The name of the crime gang in the film is Maddick, not Merrick. The name of the gang is clearly shown in at least two newspaper headlines near the start of the movie. It is true that many British accents make the names "Merrick" and "Maddick" sound almost identical; nonetheless, the name of the crime syndicate is Maddick.
