Helstrom is an American web television series based on the Marvel Comics antiheroes Daimon and Satana Hellstrom. It is the twelfth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series was produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios, and originally released on Hulu.

The first and only season was released on October 16, 2020 on Hulu.

On December 14, 2020, the series was canceled by Hulu.[1]

As the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, Helstrom follows Daimon and Ana Helstrom, and their complicated dynamic, as they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.

In May 2019, it was reported that Marvel Television was producing a TV series featuring Daimon and Ana Helstrom on Hulu. Paul Zbyszewski would serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Jeph Loeb would also be executive producer.[2]

In August 2019, Loeb stated that Helstrom, Ghost Rider, and other unannounced Hulu series would be labelled under the banner Adventure into Fear.[3]

In September 2019, it was reported that the series would be filming under the working title Omens, and that production would start on October 7, 2019. Filming was expected to last until February 28, 2020.[4]

On October 8, 2019, the series' main cast was announced.[5]

On December 11, 2019, it was reported that, due to Marvel Television being folded into Marvel Studios, the latter studio would oversee subsequent development on Helstrom.[6]

On March 15, 2020, it was reported that the production of the first season of Helstrom had wrapped.[7]

On June 22, 2020, it was reported that the series would be released around Halloween 2020.[8]

On December 14, 2020, the series was canceled by Hulu.[1]

In 2019, it was reported that Helstrom as well as the rest of the planned Adventure into Fear TV series were going to be set in the same universe as the other Marvel Television series but, unlike the Disney+ series, they would not have crossovers with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[9] At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Jeph Loeb said that Helstrom and the cancelled Ghost Rider TV series would connect with each other, and also said that Gabriel Luna's Robbie Reyes' series would address "what happened in the past since he would be playing the same iteration of Reyes that was introduced in the MCU series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..[10] In December 2019, it was announced that Marvel Television would be absorbed by Marvel Studios, and every other Marvel TV show would not be moving forward. As Helstrom had already begun filming, Marvel Studios began to oversee the show as it wrapped production.[11]

The official account for the series on Twitter, trades and other websites reported that show was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] with Collider stating that "the series is somewhat canonically inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe".[24] Alain Uy also acknowledged that the show was part of the MCU.[25][26] Meanwhile, Elizabeth Marvel said that the show would be part of the established Marvel franchise and that it would bring a new section of it, comparing it to Marvel's Daredevil.[27][28] On the other hand, a few days before the release, showrunner Paul Zbyszewski said that the show was "siloed off [from the Marvel Cinematic Universe]. Part of it is [because] it’s a darker-themed show than the other Marvel shows on other platforms." With Entertainment Weekly noting that "the absence of the Marvel logo is on purpose, as it helps to differentiate itself from every other show in the [Marvel Cinematic] universe carries".[29] In a separate interview, Zbyszewski answered to the question if the show was part of the MCU saying: "We're not tied to the MCU. We are our own separate thing. There are Easter eggs [to the MCU] in the show for sure, but they’re more towards that Helstrom universe, and that Ghost Rider universe."[30]

When the show released, there were plenty of easter-eggs to MCU-exclusive items seen in other MCU productions such as O'Harren's Scotch Whisky, San Francisco Tribune, New Orleans Gazette, and The Dallas Record. The easter-eggs seen in the Marvel Television series were designed specifically so the shows could tie-in with each other without having explicit crossovers.[31] In spite of this, in a later interview, Paul Zbyszewski said that the show "was not part of the MCU. We are our own thing. There was a freeing sort of feeling about it because canon can be heavy. It is a weight on your shoulders. And to have just this little pocket of the universe, because of what it is [
] it needed to be its own thing."[32] This sentiment was later echoed by Sydney Lemmon who said that the show was not "actually" part of the MCU saying the show needed to take a life on its own, which was supported by Tom Austen.[33]

Therefore, as there are contradictory statements on the canon of the series, per our canon policy, Helstrom is considered to hold a dubious canon status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
