⚤ as a sortkey

[edit]

Could you please explain what the ⚤ symbol is supposed to mean as a sort key in categories (e.g. for female handball players)? After reading Wiktionary in particular, I don't get it. DCB (talk) 22:45, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can you tell me what the correct sort key is, because first "Women" is used then (here) "Women&F" and then (here) only a space!? In other categories a "+" or "&" or "&Female" is also used. Many just do whatever there is no consistency at all. It is all very messy! Antoine.01overleg(Antoine) 12:41, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are no standardized rules as to how exactly a sorting should look according to such categories, the main requirement is that the sorting key is sufficiently clear. It is not a big problem that there are no uniform rules, especially for categories that contain a maximum of two to three subcategories. Very often, the only thing to be found in such sortings is only a space oder space followed by the gender. If several subcategories contain the same sort key, the category name determines the order. However, the use of a symbol that is not an ASCII code is always difficult.
What do you think ⚤ is supposed to mean? Why do you think this is a suitable sortkey? DCB (talk) 19:33, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The question "Why do you think this is a suitable sort key" should be asked to the person who started this years ago. I adopted this for the sake of uniformity. So not like (here) where "Women&F" is used and by the same person (here) only a space! But I see that you can just do whatever you want, that is very strange and sloppy! No, I am asking you this question because you have used this sortkey en masse. When you have taken it over, you will surely have noticed that there are completely different approaches to this question.
By the way, I can't tell from your diffs that the same person has added different sortkeys. DCB (talk) 06:08, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
