Administrators

edit

I am a new user and have a question concerning administrators. I was wondering how you become and administrator? Is this something that is easy to achieve or does is take a while? Should I get more experience before submiting my name? Also, how do you submit your name for administratorhood. Thank You,

Pr€mi€r~$h@wn (talk) 01:59, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Administrators are key people on Wikipedia. They can delete pages, block users, protect pages from editing, and several other things. To try to become an administrator, you must submit your name to the Requests for Adminship page, where users will either support and oppose your bid. I would strongly recommend at least six months of editing and 6,000+ edits before even considering putting in a request for adminship, as candidates do not pass by very easily and are heavily scrutinized. You should also probably get involved with things like articles for deletion and vandalism patrol to gain more experience in admin-related areas.
If you want to read more, take a look at the Wikipedia guidelines for administrators or the guide to requests for adminship.
Happy editing,

Graphics

edit

I am a new user and was wondering how graphics are inserted on your page. I was not able to find the article that explains how to. Thank you,

Pr€mi€r~$h@wn (talk) 18:35, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

As in graphics, do you mean images or something else? A8x (talk) 21:33, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
When I said graphics I mean the rectangular boxes that are on some user's user page that states there political affiliations, and things like that.

Pr€mi€r~$h@wn (talk) 02:17, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oh, those are called userboxes. You can find them here. See "gallery" for a list of them. A8x (talk) 02:37, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re: SPI Clerk Training

edit

I would love to, but I'm taking a break at the moment (just like what told to my other trainee few days ago[1]) OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:33, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ok, that's no problem. Can you recommend any other users who would be able to train me? A8x (talk) 17:34, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
You know what? While you're waiting for me, read this note that I left a note for that trainee.[2] Have you involved in SPI before (i.e. filed a case or commented on any)? OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:38, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I am somewhat familiar with the SPI process, I did file this report quite awhile back. However, after a year long wikibreak, do see that the bot is down and things have changed a bit. I re-read the process to re-familiarize myself yesterday, and i think I still have a good grasp on how it runs. A8x (talk) 17:45, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Suspected sock puppets process was a long time ago. Now all the pages merged and unified into SPI to streamline the process. And it looks like they have a new template (Template:SPI case status) to further expedite the process. OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:52, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
If you can't wait for my return, try ask at Wikipedia talk:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Clerks. A lot of clerks have watchlisted that page and maybe another will take you. OhanaUnitedTalk page 00:51, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Adopt-a-user reminder

edit

Hello, I have completed a general cleanup of the adopter information page for the adopt-a-user project, located here. During my cleanup, I have removed several inactive and retired users. In order to provide interested adoptees with an easy location to find adopters, it is essential that the page be up-to-date with the latest information possible. Thus:

  • If you are no longer interested in being an adopter, please remove yourself from the list.
  • If you are still interested, please check the list to see if any information needs to be updated or added - especially your availability. Thank you.
  • You are receiving this message because you are listed as an adopter here.

An update from adopt a user

edit

Hi there Avenged Eightfold! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Once again, thank you for participating in the adopt-a-user program! If you wish to respond to this post, please message me on my talk page.

Proposed deletion of Violence in baseball

edit

The article Violence in baseball has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable intersection of topics. Sources discuss only isolated incidents, and not the topic as a whole.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. File permission problem with File:Boyden School.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Boyden School.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 20:37, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I noticed that you have undone my changes I made to Margaret Mahy's page. I'll have you know that the information I added in was in fact TRUE, and accurate. As a matter of fact, as I changed in the page, Margaret Mahy sadly passed away today, a well known and loved author of my country, New Zealand. So I kindly ask you, to change what you have done. If you do not believe me: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10821682

Replaceable fair use File:Nagy 3.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Nagy 3.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. VernoWhitney (talk) 14:42, 25 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

New deal for page patrollers

edit

Hi Avenged Eightfold,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

  3. "Hide trusted users" checkbox option on watchlists and related/recent changes (RC) pages
  4. Real-Time Recent Changes App for Android
  5. Shortcut for patrollers to last changes list

Further, there are more than 20 proposals related to Watchlists in general that you may be interested in reviewing. (and over 260 proposals in all, across many aspects of wikis)

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Note: You received this message because you have transcluded {{User wikipedia/RC Patrol}} (user box) on your user page. Since this message is "one-time-only" there is no opt out for future mailings.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Dwight weapons.ogg

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Dwight weapons.ogg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:40, 15 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of File:Sports games logo.png

edit

The file File:Sports games logo.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused logo with no article used, it's also can't move to commons because of an unused logo will be deleted as of out of project scope.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Proposed deletion of File:Rudy soundtrack.jpg

edit

The file File:Rudy soundtrack.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free album cover being used in a decorative manner in Rudy (film)#Soundtrack. Non-free album cover art is generally allowed to be used for primary identification purposes in stand-alone articles about albums, but its use in other articles is generally only allowed when the cover art itself is the subject of sourced critical commentary as explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-3 and the context for non-free use required by WP:NFCC#8 is evident. There is no such commentary for this particular album cover anywhere in the article, and the use of soundtrack album cover art in articles about films or TV programs is generally not allowed for this reason as explained in WP:FILMSCORE.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

edit

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:DragonMushu.png.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 09:33, 19 January 2022 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 09:33, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Weather: Map Dot & Template/Infobox Colors

edit

Dear project member, This message is being sent out to encourage new ideas and feedback on those proposed in regard to the colors debate for WikiProject Weather. For those who are unaware of what's been happening over the last year, I will give a brief summary. We have been discussing proposed changes to the colors of the dots on tropical cyclone maps and templates and infoboxes across the entire weather project in order to solve issues related to the limited contrast between colors for both normal vision as well as the various types of color blindness (MOS:ACCESS). We had partially implemented a proposal earlier this year, however, it was objected to by a number of people and additional issues were presented that made it evident this wasn't the optimal solution. We tried to come up with other solutions to address the issues related to color contrast, however, none of them gained traction and no consensus was generated.

We need your help and I encourage you to propose your own scale and give feedback on those already listed. Keep in mind that we are NOT making a decision on any individual proposal at this time. We are simply allowing people to make proposals and cultivate them given feedback from other project members. Please visit our project page for additional details. The proposal phase will close no later than December 31st at 23:59 UTC. NoahTalk 04:17, 21 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for uploading File:Touchdown Jesus mural (Notre Dame stadium).jpg.

While the image description page states the source and copyright status of the derivative work, it only names the creator of the original work without specifying the status of their copyright over the work.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the original image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
