Frog vs. Toad guiro
[edit]Hi, I ran across your guiro picture and you state it's a frog-shaped guiro. It's actually a toad-shaped guiro--the parotid glands (which toads have and frogs do not) prove it pretty conclusively. And on a related note, I have a guiro exactly like that, but I was told it came from the Phillipines (I bought it in Arlington, VA from a Hallmark Store). Definitely a tourist-trap kinda thing churned out in great quantity.

Did you change the copyright notice to {{GFDL}} because you resolved its status on the Polish Wikipedia, or because of the comments about copyrightability of typefaces that you listed on Deletion requests? If the latter case, then shouldn't the files actually be {{PD}}? (If your answer is yes, I'll be happy to go through the work of changing the files. ^_^) -- Toby Bartels 08:54, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Like most copyright stuff, the whole think is a bit murky, but it seems that (most) fonts (in the US) cannot be copyrighted. I changed the tags to GFDL since you uploaded them, and contributions are uploaded as GFDL, but I think PD is also appropriate. Please feel free to change it if you want. Sorry for giving you a hard time about it, but these copyright issues give me a headache. Happy editing -- Chris 73 09:05, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)
If fonts cannot be copyrighted in the United States, then {{PD-US}} should be valid for the individual letters. (But I take back the claim for {{PD}}, because of other countries.) The table itself is still murky -- of course its data its not copyrightable, but the layout of the image may be.
Another approach is to try to track down who originally uploaded the image to the Polish Wikipedia. This would require bugging a developer to look up the information, which is currently hidden by the Phase II transition bug. If I'd realised that the images had been listed for deletion here, then I (hopefully) would have started down that route already. (Although in fact, I'm not sure where the best place is to start.)

Category Plurals
[edit]Hello Cris. On my talkpage you wrote: Hi. I think plural/singular categories are both useful. Singular categories have articles related to the general topic (i.e. in Category: Plane about wings, airflow, etc), and the plural has specific instances (i.e. category:Planes: Boeing 747, Airbus A300, Cessna...). What do you think -- Chris 73 04:33, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC) I certainly like this idea. Actually, it's quite similar system as we use on Russian Wikipedia. For example: We have category:City (Город in Russain) for pages like "city planning", "urbanisation", "urban transport" etc, and we also have category:cities (Города) for pages like Moscow, London, Berlin (actually, we have subcategorys by country) Sorry that i've answered so late. -- Kneiphof 10:20, 19 Dec 2004 (CET)

What to do with images on WP after transfer to Commons

Copyright rules for photos of museum pieces
[edit]I wonder whether you can help me. I would like some clarification about copyright rules in Germany. I have created the Wikipedia page on Gregor von Bochmann and I would like to add some images of paintings. The Museum in Düsseldorf allowed me to take a photo of a nice painting of this painter who died in 1930.
Question: Can I publish this photo in high resolution ?
When I took the photo, the museum administrator told me that I may publish it, but only in low resolution (which would be unsuitable for making a good print).
For a photo of a painting by Arnold Böcklin I found the copyright notice: Die Urheberrechts-Schutzdauer des hier abgebildeten flächigen Kunstwerks ist weltweit abgelaufen, da der Künstler bereits seit über 70 Jahren tot ist. Es ist somit gemeinfrei („public domain“). Ebenfalls gemeinfrei ist die vorliegende fotografische Wiedergabe des Werkes, da sie keine eigene Schöpfungshöhe aufweist.
Question: Was bedeutet "da sie keine eigene Schöpfungshöhe aufweist" ?
Es würde mich freuen, wenn Sie mir da etwas weiterhelfen könnten.

This image is used on Thomas7's French user page (fr:Utilisateur:Thomas7). This user uploaded it on Commons without mentioning its source. The problem is that the picture has been edited and is not a genuine reproduction : one could see an Nazi eagle and a svatiska twice on it on transparency, at the top of the picture (right and left). villy 18:46, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- That is not the truth. Look for the history of this image. The user Thomas7f (not myself Thomas7 without f) is abusing my Userid and is uploading nazi-images to bring down my reputation. In the german wikipedia and as a queer I had conflicts with right wing Studentenverbindungen. This kind of mobbing is typical for their behaviour. The picture of the famous painter Adolph Menzel was imprinted with nazi-emblems in watermarks by this mobber. Menzel died in 1905, his pictures could be seen in international galeries and are public domain. The picture was painted in 1837 by Eduard Magnus and is in the public domain too. My original computer image was without this watermark falsifications. I have reloaded the original file. The mobber try to camouflage false identity by bringing citations of my discussion texts on his discussion page. Thomas7 (in the french and english wikipedia without f) 00:00, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The above image was marked as a possible copyright violation by another editor. What I find strange, however, is that you yourself seem to be under the misconception that simply taking a series of images and putting them together means that you have ownership of the image and are allowed to license it out. If the images are public domain they are public domain, and unless you add something to thing of artistic merit, you do not get to license them. Further, if they are copyright violations, you obviously do not have authorization to license it out. You should be careful how you tag these things. 172.167.47.81 04:42, 28 July 2005 (UTC)
- Hi. It seems I have mixed up the sources, and the images originate from the Australian Navy. In this case, the source images have not been in public domain. About my relicensing: As I understand it, Images in the PD can be used, and if modified can be given another copyright. (That is why there are CC and GFDL licenses, otherwise we could just use PD on Wikipedia). The arranging of the images (cutting, stitching together, adding lines, etc.) was not a huge job, but still took some time. And I think at least US courts have very low standards for adding artistic value, this compiled image being one example of it. Hence I added a free license so that the derivatives created by me would stay free. I do not wish to clame fame for this work, but merely to keep it free. In any case, this is no longer a point for this image, since the source images were not PD to begin with. Hope this clarified my point, please let me know if you have a different legal view. Happy editing. -- Chris 73 10:23, 2 August 2005 (UTC)
Hi Chris,
please take a look at what I wrote in this image's page. The e-mail asking Fox for permission does not indicate that the image will be published without restrictions of use. I read at pt.wiki that the deletion of this image was voted and that the community decided to maintain it. In a nutshell, you can pretty much do anything you want with the picture, including selling it (as for example as a magazine cover), as long as the picture and its derivatives stay also under the same license, and me or wikipedia or both are credited for the picture. Image Tagging Image:SS Keenora and Wolverine docked at Berens River.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:SS Keenora and Wolverine docked at Berens River.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. skINMATE 22:47, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Commons-l subscription
[edit]Hello Chris 73/Archive 002,
as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.
If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 22:53, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
I have marked this image as copyvio - the websit's FAQ explicitely states that ADAM material is not work of government employees and copyrighted. Please make sure that you only upload images as PD-USGov that where really greated by the USGov - many images on government websites are not PD because they where created by a third party. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 11:43, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- Uups, yes, you are correct. My fault. Sorry. -- Chris 73 19:36, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Hello Chris, I found your cutaway image of the Chambered Nautilus shell while working on a simple web page that I have entitled The Divine Proportion and Mathematics of the Chambered Nautilus.
Thank you for making this beautiful image available for shared use! -- Chris 19:00, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
- You're welcome. Thanks for the credit to me and wikipedia. -- Chris 73 01:07, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
Glockenspiels - Glockenspiel (german) - Carillon
[edit]Hi Chris,
Image Tagging Image:Allianz Arena Sonnensegel.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Allianz Arena Sonnensegel.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.
Thank you. - If you would have read the image page, it states clearly that "This image was created by Chris 73" (that's me). I removed the "Source missing" notice. Let me know if there are any problems with that. -- Chris 73 21:24, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
- Hallo, es geht nicht um die Lizenz des Fotografen, sondern des Architekten bzw. der Inhaber der Urheberrechte am Gebäude (siehe Commons:Bearbeitungen. Ich habe den Tag deshalb wieder gesetzt. --Wikipeder 08:15, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Photo of Rosetta Stone
[edit]Hi, I am a stock footage researcher working on an educational children's television show. We'd like to use your image of the Rosetta Stone in our show. Could you please contact me immediately to discuss. Thanks, Dina dina@apartment11.tv
- Hi. The image is available freely for any purpose. For details see the imag page Image:DemoticScriptsRosettaStoneReplica.jpg. Please note, that this is only a photo of a replica. If you have any other questions, please let me know. -- Chris 73 04:41, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Animated GIF...
[edit]What tool did you use to make them? Are there any free ones? --Scienceman123 02:58, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I used GIMP, which is free (Windows and Unix), and has a animated gif plugin. I also used Irfan View and OpenOffice.org for some preparationary work. -- Chris 73 06:16, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Linimo photo
[edit]Hi there, Chris. Thanks for all your great work.
Your magnificent photo of the Linimo, which appears in Wikipedia in both the Linimo article & the maglev train entry, has an erroneous station name in its title. I hope you'll be able to fix that at some point. Thank you.
Kusakabe Kimbei
[edit]It's great that you uploaded these Kusakabe images. But it is important to indicate in the summary when an image is only "possibly by" a given photographer. It is often difficult to attribute an early photograph to the correct photographer so mentioning any doubt as to attribution is essential. Also, it's helpful to add the photographic process and date (if known) of the image. thanks. Pinkville 18:00, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Image names
[edit]Hi Chris - Image:Cedar lined path to the Togakushi shrine1.jpg and Image:Cedar lined path to the Togakushi shrine2.jpg are wrongly named; the trees are Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica), not cedars (Cedrus). would you be willing to re-upload with better names, please? - thanks, MPF 23:02, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
- Many thanks! - MPF 23:43, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hello,
If you consent for statistics to be published about your actions as an administrator, please sign here: Commons:Administrator permission for statistics. (I expect that most people will not have a problem with it unless you are especially concerned with privacy.)
Also, please be aware that we now have a Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. Please put it on your watchlist, if you haven't already!

Hi,
it would be nice when you could provide the missing information (source, date of creation, author) for this picture.
Greetings,--Wiggum 17:36, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- I uploaded the image 2 years ago, I have no idea where I got it from, but due to its age it is PD-Art. Sorry. -- Chris 73 11:30, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Sealand map SVG
[edit]Hi. I converted your Image:Map_of_Sealand_with_territorial_waters.png to svg. What do you think? Also what license do I publish it under? --Indolences 21:29, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
edit: I forgot to link to it. Image:Map_of_Sealand_with_territorial_waters.svg --Indolences 21:31, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
- No problem. Now there is the original OpenOffice file, the png and the svg. I updated the image infos -- Chris 73 22:34, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Thank you. I also just made Image:Map_of_Sealand.svg. I will be cleaning both up a little to lower the file size. Also, as per your "ShareAlike" request, should I keep your license? I'd prefer public domain, but I think you did most of the work so I'll leave it up to you. --Indolences 04:08, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Edit: I got it from 208kb to 180kb. Then I "simplified" the mainland, which lowered the size to 135. I have uploaded both versions for now. What do you think of the "simplified" one? Image:Map of Sealand with territorial watersTWO.svg
Be seeing you! --Indolences 05:52, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your edits. I think there is not much difference between the 180 and 135 kb versions, and uploading the larger would not make any more trouble for other users. My personal preference is for the 180kb version. Please always link to derivatives on the original file and vice versa. As for licensing, I prefer the CC or GFDL licenses, my pref would be to just keep my tag. Otherwise you can also use only a CC or GFDL license if you wish. -- Chris 73 07:55, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

- Restored tag removed by anon, and also updated the obsolete PD tag. Thanks for the notice -- Chris 73 20:41, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
- I regret that too many untagged images and my limited time cannot always allow me to check image description history. Thanks for providing a more descriptive PD tag as well as I could not determine. You may also want to use page watching so you can better track changes.--Jusjih 16:44, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Several months hither, you linked to this relative to a (rather bizarre and absurd) suggestion that an image of flies mating was exorbitantly sexual for the main page. Not only did I not readily see all nine dolphins—to be sure, I've long since known my mind to be in the gutter—but I've still not found three of them; the picture has become autostereogrammatic. I only hope that you can return to me these last twenty minutes of my life... :) Jahiegel 05:59, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Adapted version of one of your photos
[edit]Hi Chris, I made some changes to one of your photos, Image:Hangmans Noose Final.jpg and uploaded the new version as Image:Hangmans Noose.jpg. The idea was to have a basic picture of just the rope that could be used in templates, infoboxes, userboxes etc. I've included your original lincense as well as one for my changes. Please check it over and make sure your are happy with it. Thanks for creating the original, WJBscribe (WJB talk) 01:34, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:Alexander Calder Mobile.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Hi Chris. I uploaded an slightly cropped version with a slightly warmer colour. Hope this is ok. Cheers, --Rebroad 13:00, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, I liked the old one better. The new version looks like a fake sepia to me. Bit in any case, I can live with either version. Best wishes, -- Chris 73 21:13, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
