Next one on my reading list, one of the most important things in software engineering is balanced decisions. Too often the right decision or pattern isn't the best for a particular case, decoupling isn't always the right path, modular things and balanced decisions are often the best approach as not all problems need to be solved at same time.

In the world of Software Engineering, it's time we move beyond seeing things in black and white. No single practice, pattern, or tool is a 'one-size-fits-all.' What's labeled as excellent or awful can actually vary widely depending on the situation. It's crucial for our field to advance by recognizing that we have a diverse toolbox at our disposal. The key? Understanding which tool fits best in your unique context.

Dear software engineer, the problem you're tasked with solving is most likely already solved. We software engineers love building things, and so we're tempted to jump into building a brand new solution for every problem coming our way. This greatly limits what we can achieve. If you reuse existing solutions instead, you can really push the boundaries of what is possible with all the time you've saved! Always start by researching what is already available before starting to build a solution!

Transitioning from IC to EM is incredibly difficult for many software engineers. I'm no exception to this - becoming an engineering manager after being an individual contributor was hard. This is especially true for EMs that still are expected to be delivering code. Finding the right balance is hard. You're used to your individual impact being what showcases your abilities. As per my own experience, as you grow in your software engineering career, the value that a good document (you create/draft) brings to all stakeholders is very high. Thereafter, I started valuing this work more than “coding”.
