Editorial Policies
We’ve been going a long time. A really long time. In fact, we weren’t always called VideoGamer.com – but ProG. It all began when university friends Adam McCann and Tom Orry decided to kick off the site in November 2004. Fast forward a few brilliant years, and the site was acquired by Manchester-based publisher By Gamers For Gamers in 2022.
The team may have changed, but what VideoGamer.com stands for hasn’t. We don’t use AI and we’re not a massive team. We strive to create interesting, unique gaming news and features, as well as best-in-class guides by our resident expert Tom Bardwell. Everything we do goes through a strict editorial process to ensure the highest possible standards are met. As a small team, we won’t get it right all the time, but we do everything we can and always welcome feedback from our readers.
VideoGamer.com is built on the following pillars:
- Reliability and trust: Whether it’s a news story about a player count or an interview with an industry expert, everything we do focuses on telling the most compelling story authentically. Unless otherwise clearly marked as ‘sponsored’, the content we produce is never influenced by advertising or commercial partnerships.
- Original content: We always strive to tell ‘Only on VideoGamer’ stories – and are constantly reaching out to the industry’s many amazingly-talented creators and fans to get their views and tell their stories..
- Best in class reviews: VideoGamer has a long legacy of brilliant reviews and we want to honor and build on that. We can’t review every game, as we are a small team, but we’ll always try to do the largest ones and as many indies as we can. You can find out how we test and review games here.
- Images: We always strive to capture and create our own images – but should we use ones that were created either by the community or as part of a pre-made publisher pack, we will explicity say so and credit any original source clearly.
- Spoilers: Any information about a game that could spoil the experience for someone looking forward to playing will be clearly marked as such. If you see the ‘spoiler’ note – please proceed with caution.
- Reviews: As stated in our review policy, we do not accept money for reviews. Sometimes a publisher will give us a code or copy of the game to review. If this is the case, it will be marked as such at that bottom of the review. This helps us, as it allows us to get the review out on time, usually ahead of the release.
- Useful content: With such a huge amount of content on VideoGamer.com, the team is constantly trying to improve and keep on top of legacy articles. This is an ongoing, long process – but one we as a team do to keep the site as healthy as possible.
We sometimes post links to online retailers (like Amazon) on VideoGamer.com and the site’s social media channels such as Twitter. We receive a small commission from any purchases made via these links. These links do not influence editorial decisions or review scores in any way. Before we get into the boring stuff below, we want to thank both the original team and you for supporting VideoGamer.com for so long.
