Thanks to whoever has improved this page recently - it's looking much better. OlderBrother 13:57, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yes - slowly this page has been getting better and better as more people have taken interest. This current revision is indeed very good. Well done to all editors of it! SIGURD42 18:14, 31 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

A couple of pictures of the town would be nice. I think ideal subjects would be either the town hall, the minster or the markets. Preferably on a sunny day!

Origin of the name

edit

I've put this as a separate section to History, as there seems to be some controversy about the origin. I'll try and put in references to my online sources asap. Some of the theories seem pretty weak to me, but I'm not in a position to make a definitive call on this. Growing up, I was told it meant "David's Fort", so I'm leaning towards theory no. 2. --OlderBrother 19:54, 5 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

When I was at school (either Eastborough Infants and Junior or the Wheelwright grammar school, can't recall how old I was) I was taught that in the Middle Ages it was known as Daw's Green. This was backed by a duplicated map of the mediaeval settlement. However, I kave no source for that beyond my own recollection! --APRCooper 20:06, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

As far as i know DawGreen wasn't a name for Dewsbury but was a name the area between Westown/Boothroyd LanE and where the new house flats were built near The Flatts . . .near where the Sawdust working mans club was

LLers

edit

I love how at the bottom there was a sentence that referred to people from LUElinks as faggot LLers. I fixed it. I'm just wondering who originally wrote this page...

Can somebody define "LLers"? --Sanguinus 00:01, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I removed it. If it does mean townie or chav, it's an NPOV problem anyway. Definately not suitable. --Sanguinus 03:14, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, please explain, link or delete it Marriex 11:52, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I think that it may be another word for "chav", "scally", "townee", etc. I can't think of anything that Dewsbury's "well-known for", apart from being a very tough town. I think that this article reflects that quite well.

It means Leeds Loiners ...

Mohammad Sidique Khan

edit

Technically, Dewsbury wasn't his "home town". It was only his home town in the sense that it was where he was living just before he commited the terrorist attacks. "Home town" means the place you grew up in. He was born in Leeds and grew up in Beeston, and was only living in Dewsbury since the beginning of this year.

Obviously he should be in the article as he is connected to Dewsbury, but only in a similar the same way to Patrick Stewart- neither were born and raised in Dewsbury, but they have a connection there as the both lived and/or worked there at some point.

asc, 6th Nov 2005

The dictionary definition of hometown can be either place of birth or place of residence. On a connected note the latest news release of another Dewsbury resident arrested on charges relating to terrorism should be included. Maybe make a seperate heading dealing with the negative impact on Dewsbury and the local Asian community due to the terrorism/terrorists. Death Eater Dan (Muahaha) 02:36, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
MSK where his hometown as etc, etc... All should be in the MSK article. Its nonsensical to put it in here in all honesty. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.11.171.92 (talk) 08:32, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

On education...

edit

St. John Fishers RC High School has consistantly got a high OFSTED report (or should I say low) averaging between 2-3 (1 being the best) and i think therefore should get a mention in the education section. (i won't get into the outstanding grades year after year) the ofsted grading is as follows: 1=outstanding 2=good 3=satisfactory 4=in-adequate the most recent ofstead report gained a 2-good that must deserve a mention as 1's are near-on impossible to get! Riot

edit

Someone obviously doesn't like mentioning the riots. I understand that they're not the nicest of things, but they can't be ignored. I don't know much about the 1989 one, but understand that it was quite big news at the time. The one in December was only small, but this was indicated in the article. Does anyone want to say why they don't want these things to be mentioned? Epa101 17:16, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Were the riots significant enough? Were they reported in the local/regional/national press? first I've heard of them, plus the wording on riots/race relations on this page seems to be sensationalist rather than factual.--Msp 22:40, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, they were at the time, although it's a while ago. However, after the unpleasant use of that part of the article, I think that I might go back on above statement and say that we need change. It is undeniable that Dewsbury has problems with race relations, but hearing about that neo-Nazi video persuades me that it might be best to stick to happy topics. Epa101 23:00, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've decided to remove all content to do with race relations. I know that that's not strictly in accordance with policy, but I think that this was an emergency. Epa101 23:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Important

edit

This article was actually quoted by a neo-Nazi video "Dewsbury needs help". I think that the demographics section might need a bit of rewording. Epa101 22:41, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think the entire demographics section needs a full rework as it's been subject to so much abuse, additions/edits should always be approached from a fact providing perspective rather than with a soapbox slant. I don't think attention shouldn't be brought to minor incidents which have no impact on the town itself, or on how it's seen. I agree with Epa101 that possibly only 'happy topics' should be added to the page to prevent future vandalism. Msp 06:49, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Retail

edit

I think a separate retail section could be added. This section would include further details about the famous market and the possible decline of the town centre (with Marks and Spencer closing, increasing amount of empty shops etc). Msp 06:40, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Although the market is mentioned, I think it should be noted that at one point it was one of the most popular in the country. Thanks.

Having visited Dewsbury in July 2014 I think the 'possible decline of the town centre' should be changed to simply the 'decline of the town centre'. It's deadsville - lots of closed shops and no major names; those that are open are mainly bookmakers and pound shops. The market may still be good but otherwise this is unquestionably a once proud borough which is now a visibly failed town that is going nowhere except down further. Cassandra. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.5.8.166 (talk) 12:22, 8 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Concentration on negative incidents

edit

In the recent section of the article here is heavy concentration of negative aspects, which I think is unnecessary - I think we need some more positivity there to balance the article out a little. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.11.171.92 (talk) 08:30, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Names of businesses

edit

I'm still not convinced that the names of the supermarkets opening stores in the area have any particular relevance to the article. The edits I made (some of which were reverted) were a rather hasty attempt at making this article less POV. I'm sorry that I blanket-deleted those sections - perhaps someone would now be prepared to rewrite some sections of the article omitting the rather non-encyclopedic parts e.g. "The town centre is starting to see a something of a revival", political commentary out of scope of the article e.g. "the headteacher of the school, Nicola Roth, has been highly critical of School League Tables in the UK and has been reported to have said "It would be better if league tables did not exist"." and also elements that are likely to change over time (there are rather a lot fo these). Various inappropriate content

edit

"In 1836 Benjamin Chadwick established what would become Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors (still going strong 174 years later and one of the largest law firms in the UK), with the first office on Church Street, Dewsbury (where Boots the Chemist is now)." Several objections to this addition.

  1. Is Benjamin Chadwick notable in his own right? (see [1])
  2. Is the Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors notable? (see [2])
  3. "...still going strong..." may be POV (see [3])
  4. Location of first office - is this of interest if 1. and 2. are not both confirmed?
  5. "...where Boots the Chemist is now..." - this is not encylopaedic content, rather a "guidebook".(see [4])
  6. Could this comment just be seen as promotional (see [5])

Response to Various inappropriate content

edit

In response to Jimjamjak comments:

  1. This entry is not a new addition, and was not initally made by me. I merely corrected the date of establishment and referenced the significance of the name so that exactly this sort of objection to the content would not arise.
  2. The firm Chadwick Lawrence is a household name in the area, one of the largest employers in the area, and one of the largest law firms in the region/country.
  3. Benjamin Chadwick is notable in so far as his name and legacy enures to this day in the public conciousness - something which, I would suggest, is most unlikely to be something that could be said of many of the other 'notable people' on the list in 175 years. In my opinion, (and whoever contributed the story in the first place's opinion), his name carries with it a great success story, and is therefore a famous, notable son. Ultimately, who is, and who is not a 'notable person' is a POV.
  4. I agree that "...where Boots the chemist is now..." is not encyclopaedic content and should be removed, and that "...still going strong.." is a POV and should also be removed.
  5. If this is to be seen as promotional content, then is Leigh Bromby not promotional content for Leeds United, or Jon Worthington for Huddersfield Town AFC, (incidentally - neither of whom I personally have ever heard of)?

I have therefore re-introduced the entry, with the greatest of respect, taking the above comments into account. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yorkshire lawyer (talkcontribs) 12:05, 19 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the prompt response. I think that you may have misunderstood what is considered notable by Wikipedia. Please note that I made my edits in line with Wikipedia's editorial policy (as I have understood it) and not according to my own interests etc. I looked up Benjamin Chadwick in the obvious places, and couldn't find anything of note. Although few things could be further from my personal interest than football and its players, I do note that those you mention in your comments have quite considerable web presence and lengthy Wikipedia pages edited by a large number of people. I don't suggest that presence on the internet necessarily confers notability on a person, however, and would therefore encourage you to start a page on Benjamin Chadwick, as there doesn't seem to be one. But before you do so, I would strongly suggest that you read carefully the guidance on notability, and make sure that any information about the man in question is carefully cited from independent sources. The same applies for the law firm. I disagree that the law firm is one of the largest in the UK, as it is in joint 166th place. I think this is long way from "one of the top" by any standards. I have removed the link to this firm for the time being, as I still regard this to be promotional and as such it is inappropriate here. Please read this link, particularly point 5, regarding promotional linking and this link about notability of companies etc. "Local" notability is generally not enough for either persons or organizations. Forgive me if I haven't been through other people in the list yet and checked their notability - I will endeavour to do this asap.Jimjamjak (talk) 02:40, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Famous People...

edit

I was always under the impression that Greg Rusedski had a link with Dewsbury. Was it his Mum? can anyone shed light? Does that qualify? Did he ever live in the area or always in Canada? I remember the lead singer from Black Lace (Agadoo etc) moving to between Thornhill and Thornhil Lees. Does that count? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.205.221.83 (talkcontribs) 04:50, 20 July 2012‎ (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation of Dewsbury

edit

In 2011 a contribution of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dewsbury&diff=c816950844&oldid=457395896 gave a contribution to the IPA pronunciation of Dewsbury cited from Oxford B.B.C. Guide to Pronunciation, Oxford, 2006, page 99.

On 24 December 2017 this was updated with no reference as to why. Unfortunately I do not have reference to the original source to see if one or both are consistent with it, but in the absence of comment as to the reason of the update it seems reasonable to revert this latest revision.

For anyone who interested a local pronunciation of Dewsbury is available at http://sounds.bl.uk/Accents-and-dialects/Millenium-memory-bank/021M-C0900X08524X-0400V1 just after 4:53.Djm-leighpark (talk) 19:57, 27 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Notable people

edit

@Djm-leighpark: The purpose of this section is surely to provide a list of notable people who have a significant connection to the town. Strictly limiting it to people who were born there is a poor way to achieve that. It excludes people who are closely associated with the town arbitrarily, because they were born elsewhere, and includes people who have no connection but who's parents happened to briefly live there when they were born. People from a place is a more flexible criteria that also matches our category tree, i.e. Category:People from Dewsbury. – Joe (talk) 08:35, 11 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

For whatever reason the list as its stands is for people born in Dewsbury, possibly for avoid the list becoming of WP:UNDUE length and ensuring people appear on a single list. Any change might likely be controversial and garner consensus. But I've seen you won the edit war so it will only cause me upset to remain here.Djm-leighpark (talk) 09:09, 11 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Unsure why it was limited to people born in the town as noted at the top of the section the hospital location meant that people were born there and that was their only connection to the place. I would go with those that have a significant connection to the town. Though I would comment that every entry in the section should have a reference to prove that they are appropriate to be placed here, currently only 1 entry has a reference. May be the list should be moved to a stand alone article if it grows to an unmanageable size. Keith D (talk) 11:31, 11 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I do notice the issue has been raised on the talk page above, and I'm happy with consensus. That said I have done anti vandalism help on this page in the past, and having just been edit warred battered this article is now off my watch list and I leave it to others. Significant contribution to the town is the key point. Thankyou.Djm-leighpark (talk) 11:53, 11 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Investigating the history, and subject for any mistakes I may have made, the section was originally Natives then Famous people born in Dewsbury and changed to Notable people at [6] by Jza84 on 4 July 2008. SnoopingAsUsual on 15 February 2012 seems to have (re)imposed the born in Dewsbury constraint [7]. Joe Roe circa 10 june 2020 [8] forced the breaking of the constraint before bringing it here. Guideline on the matter Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements#Notable people is Provide information of notable individuals that were born, or lived for a significant amount of time, in the settlement. will probably win ... therefore .... can someone, it will likely need someone from a Lancashire House, as Yorkshiremen, admins, checkusers, oversighters, and arbcom do not seem capable, please remove/adjust the article comment "Editors note; Please only add names of people born in the town..." as it is inconsistent. Thankyou.Djm-leighpark (talk) 00:14, 14 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
