Philosophy

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Elaine Kung has a passion for helping others. At Future Bright Dermatology, she not only treats common skin concerns, but also helps others age gracefully with her four tenants of rejuvenation. “Our skin starts to lose collagen after age 18 at a rate of 1 percent per year. Aging is continuous and precipitous in women after menopause,” she explains. “My four pillars of anti-aging are relaxing muscles with neurotoxins, revolumizing with fillers, resurfacing with lasers and energy-based treatments, and repositioning tissue with threads or nonsurgical means.” Dr. Kung serves a multicultural population and is adept at treating patients with diverse skin tones and concerns. “I developed an expertise in performing aesthetic procedures on patients with darker skin tones, and I am an invited expert speaker for laser device companies because of my extensive experience with the Asian American Pacific Islander community,” she says.

About My Practice

How do you manage patient expectations?

I discuss treatment options in a practical and realistic manner. I don’t sugar coat or make my patients anxious. I am a level-headed, even-keeled person so patients know that they are in good hands.

What are your most requested procedures?

After neurotoxins for wrinkles, patients frequently request laser and energy-based procedures the most. We have a full suite of devices—including fractionated CO2, Intense Pulse Light, the Picosecond laser and radio-frequency microneedling—that can help patients with skin tone, discoloration, redness, pore size, wrinkles, skin laxity, scars, etc.  I often use multiple devices during a treatment session because most people don’t have a singular aesthetic concern. This is why combination therapies like SmoothGlo and TriLift have become so popular in my practice in the last year.

How do you show patients you care post-treatment?

We message our patients after procedures and we offer check-up appointments after procedures.

About Me

Which three words best describe your personality?

Caring, conscientious and classy

If you could invent anything related to your field, what would it be?

An ouchless aesthetic procedure!

If you had more time in the day, what would you do?

I would do more yoga because it really helps me with relaxation, flexibility, alignment and musculoskeletal pain.

A Minute With

  1. What are you the most proud of about your practice?

I am most proud of self-funding my clinic Future Bright Dermatology in 2009 with all my savings from my first job as an assistant professor of dermatology at Loyola University Medical Center.  I started my business from scratch without seed money from investors nor bank loans.  I initially worked seven days a week and 14 hour days seeing patients and doing much of the administrative work by myself.

  2. Describe your doctor/patient relationship dynamic.

Most of my patients would describe our interactions as professional, informative and helpful. Many say I am thoughtful and kind. In general, I have a good rapport with my patients, which is why they refer their friends and family to me.

  3. What is the one thing your practice offers that is really unique?

Since my clinic serves a multicultural population, I have experience in treating skin of color patients and their concerns. I developed an expertise in performing aesthetic procedures on patients with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types IV to V). I am an invited speaker for laser and energy-based device companies because of my extensive experience with the AAPI community. I have patients of Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Burmese, Malaysian and Filipino descent who visit from as far north as Vermont, as far south as Florida and as far west as California.

  4. Is there one procedure, operation or patient that changed your career?

The SmoothGlo protocol combines the synergistic energies of The Stellar IPL with The Legend Pro radio-frequency microneedling devices to target skin discoloration, laxity and volume loss. My experience with the SmoothGlo treatment on people with medium skin tones has catapulted me to becoming an international speaker.  I have introduced the SmoothGlo protocol to aesthetic providers in Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan.

FAQs

  1. What is one skin-care tip everyone should follow?
    What our experts say:

Keep it simple. Overcomplicated routines are not only costly, but also time-consuming. Don’t get lost in too many steps or products.

  2. Which medical myth do you hear the most?
    What our experts say:

That drinking water helps dry skin. Although water is important for overall health, drinking too much can cause hyponatremia, which is potentially life threatening. There is little research that supports drinking more water will help skin hydration or appearance.
