occurred then no training or development has occurred. Just like with a k12 student if no learning happens then actually the child is just a person spending time in a building 180 days out of the year. The child only becomes a “student” by definition when he or she is learning. A participation trophy is not the goal in learning. The picture of the student sleeping in class is because he doesnt have a ROTC instructor yet this year and its May! Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the LDP Summit to be immersed in learning about early career development. I heard an analogy that really resonated with me and thought I would share my take on it. Archery vs Curling In archery, you simply point, shoot and hope you hit the target. Once the arrow leaves your hand, there is nothing else you can do to influence where it lands. In curling, one team member releases the stone and then the team supports the path by making adjustments along the way. As I relate this to company L&D strategies, do we have a point and shoot strategy where we welcome our employees in and hope that whatever we did gets them to hit the target? Or are we keeping a watchful eye and making adjustments and investments along the way? I know that I would prefer to be part of a curling environment. #earlycareerdevelopment #coaching

Education and training has been led for decades in most areas by the “band wagon” leadership approach. Wherever someone was getting funding, a plan was the popular one or someone was having success educators would jump on the bandwagon wagon of supporting it and possibly even use it whether it was appropriate for their situation or not. Learning and Navigating through Life: Recently, someone asked me to recall a memory from my school days that I’ll never forget, and here’s what I shared: In school, I was an average student until Class 10: decent marks, no extracurricular activities, and a bit lazy. Everything changed when I became the class monitor in Class 11. This responsibility was my first taste of leadership, and it sparked a transformation. I began engaging in activities and focused more on my studies, which marked the beginning of my personal growth. As Class 12 started, fear set in. The stakes were high, with Class 12 being crucial for my future. Everyone advised me to aim for "decent" marks to secure a good college. However, a pivotal 10-minute conversation with my grandfather became my true motivation. I recall him saying "Beta, I won’t push you into any specific career direction. My only wish is for you to understand what's right and wrong, and to pursue your own goal, even if it requires dedicating all your time to hard work.” When my Class 12 board results were out, I had not only achieved more than "decent" marks but also surpassed everyone's expectations, bringing happy tears to my mother’s eyes. The lesson here? I didn’t give up. I committed to hard work and consistent study habits. Sacrificing my leisure time paid off. My dedication and structured approach were reflected in my outstanding results.
