Whaler Joe was once Popeye's guardian, having raised the orphan since he was 4 years of age, and he helped to start him off on the path of the sailor.
Character history[]
Creation and development in Thimble Theatre[]
Whaler Joe was created by E. C. Segar in March 1931 for a King Features Syndicate series of promotional spots called Popeye's Life Story, which contained details about Popeye's life growing up and all his personal traits. Whaler Joe himself was introduced as the orphan Popeye's guardian.
Due to the obscurity and rarity of Popeye's Life Story, Whaler Joe is not very well known by the populace, with his appearances and mentions in other media being rare.
Whaler Joe's physical appearance was first shown in Popeye's Cartoon Club in 2020, on a strip written and drawn by Randy Milholland. An aged Joe later appeared in Olive & Popeye, along with his daughter Petunia.
