metronom visits DB InfraGO
On August 8th, our latest group of aspiring train drivers visited the DB InfraGO operations center in Hanover. Upon completing their training, these trainees will operate the electric train "enno", one of the most modern and environmentally friendly trains, on the route between Hanover, Wolfsburg, and Hildesheim.
The agenda for the day included gaining an understanding of DB InfraGo's work, which encompasses both routine daily operations and emergency situations, as well as the roles and responsibilities of the employees within the operations center. We explored the world of operations dispatchers, train dispatchers, emergency managers, network coordinators, track workers, signal technicians, and many others.
The behind-the-scenes insights and the opportunity to exchange experiences through numerous personal conversations on-site were particularly valuable.
Why is such a training day important for aspiring train drivers?
Firstly, it is clear that a training program focused solely on the basics will result in only a limited level of service after the training is completed.
This outcome is not in the best interest of our passengers, our company, society at large, and certainly not the trainees themselves.
The role of a train driver extends beyond the driver's cab, the vehicle, signal systems, and route knowledge; it also involves close collaboration with other parties involved in railway operations. It is a special experience to meet the people with whom you will likely only interact via the service phone later on.
Perhaps the most important takeaway from this event is the increased awareness of proactive communication.
As a train driver, it is crucial to communicate with the operations center early and frequently when in doubt.
This shift in perspective regarding roles and responsibilities generally opens up additional options for better resolving situations together—for a safe, reliable, and customer-friendly railway operation.
Many thanks to Maximilian Münch and Michael Gehnke and their colleagues in Hanover for their informative presentation and for sharing their valuable experiences.
