Requested move 6 August 2015
editThis discussion was listed at Wikipedia:Move review on 27 September 2015. The result of the move review was Overturn and move to Association football at the 1956 Summer Olympics, creating a disamb page at Football at the 1956 Summer Olympics. |

The result of the move request was: Closing as a failure. This should have been closed immediately, because moving pages away from naming conventions is a profoundly bad, and actually non-enforceable, idea. Nyttend (talk) 14:24, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Football at the 1956 Summer Olympics → Association football at the 1956 Summer Olympics – I realise these Olympics soccer/football articles are usually called just football, but in this case it's ambiguous with Australian football at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Football at the 1956 Summer Olympics should become a dab. Jenks24 (talk) 23:17, 6 August 2015 (UTC) Relisted. BDD (talk) 13:53, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose I think this can be handled with the {{distinguish}} between the two as while it could cause some confusion, it's unlikely to do so. I'll drop a note on the Olympic Project's talkpage for more input. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 06:55, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- I think it would cause confusion for any Australian reader. Second to that, it implies no other code of football was played at this Olympics – while that is true for most Olympics, and hence why we use the ambiguous term "football" for most Olympics articles, it's obviously not true for 1956. Jenks24 (talk) 09:34, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose per Lugnuts. Sawol (talk) 09:49, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose Surely Australian football at the 1956 Summer Olympics should be changed to it's proper name of Australian rules football at the 1956 Summer Olympics, if you change one Olympic football title you have to change them all.(Iantheimp (talk) 17:17, 9 August 2015 (UTC))
- I would not be opposed to that move, though the current title is not incorrect, Australian football being the official name of the code and, from what I can gather from the article, the name used by the IOC at the time. I completely disagree with the assertion that if you move one Olympic football/soccer title you need to move them all. It's simply a case of disambiguation being required in this unique case. Jenks24 (talk) 09:34, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
- Weak support per nom -- 67.70.32.190 (talk) 05:38, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
- Support. This makes good sense: in this year, at least, "football at the Summer Olympics" is ambiguous, which should be avoided for any descriptive title.--Cúchullain t/c 13:33, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
- Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. --BDD (talk) 13:53, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support - just this year given the two codes. GiantSnowman 16:35, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support - for this year only given the two codes played. Recommend this page become a disambiguation page. — Jkudlick tcs 22:37, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support for this year only, per the above arguments. ONR (talk) 11:07, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- Comment {{Only-two-dabs}} The disambiguation page is not needed. This is the primary topic. Australian football at the 1956 Summer Olympics was held just one time. It is sufficient to use {{distinguish}}. Sawol (talk) 11:37, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support for this year only, per nom, and change to disambiguation page. There is no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC between the two codes, especially given the predominant usage of one code in Australia, and the fact that the Olympics is not the most major competition for international association football. — Amakuru (talk) 11:16, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support move but not dab Being as "football" everywhere outside the USA and Australia means Association football, it seems consistent with the principle of least confusion to have Football at the 1956 Summer Olympics redirect to
Association football at the 1956 Summer Olympics, with disambiguating hatnotes to lead people to the desired destination.--Aervanath (talk) 18:08, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
