Shangri-La was a base located in China's Hunan Province, officially abandoned after an incident in 1968.
As known among S.H.I.E.L.D. inner circles, it unofficially continued to be active well into the 1980s with the tacit cooperation of the People's Republic of China.[1]

- Shangri-La is a Tibetan utopia in James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon (1933). As a noun, it is a place regarded as an earthly paradise, especially when involving a retreat from the pressures of modern civilization. It originates from Shangri, an invented name, and Tibetan la, which means "mountain pass."
- Zhongdian in China's southwestern Yunnan Province—has officially gone by the name Shangri-La County since 2001.
