Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk. ↔ User: Perhelion 15:53, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
File descriptions (UploadWizard)
editHey Chris die Seele, your SVG drawings are near excellent but on the other hand your file descriptions are pure crap.[1] :-P I notify you because it is not a single case, you create this crap on assembly line. I recommend for you don't use the UploadWizard, instead use the classic text based uploadform (so you can use your pre-filled text template). The UploadWizard is only practicable for casual and singel uploader. Thanks again, regards PS: If you need I can give you some scripts (also upload modifications). First, I recommend you to use this
importScript('User:Perhelion/JustReplace+.js');
(insert in your /common.js, for example) -- User: Perhelion 14:23, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
MfG -- User: Perhelion 22:17, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

- Good day. I do not know about programming. What is this script? What should I do with him? Why do not I have to use Replace? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chris die Seele (talk • contribs) 07:17, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
-
- Hey good to hear you, this script does near the same but more and is much easier to handle (it is loaded here and give you prefilled suggestions). On the other and your tool is not that really supported (anymore) and have some bugs.[2] (ok this script maybe too but not that strange, please report any). It also doess not replace all file usage (as you can easy check after replacing).
- You don't need programming really, simply copy&paste the text (if something is wrong the CodeEditor should warn you). Try it out, cheers -- User: Perhelion 08:45, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
- PS: It's not that bad to use the other tool. Maybe some of this is helpful for you: User:Perhelion/Code -- User: Perhelion 11:05, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
Welcome. I occasionally draw a coat of arms. However, about computer science and scripts I do not have the slightest idea. Scripts, stamps, numbers and letters tell me nothing. I would be grateful to you, if you had such a script prepared and wrote where I have to paste it. Thank you and wish you a happy Easter.--Chris die Seele (talk) 06:58, 11 April 2017 (UTC)
Wo hast du denn deine Erkenntnis her?
- Vermutlich versteht Chris nur sehr bedingt Deutsch!? -- User: Perhelion 20:30, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hi @Perhelion:
- Yes, I noticed that afterwards. I can't tell what exactly went wrong while using the Upload-Wizard, but it looks like Chris dumped the complete template COAInformation including its parameters into the description text box. I guess the Upload-Wizard was specifically made for people who don't know about Wiki syntax and would use plain text by default, so I can understand why there is no specific disclaimer like "do not paste entire Commons information templates here".
- The original is of course PD-Germany-Coa, but in heraldry it is common practice that the individual depiction of a coat of arms is copyrighted while only the blazon is PD. So even of the image is PD as in this case, when you add your own creative work to a free original image instead of just copying it faithfully, the result will not be PD any more. That said, the SVG code behind the graphical output may be an indirect original work as long as it is not created automatically by Inkscape or similar software. Unfortunately there is no such hint in the German version of Help:SVG but the Englich original has a paragraph on "copyright". And as mentioned above, PD and CC won't work as one combined licence because to grant a CC licence you need to hold the copyright for the work in the first place. So either the whole thing is out of copyright or it is copyrighted with a CC licence.
- The user name suggests otherwise but you may be up to something there. De728631 (talk) 14:31, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
- So I strongly advise Chris do not use the UploadWizard anymore for his CoA.
- @De728631: In Germany the depiction is PD also if it is a derivative. So you can not get copyright of a "ministerial" depiction (s de:Amtliches Wappen Urteil 1933) de:Namensrecht/de:Nutzungsrecht. If the "own creativity" is so much that is is "modicum of originality"/"threshold of originality" then it is not original/ministerial anymore. As we can see here on Commons that is common on German SVG CoA. That is also very logical because CoA have usually no author Attribution. Who will say on every CoA it is original or it is derivative? Who will say it is own creativity of whom? In Germany you need much more for this, for example also sports logos like CoAs (without original) are PD because of "lack of originality".
- -- User: Perhelion 14:37, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
- @Perhelion: You're right, if the original work in Germany is not protected, then there is no protection for a derivative either. But when it comes to SVG we have to distinguish between the artwork itself and the computer code because SVG is a script programming language that can achieve the same result with different ways of original programming. The creative part is turning the depiction on the source page into SVG code. Hence the SVG code is copyrightable and while the artwork itself is still PD, the image file as such becomes copyrightable. And as to coats of arms, if the depiction contains charges or anything else that is beyond a simple geometrical partition of the shield, then the depiction is automatically copyrighted too if it is recent enough. The exception in Germany is that municipal, state and federal arms can be seen as "official works (amtliche Werke)" which are exempt from copyright. That is why PD-Germany-Coa exists in the first place. Family arms for example would not be PD by default.
- But as to not spam Chris's page with these details that are beginning to become off-topic I suggest that we continue this part of the discussion elsewhere. De728631 (talk) 14:59, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
- I agree, it seems many space for clarification here (there are indeed not many sources for my claim too). -- User: Perhelion 17:06, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

COAinformation
editHey Chris die Seele,
- can you please say which editor and/or how your create your graphics? Because I would add a shortcut for your name (imgen, and create a user Cat for you), because you use a shortcut from another user, which give false credit to this user as creator.[3] Maybe also for personal interest, do you use a special technique?
- And again please do not use the UploadWizard for COAinformation, as we can see in addition to the template garbage, there are also the categories omitted from the original files. Greetings -- User: Perhelion 14:47, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
Welcome. I use Inkscape. All the coats were made by myself. Regards. --Chris die Seele (talk) 08:07, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Chris die Seele, here is your Cat Category:Valid SVG created with Inkscape:CoA by Chris die Seele I only sorted yet only some of your files. What strikes me is your very different usage of tinctures. For German CoA I suggest de:WP:WikiProjekt Wappen/Neuzeichnen#Tinkturen (Farben) (my personal favor is "Websichere Farben" or FIAV). Regards -- User: Perhelion 20:21, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- Hey Chris, you drawings are pretty nice, but in contrast your Wiki syntax is not. I hope you check it next time before you use it (faulty) a dozen times again. :P (PS: I do install above the mentioned script for you) Greetings -- User: Perhelion 13:14, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
MfG -- User: Perhelion 13:24, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

editHello Chris, I saw your nice ongoing diligent work on SVG. So I would ask you for a resume of how the tools work I installed for you. I see you don't use the VVA+ link (on the top if on view, or as buttons in the Wikieditor)? Indeed your could change the summary (so it would be not recognizable for me). I would suggest a few more, which could maybe helpful for you too:
- MediaWiki:Gadget-InformationToCOA.js - converts or add COAInformation (on the left side)
- Maybe https://tools.wmflabs.org/derivative/deri1.php
- You can always ask and suggest. Best regards -- User: Perhelion 07:51, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Vektorisierte Wappen erzeugen Wartungseinträge
editHallo Chris,
Beispiel: file:DEU Hochscheid COA.svg mit Wartungseintrag unter c:Category:Language templates with no text displayed
- Hallo zusammen.
Beispiel: In
|blazon =

Thanks for uploading File:DEU Wallerfing COA.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
