According to Amazon as well as the book's jacket cover, the author is Sandra Scoppettone, using 'Jack Early' as a pseudonym. The linked Jack Early doesn't write detective fiction; he's an artist. Even the Wikipedia article on Scoppettone lists her as the author of the original book upon which the movie was based.
