TAMPA, Fla. - The USL announced today the 11 players selected to the 2024 Team of the Year. These players were selected by a vote of member clubs at the end of the regular season, as well as by USL league officials.
Tomasz Wroblewski - Little Rock Rangers
Wroblewski's list of accolades from the 2024 season is getting longer by the day. He's the Golden Glove winner, Mid-South Divisional Player of the Year, and now the goalkeeper on the Team of the Year.
The league's best defense was anchored by the Pole's agile feet, strong hands and great positioning in between the sticks. Whatever he lacks in a traditional goalkeeper's height, he makes up for in quickness, smarts and box presence.
Charlie Harper - Asheville City SC
The anchor at the back for the Blues during their undefeated regular season, Harper is everything you want in a central defender. Quick, strong, decisive, and willing to do the dirty work, Harper provided nearly unparalleled security along the back line.
Josh Jones - Ocean City Nor'Easters
Of course, the 2024 Defender of the Year was going to find his way onto the Team of the Year. Jones was nothing short of dominant for the Nor'Easters, providing towering headers for goals and cleaning up everything at the back.
If there was a dangerous situation for the Nor'Easters, it was almost always Jones cleaning it up. Always in control, always keeping the game in front of him, Jones oozed class and strength as he swatted away chances like other people would a fly around their food.
Christian Engmann - Ballard FC
Injury ended the last season early for Engmann, who was also one of the best defenders in 2023. In 2024, it was business as usual - his blend of touch, physical ability and intelligence provided a lot of help to a Ballard FC side that had its ups and downs under a new coach in 2024.
Engmann, however, kept on as one of the best central defenders in the country, expanding his passing range and continuing to dominate in the air for the Bridges.
Taig Healy - Seacoast United Phantoms
The Hagi of South Hampton was everything the Phantoms wanted him to be and more. The Phantoms academy graduate was an unbelievable playmaker all season, contributing to nearly 30 goals ahead of playoffs.
His mix of tight dribbling, perfectly weighted passes, and venomous shot made Healy a force of nature en route to the club's first league title.
William Wiersdorf - Almaden FC
Expansion club? Wiersdorf and Almaden FC aren't worried about that label.
Repeatedly tabbed as one of the best destroyers League Two has to offer in midfield, Wiersdorf made it incredibly difficult for opponents to play through Almaden. His gravitational touch, spatial awareness and penchant for crashing the box served him well as he scored eight goals en route to a divisional title in the club's first season.
Cooper Flax - Manhattan SC
This isn't the first time Flax has turned in a delightful season in the Metropolitan Division, and it seems that he got even better over the last year. Seven goals in seven games from midfield were enough to get Flax on this list as he continued his imperious habit of being the best player on the pitch every time he laced up his boots.
Marc Torrellas - Des Moines Menace
Last season's Player of the Year nominee got another year, this time with the Menace, to make up for the time lost to injury. He made the most of it, as he scored five goals and played all 12 games, becoming a key piece of the club's Heartland-winning season.
His clutch free kick against Peoria City in the regular season ended up being the difference in the race, securing a point for his side instead of losing all three. His ability on the ball is hard to find a parallel for in the league, and was one of the Menace's great strengths in 2024.
Luke Persenico - Peoria City
One of the stories of the season, Persenico's rise to national notoriety from NAIA's Clarke University was only just missing the storybook ending.
Even still, his volume of goals across the season was absolutely brilliant, a terror no matter what defense he came up against. He carried that form throughout the season and into playoffs, scoring seven goals in four matches before even reaching the Final. No matter what happens now, many more people know the name Luke Persenico.
Alec Hughes - Western Mass Pioneers
The Golden Boot winner and Player of the Year, Alec Hughes was the main man in the Northeast Division. The target striker was the beneficiary of every Pioneers attack, and for good reason. His ability to finish from all angles, run in behind, spin defenders, basically everything you'd want a striker to do, is incredibly good.
Sebastian Tregarthen - Asheville City SC
Asheville City SC is the only club to have two players on the Team of the Year, and for good reason. Their regular season dominance on both ends of the pitch was spectacular, and Tregarthen was a major piece of that.
Tregarthen led the way in the regular season with seven goals, and did the hard work to maintain the Blues' advantage in attacking phases. One of the sharpest and most intense attackers in the country to try and contain, and most times, opponents were unsuccessful.
