editBeing in academia (professor) , he fails to meet WP:PROF. Awards such as Junior research fellow... are not not significant to be listed here. ouieak (talk) 21:54, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
- He meets the alternative WP:PROF criteria the academic is more notable than the average college instructor/professor. Also he satisfies WP:GNG easily and as an author (with multiple reviews in reliable sources, he would make it in as an author). As an academic, his field of expertise (which is Tamil history in colonial period and Tamil literary history of the 19th and 20th centuries) is relatively esoteric for the English speaking world (hence the paucity of mentions in google scholar). He gets interviewed and quoted in Tamil (and english media covering tamil nadu) print and literary sources regularly for recent literary developments. He has had very good amount of coverage in Tamil print sources (which are behind paywall.). As examples of "significant coverage" in "Reliable and secondary sources" i would offer these
- 1) Ref no 10 (an interview in Kumudam - the highest selling Tamil magazine in India)
- 2) Ref no 8 (an interview in Indian Express - sunday edition)
- 3) Ref no 7 (an interview in Outlook (magazine)
- 4) Ref nos 4 and this (where his recent work gets covered in The Hindu)
- 5) Coverage and reviews for his books - Hindu book launch 1, hindu 2 (review), outlook review, Hindu review2, Frontline review 1, Hindu review 3, Indian Express1, Hindu review 4.
- 6) He gets quoted/interviewed in print and electronic media (and thus viewed as an expert on 19/20 century TN) in issues relating to Tamil politics - India Today1, India Today 2, Economic Times, The Telegraph, CNN IBN1, CNN IBN2, BBC News. He also reviews books for The Hindu [1]. The 180 gbook hits he gets amply indicate he is regarded as an expert in his field.
- 7) His works are part of the curriculum in schools and colleges
There is much more coverage in Tamil sources as indicated by nearly 3700 Tamil Ghits for his name. --Sodabottle (talk) 04:17, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
To sum up a) He meets WP:GNG b) He meets #1 for WP:AUTH and c) meets alternate criteria for WP:PROF. --Sodabottle (talk) 05:20, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
- As a professor, he is not notable. He may be as a writer or something. But I do not find him getting any significant awards such as State Sahitya Academy in his discipline or National or some popular awards from Tamil Nadu. Local news coverage does not mean he is notable. Google scholar citations are low [2] for his work available in english. I'm afraid whether he really meets #1 WP:AUTH. Visiting positions indicate just that he was given some postdoctoral or teaching assignment for a short period of 6 months to 1 year.. thx. --ouieak (talk) 01:43, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- Ok. If you are not convinced, take this to AfD. Previous AfD for authors and persons with this level of news coverage have always been easily kept. ("local news coverage" you speak about is in media outlets with millions of circulation). I have specifically asked not to use Gscholar here because of the obscure and bilingual nature of his research work . Presence of his works in Text books (in both school and college levels) indicate he indeed meets #1 for WP:AUTH. I thought i would spare us some time and effort from doing an AfD. I would suggest reading past author AfDs before to get an idea of where consensus stands in that area. --Sodabottle (talk) 04:33, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- I have no intention of afding this page. I came across this page and liked it. Yes, this person has a potential to grow as a notable downtheroad. He is a young fellow and I'm proud of him. I shared what I felt about the page. Thanks.--ouieak (talk) 13:41, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
