Hong Kong 97 is a 1995 licensed MMORPG released on the SNES. The game was designed by the Japanese cousin of Chuck Norris, Yoshihisa "Kowloon" Kurosawa. According to Kurosawa, the game took several years to develop. The game is best known as "that one game that is better than the crap people call modern games". Many fans praise the good graphics, which no other game has surpassed.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

The tutorial level takes place in Hong Kong in the year 1997. The tutorial teaches players the basic controls, and sets them on the first quest to kill 1.2 billion communists while playing as the default character named Chin, a relative of Bruce Lee. Once the tutorial is complete, the player will select one of six servers, and they will be able to customize their avatar and interact with other players. The players can then follow the main quest, in which the player has to stop the scientists in China from transforming the deceased Deng Xiaoping into the ultimate weapon or follow over 100,000 sub-quests in the game. Players may also play many mini-games with each other, including Chess, Solitaire, Monopoly, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Set in the year 1997, Deng Xiaoping dies of lung cancer. The government of China then starts a secret project to resurrect him into an ultimate weapon so they can take over the world with communism. The player then must stop the Chinese government. However, China is inaccessible until the player defeats the eight robot masters, beats a level 9,001 AI at Chess, saves animals from an evil scientist, saves a princess, finds some spheres, and blows up the moon. Once these criteria are met China will be accessible. However, by the time the player is ready, it is too late, as Deng Xiaoping has already been transformed into the ultimate weapon. Deng Xiaoping then betrays his creators and kills 99.99% of the planet's population. The player then defeats Deng Xiaoping and saves the world.

However, the player will get the bad ending unless they have completed every side quest in the game. Once every side quest has been completed, the player can then battle Deng Xiaoping again. After Deng Xiaoping is defeated, Mao Zedong shows up as the true final boss. Mao has 100 phases, each one lasting for about 2 hours, and all of his attacks one-shot the player even at max health and max armor. Nobody has ever beaten Mao, so nobody knows the true ending to the game.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Hong Kong 97 has been praised by many fans who claim it is the best game ever released. The graphics look better than reality, and the controls are perfect. No modern video game has ever been close to being as good as Hong Kong 97. Not a single glitch has ever been found in the game, making it the most stable game in history.

Speedrunning and Records[edit | edit source]

The fastest time anyone has ever completed the main quest was 353 hours, 31 minutes, and 12 seconds. Completing all the side quests took Jackie Chan 1,351 hours, 4 minutes, and 54 seconds. The fastest TAS records for the main quest and the side quests were 352 hours, 59 minutes, and 23 seconds and 1,337 hours, 6 minutes, and 9 seconds respectively. Only 6 people have made it to Mao Zedong: Jesus, Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Queen Elizabeth II, and TheLegend27. The Mao Zedong battle takes about 200 hours to complete all 100 phases. Only Chuck Norris has made it to phase 100, which he can't even beat with his omnipotence.
