The book has several differences with the film that contradict the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Claire is the assistant that calls Stephen Strange when he has his car accident instead of Billy. In addition, Karl Mordo's discussion of relics owned by the Masters of the Mystic Arts specifically names the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak and the Brazier of Bom'Galiath, which were seen in the film, but not named, and lists the Pincers of Power and the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, which are not mentioned in the film. Moreover, the book includes a different version of the scene where Strange is shown the Multiverse by the Ancient One and no one besides Strange is shown to be protecting the New York Sanctum. Therefore, the book is considered to hold a non-canon status in the franchise.
