Good evening Aristeas,

It’s about this photo

It’s about this photo

Sorry to bother you, but I don't know who else to contact. My photo File:Seed setting of Verbena hastata, 17-08-2024. (d.j.b).jpg has disappeared from the page Commons:Featured picture candidates but is not on the page Commons:Featured images. Perhaps you can help me with that. Thank you in advance for your advice. Kind regards, Dominicus Bergsma.--Famberhorst (talk) 15:40, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello Dominicus/Famberhorst, I will look into it. Best, – Aristeas (talk) 07:08, 17 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Dominicus/Famberhorst, I guess it’s just the old problem: the bot (sometimes) forgets to update some of the sections of Commons:Featured pictures, list. So the good news are: This was not a serious problem, your photo has been promoted correctly to Featured Picture status. The bad news are: We must check and manually update Commons:Featured pictures, list. I have done this, so now your photo is visible on Commons:Featured images, as expected. All the best and thank you so much for your beautiful photos, – Aristeas (talk) 07:55, 17 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

If possible, please take a look at that as well. Thank you in advance. Warm greetings from Friesland from Dominicus Bergsma--Famberhorst (talk) 15:50, 27 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

edit

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

You are receiving this message because you voted in the 2022 Picture of the Year contest.

CA?

edit

Thanks for voting on my image of this church in Belém -- but what's CA? I hadn't corrected the parallels on it yet, I hope that doesn't ruin the nomination. I might change the crop too. Prburley (talk)

Hello Prburley, sorry for the confusion – “CA” is a common abbreviation for chromatic aberrations. If you look closely at your photo, you can notice small colourful borders at edges with high contrast – mostly at almost all vertical lines of the pillars at the left (purple and yellow borders) and right (red and green borders). This is a result of the lens being not perfectly corrected for this aberration Of course the CAs in your photo are on a low level, this is why you probably did not notice the CAs at all. But because the walls, pillars and arches are white/yellowish, the CAs are still somewhat irritating for a practised eye. ;–)
Of course almost all lenses create some CAs (some more, some less), but it is possible to remove/reduce the CAs when editing the photo with Lightroom. If you have developed the photo from a raw image file (in the case of your Canon camera a *.CR2 or *.CR3 file), you can often remove most CAs by applying the correct lens profile (often done automatically by Lightroom) and/or by checking a single option (“Remove CAs”). If this is not sufficient, or if you do not have a *.CR2/*.CR3 file, but just an out-of-camera *.JPG file, it is possible to paint a “defringe” mask over all borders with CAs, this will remove CAs like the ones in your photo completely. I do this with almost every single one of my photos. Of course this is some extra work, but a beautiful photo like this one would be certainly worth the extra effort.
Hope this helps and all the best, – Aristeas (talk) 10:16, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
