From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NOTE: This account was previously used, but is no longer needed as I am not currently a volunteer at the LVA. I may return as a volunteer so it's not impossible that this account could come out of retirement, but until then I'm marking it as abandoned. If you have any questions, please post to my talk page at ReaderofthePack.

This is an alternate account being used by User:Tokyogirl79 for any edits that I will make in relation to the Library of Virginia, where I work as an unpaid volunteer. My edits for this account will primarily center around trying to add sources to various articles that have to do with materials currently in the possession of the Library of Virginia. These will include sources such as primary sources (documents, photographs, and other materials that have been deemed accurate and genuine) and potentially information from the Dictionary of Virginia Biography to help verify information in various articles. I will also insert links to database entries at The Dictionary of Virginia Biography and/or Encyclopedia Virginia when appropriate, usually at the bottom of the article in the external links section but also potentially within an article if there is a situation where a topic (person, place, event, etc) is of important historical significance to the topic but may not warrant an article of their own. (This is done with the intention of giving readers a link to discover more about the person without having to create a separate entry or give the person WP:UNDUE weight in the article.) When time and sourcing permits, I will try to create articles for topics that pass WP:GNG.

It should be assumed that any edits made under this account will be related to the LVA, either in my general edits or in article creation. This is because most of the topics I find are ones that I discover through one of the links below. Occasionally I will find some topics via books held by the LVA (since who works at a library without checking out a few books?), but in order to keep these separate from this account I'll almost always create those under my main account so people do not have to guess which edits are directly LVA related and which are indirect. I will almost never add LVA sources to an article under my main account. (I did open the account User:Tokyogirl79LVA2 in error, but that one will not be used and only redirects to this account.)

I will respond to queries made by this account on either this account's talk page or on my main account, but please do not post on here about anything that does not relate to the Library of Virginia edits on this page!

About the websites I will be adding

[edit]

Since I will be inserting these websites into pages as either a source or a link, I would like to explain these websites somewhat. All material in the DVB and EV have been written and/or edited by a vetted historian/scholar for accuracy, grammar, and tone (IE, it's at academic and peer-review level so it would be considered a reliable source per WP:RS), and both websites were created with the intent for the topics to be used as an educational resource. (A list of articles that I have added links to can be seen here and I will try to keep this up to date, but it should be assumed that any edits I make under this account will be at least somewhat related to the LVA.)

The Dictionary of Virginia Biography (DVB) is a classified index operated and maintained by the Library of Virginia that covers people that are deemed of historical importance for the state of Virginia and pass the notability criteria set forth by the index. Several volumes have been published thus far and in the last few years the LVA made the choice to move the project online as opposed to releasing print versions only. A list of contributors can be found here and the criteria for inclusion (which also gives a brief overview about the contributors' qualifications) can be seen here.

The Encyclopedia Virginia (EV) is an encyclopedia/website run by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities in conjunction with the Library of Virginia. Like the DVB, this website covers various Virginia-related topics considered to be of great historical importance. The editorial staff for the EV can be seen on this page. This website does have encyclopedia articles, but the articles also include multimedia such as images, audio, and other things that expand on the topic. I will include these in the external links section primarily for this reason, as these are usually things that Wikipedia may not have on its website.

Occasionally I will be linking to various articles posted by the LVA, predominantly biographies (long or short) that are hosted on the official website. These biographies, much like the ones in the DVB and EV, have been written and/or edited by an authoritative source on the topic. Some of the links pertain to honors given by the LVA that are given on a yearly basis to a limited number of Virginians whose contributions to society (and history) are considered above and beyond the norm.
