Wikipedia:Proposed article splits
This page has a backlog that requires the attention of willing editors. Please remove this notice when the backlog is cleared. |
This is the page to make requests for the splitting of an article into two or more separate articles.
This process is usually undertaken to keep articles from becoming too large or unfocused; but may also occur when an element of an existing article gains substantial notoriety in its own right. In such a case, requests for splitting-off said content from an existing article into a newer, stand-alone article, should be directed here. After familiarizing yourself with the splitting process, please make your requests for article splitting below.
All split comments and discussions should be directed to the "discussion" subsection of the Original Article's Talk Page, NOT here.
Note
editSplits of CATEGORIES should not be proposed here. Please see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
Splits of TEMPLATES should not be proposed here. Please see Wikipedia:Templates for discussion.
MERGING of ARTICLES should not be proposed here. Please see Wikipedia:Proposed article mergers.
Split requests
editIf you need assistance with proposing a split, list it below and someone will make sure it's properly listed. Note that this will not get the split completed, as there may be a backlog, and splits often require considerably more discussion than, for instance, a merge request. To request a split, list the article below as well as requested target article title(s). Include a short descriptive reason why you think a split is in order. Please sign your request(s). Thank you.
Making a request
editIf you need assistance with proposing a split, list it below in "NEW REQUESTS" and someone will make sure it's properly listed. Note that this will not get the split completed on its own. After a split is listed properly, move it to the "Answered requests" or "Awaiting consensus" sections below as appropriate. Please list new requests at the bottom of the section. Use the edit summary and list at least a link to the original article. Please legitimize your request by signing each listing or comment by typing four tildes (~~~~). Unsigned requests can not be honored.
To request your split, copy the following template, paste it at the bottom of the NEW REQUESTS section, and fill in (replace) the article titles specific to your request, and give the reason why you think the page should be split. (NOTE: Often the original article name and one of the preferred new names are the same. However, at least one of the preferred new name(s) should appear red.) Indicate if your request will involve Page Moves, creating Disambiguation Page(s), or any other related work. Also, please indicate if you are willing to do the split if such a consensus is reached.

edit- Split Simon Ekpa into Biafra Liberation Army and Ekpa Simon Njoku. Right now, typing in "Biafra Liberation Army" redirects to the Simon Ekpa article. There are news articles about the BLA. There is also a TRAC page about them.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] Battlesnake1 (talk) 00:47, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- Split On Tat Estate and On Tai Estate into On Tat Estate and On Tai Estate. The reason is On Tat Estate, which is located at 3 On Chui Street and was completed in 2016, comprises 11 blocks with a total of 9,356 flats while On Tai Estate, which is located at 20 On Sau Road and was completed in 2017 and 2018, comprises 11 blocks with 8,561 units. - Split Apple Watch into Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra. With the announcement of the Apple Watch Ultra 2, it is clear that Apple sees the device as a seperate product line similar to the iPhone Pro series. The Ultra line of watches have a specific target market (hiking, trailing, & diving) and have enough distinct hardware and software features that set them apart from standard Apple Watch models even further than typical generational upgrades. - (DISCUSS) SPLIT Mullins River into two articles covering the two different topics that this article has melded together; Mullins River (river) and Mullins River (village) -- 67.70.25.175 (talk) 11:23, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
- Split Shoulder Arthritis into Glenohumeral arthritis and Acromioclavicular arthritis. The shoulder comprises the sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, glenohumeral, and scapulothoracic articulations. Each of these articulations should be considered separately as they have unique symptoms, epidemiology, and management. This split would involve the creation of separate acromioclavicular and glenohumeral osteoarthritis pages and the subsequent deletion of the Shoulder Arthritis page. If agreed, I {will} do the split. - (DISCUSS) Split Max Verstappen into Max Verstappen and List of Formula One Grand Prix wins by Max Verstappen. As the driver with the 5th most wins of all time, above Ayrton Senna, well on the way to becoming an all-time great, I feel its only right that he gets a win list article of his own. There's already a detailed draft at Draft:List of Formula One Grand Prix wins by Max Verstappen. I understand that the creation of this article has been requested and denied multiple times in the past, but a lot has changed. A third consecutive championship is almost certain following a record-breaking 10-race win-streak, and he is rapidly approaching 50 wins. If agreed, I cannot do the split. - Split China University of Petroleum into China University of Petroleum (East China) and China University of Petroleum (Beijing). These two universities have became separate legal entities since 2005, with different constitutions and administrative boards. Contributors may seek for information on the corresponding Chinese Wikipedia page, with detailed information provided. If agreed, I {will} do the split. Cfls (talk) 23:17, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- Split Xbox Game Studios into Microsoft Gaming. Xbox Game Studios, ZeniMax Media, Activision, Blizzard Entertainment, and King all report to the Microsoft Gaming division that covers the company's ventures in video game development, publishing, and distribution. If agreed, I will do the split. One-Winged Devil (talk) 17:50, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
- (DISCUSS) SPLIT Isabel to Isabelle, consistent with how the other spelling variant Isobel is also a separate article, and Isabella (given name), and that Scottish Isobel and French Isabelle and Spanish Isabella can be separate from English Isabel. -- 65.92.247.90 (talk) 04:07, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
- Split Arena Football League into Arena Football League and Arena Football League (2024). The proposed 2024 relaunch of the Arena Football League has completely different leadership and management from the previous two incarnations of the AFL, with a different commissioner, hardly any original teams and personalities from the league on board, and completely different markets from what the original AFL would expand into (I doubt even in the original AFL's earliest days they would be willing to expand to Billings, Salina, Rapid City, Dodge City or Council Bluffs). As such, I believe the differences are distinct enough for the past league and the proposed future league to be separate articles, similar to how the various incarnations of the American Basketball Association and World Hockey Association are already treated. If agreed, I {will} do the split. Tom Danson (talk) 01:16, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Split Recognition of same-sex unions in Japan into Recognition of same-sex unions in Japan and Registered partnerships in Japan or Partnership oaths in Japan. Partnership oath registries are growing in number across Japanese municipal and prefectural governments since 2015 in lieu of the Japanese government recognizing same-sex couples. I've participated in updating the main article for years, but the section on partnership registries has grown increasingly complex with a growing list of governments and mutual recognition agreements, not to mention the list on LGBT rights in Japan of governments allowing for the naming of children and in-laws of partners as family members on several registries. In addition, quite a few also allow for common-law opposite-sex couples to join said registries. If agreed, I will do the split, but I understand if a split is not agreed to at this time. - Split Alexander Dennis Enviro500 MMC into Alexander Dennis Enviro500 MMC and Alexander Dennis Enviro500EV. The new battery electric Enviro500EV double-decker is a completely new vehicle lineup by Alexander Dennis compared to the pre-existing diesel Enviro500MMC, and it is now steadily picking up orders from Hong Kong bus operators. Seeing how the relaunched Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV and recently revealed Alexander Dennis Enviro100EV have their own articles, I think it would be appropriate for it to have its own page rather than be a footnote paragraph in a diesel bus article. If agreed, I cannot do the split - it seems there is something of a confusing overlap between the Hong Kong-market Enviro500EV and the North American-market Enviro500EV CHARGE, and differences between the two probably need working out Hullian111 (talk) 09:46, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

- Split John Ruthven, 3rd Earl of Gowrie into John Ruthven, 3rd Earl of Gowrie and Gowrie conspiracy (this link is not red because it is a redirect). There is enough material about John Ruthven to have his own article, and more than enough material about the Gowrie conspiracy for it to have it's own article. There are ample sources about the conspiracy itself (e.g., [1], [2] [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]). If agreed, I cannot do the split. Woofboy (talk) 10:37, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Split MTL (transport company) into MTL (transport company) and Merseybus. The article is excessively long despite attempts to 'rationalise', and there is enough material in some subsections to make a chronologically-ordered history of the Merseybus operation(s), a-la GM Buses. If agreed, I will do the split. Hullian111 (talk) 17:41, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- (DISCUSS) SPLIT Boeing 737 MAX groundings to 2024 Boeing 737 MAX groundings, the 2024 door plug MAX 9 groundings are fundamentally a different topic from the 2019-2023 MCAS groundings that caused two aircrashes -- 65.92.247.66 (talk) 06:50, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
- Split Rajasthani languages into Rajasthani languages and Rajasthani language or Standard Rajasthani. The article is about a group of languages with having sections like history, official status, writing system etc talking about a language called Rajasthani which is a standard veriety and recognised by the Government of the state and the academics and taught in schools and universities as a language subject, also there is a movement going on to make it the state language. There seems to be a lot of sources in Hindi language on the web. So I propose the split and move these sections to the new article, there are a lot of articles about a language group and a language with similar names like Gujarati language and Gujarati languages, Sindhi language and Sindhi languages, Somali language and Somali languages etc, If agreed, I {will} do the split. - (DISCUSS) SPLIT the K-Pop article into: K-Pop, K-Pop Dance, K-Pop Trainee System, K-Pop Fan Culture. The current main K-Pop article is too long. These topics warrant their own articles & I think in-depth analysis will be more productive in their own dedicated spaces. Their existing parts in the current K-Pop article would be reduced significantly and links to the dedicated pages would be made. This would simplify the K-Pop article whilst enabling greater documentatin of K-Pop culture on Wikipedia. If agreed, I will do this split. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Itzybella8 (talk • contribs) 01:54, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
- Split Pejorative into Prejorative and Slur. A pejorative and a slur are distinct concepts, though related. A pejorative is any term used to express contempt or disapproval, while a slur is a specific type of pejorative that targets social groups with discriminatory intent. Slurs often involve stereotyping, typically insulting individuals or groups based on factors like ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or cognitive ability. Although dictionaries like Oxford and Wiktionary recognize this distinction, it's important to acknowledge that the modern, collective understanding of these terms evolves, and not all resources like these may reflect current usage. It is imperative to furthermore consider, for example, how the term "slur" is commonly used to refer to specific terms such as the N-word, which is viewed not just as a simple "curse word" but as a discriminate with a history of racism -- a term that falls under the definition that I have presented. Other derogatory terms like the wikt:F-slur (note this euphemistic title, and how it differs from the "F-word") and the wikt:R-slur are akin to this due to their similar constitutions in society today. If agreed, I will do the split.

- Split Krupp into Krupp family and Friedrich Krupp AG. The current article, "Krupp", attempts to document the history of both the family and the business they created which is too broad and unwieldy a subject for a single article to handle. When faced with writing articles about business dynasties, editors have frequently made one devoted to the family business and one devoted to the family itself even when the family name is included in the company's title (i.e.:J.P. Morgan & Co. & the Morgan family; Lehman Brothers and the Lehman family; Barings Bank & the Baring family; Rothschild & Co & the Rothschild family; M. M. Warburg & Co. & the Warburg family; Mellon Financial & the Mellon family; etc.) With this approach in mind, I propose the article be split into (1) "Krupp family" which documents the family's genealogy while summarizing the lives of its individual members AND (2)"Friedrich Krupp AG" which provides history about the family business.Emiya1980 (talk) 22:58, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

- Split Ashley Gorley into Ashley Gorley and Tape Room Music. Although Ashley Gorley founded Tape Room Music, it is its entirely own company with 5 employees, a roster of 14 writers, and over 40 number ones. - Split Akan names into Akan names and List of Akan surnames. A very long, questionably-formatted table titled "Ethnic-Ashanti family names (surnames)" (which has been described as "all kinds of wrong" in the revision history) needs cleanup, but it would probably be more appropriate to rework into a list (e.g. Georgian name and List of Georgian surnames). - {DISCUSS) Split Thomas Massie into Thomas Massie and Political positions of Thomas Massie. The Political positions section has 15 subsections, and comprises 44.43% of the article. I believe the size of this section alone warrants a split; however, Massie's views and voting record also have a history of being unorthodox for a House Republican, which further warrants a separate article that can go into detail on his political positions. These are two separate entities with very different activities. The Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) is now dissolved since the end of 2023 whereas SportAccord continues to organize various annual events and has taken on some new activities - none of this is mentioned in the current article, nor is relevant to the context of the GAISF content. They've since released a new season 2 in 2021. Per the success of House of the Dragon, there is adequate information for seperate pages fo the main four characters. Drafts have been created for Rhaenyra and Alicent, pending edits. - Split Apple Watch into Apple Watch, Apple Watch (1st generation), Apple Watch Series 1, Apple Watch Series 2, Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch Series 7, Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE, and Apple Watch Ultra. The current article, in particular the comparison of models section, is too long. If agreed, I {cannot} do the split. See discussion at Talk:Apple Watch#Proposed split. - Split Steve Mac into Steve Mac production discography and Steve Mac. Mac has a large discography that should be split into a different article. If agreed, I cannot do the split. See discussion at Talk:Steve Mac#Proposed split. MyCatIsAChonk (talk) 12:23, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
- Split Carols by Candlelight into Carols by Candlelight (for the general tradition, and listing Carols by Candlelight events around the world); and Carols by Candlelight (Melbourne) (for the televised concert in Melbourne on Christmas Eve each year). I think the need for the split is obvious, but it might be contentious which one is the primary topic (details at the talk page). If agreed, I will eventually the split. See discussion at Talk:Carols by Candlelight#Proposed split. Adpete (talk) 04:14, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- Split Carlos Ghosn into Carlos Ghosn and Arrest and flight of Carlos Ghosn, to avoid his BLP placing such undue emphasis over only 4 years of his life. If agreed, I am willing to do the split. See discussion at Talk:Carlos_Ghosn#Length. DFlhb (talk) 02:33, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Split Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow into Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon Yellow. The games are totally different games. The pages were merged without appropriate clear consensus. Yellow has its own coverage and different mechanics different from Red and Blue. Red and Blue and Red and Green should not even be the same article, let alone Yellow. They are literally not even the same games. The games were hastily split inappropriately in the first place and shouldn’t have been merged. The games don’t even have the same graphics and plot line. This would be like merging Avatar 1 and Avatar 2 just because they are both Avatar. If agreed, I {cannot} do the split. See discussion at Talk: Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow#Proposed split of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow into Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon Yellow. Yeungkahchun (talk) 19:04, 17 December 2022 (UTC)
- Split Fushimi-no-miya into Fushimi-no-miya and Family tree of the extended Japanese line of succession. If agreed, I {cannot} do the split. I want to do a straightfoward split of the section Fushimi-no-miya#Family Tree into its own article. I'm not sure if it is worth splitting, but I think it deserves its own article alongside Family tree of Japanese deities and Family tree of Japanese monarchs. Probably needs a better name. - Split Directorio Revolucionario Estudiantil into Directorio Revolucionario Estudiantil and Directorio Revolucionario 13 de Marzo. They are two different movements, one was in the Cuban Revolution, one was made a year after it ended. I believe they both fought in the Escambray Revolution, but am not 100%. - Split Stagecoach in Hull into Stagecoach in Hull and Kingston upon Hull City Transport. History section of the Stagecoach article could potentially stand up in it's own article, but I'm concerned about leaving the Stagecoach article as a borderline stub. If agreed, I will do the split. Hullian111 (talk) 18:05, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- Split Karpeles Manuscript Library Museums into Karpeles Manuscript Library Museums and List of Karpeles Manuscript Library Museums. Since there are a lot of museum locations, I think it would make sense to have a list article containing both current and former locations. I want to make sure other editors agree with this idea though before doing it, and discussion on the talk page has not yet had any responses. If agreed, I will do the split. - SPLIT Already took place, but has been (half-way) reverted: Emmanuel_Macron (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) into Presidency of Emmanuel Macron (until recently a redirect and a disambiguation page). Rationale: Article is almost 300K long; it takes forever to load. The natural break where the split ocuured—his presidency—cut the articles in half (still huge, but better than before). I conducted the split, but the split at the source article (Emmanuel Macron) was reverted. The split at The Presidency of Emmanuel Macron was not reverted. This resulted in a 150K wp:Content Fork that the person who reverted is fighting to maintain. Please weigh in on this issue. I will re-do the split if it is decided to proceed, but am walking away from the discussion for now as I have limited Wiki-time. Let me know if you need me. - Split Oscar Ichazo into Oscar Ichazo and Arica School. Arica School is a redirect to the Oscar Ichazo article; the Arica School section takes up most of that article, with multiple subheadings and sub-subheadings, so it seems like it should be its own article. I already attempted to split it myself, but I struggled with the short footnote templates enough that the article probably wouldn't have been sufficiently sourced due to the links not working. If agreed, I cannot do the split, for that reason. Suntooooth, it/he (talk/contribs) 16:08, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

- Split Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! into Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (manga) and Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (TV series). Currently the article mainly focuses on the manga, although the TV series is also (significantly) notable. I have attempted long time ago to split, but someone objected. I still believe the TV series needs a separate article. If agreed, I will do the split with an improved version from the previous one. - Split DISCUSS HERE) the proposal to split Nut (food)-related content back out of Nut (fruit). The article currently has lots of content relating to culinary nuts such as coconuts and peanuts, which are not true nuts. - Split 2024 United States presidential debates into Joe Biden–Donald Trump 2024 presidential debate. Previous split/merge proposals had been considered in AfD, but was before Joe Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 election. The debate was the direct catalyst of Joe Biden's ultimate choice to step aside from the race, meeting WP:GNG, WP:EVENTCRIT, and WP:LASTING guidelines for a separate article. Current discussion is focusing on whether such a split would constitute WP:FORK. If agreed, I am willing to do the split. Current discussion can be found in Talk:2024 United States presidential debates#Splitting proposal for June 27th presidential debate. Baldemoto (talk) 18:03, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

The list is way too long and convoluted. The fact that it is sorted by award and not by series, while I feel it isn't necessarily wrong, is a bit hard to follow for such a large franchise. Each series has a wealth of sourced awards and nominations that would warrant standalone articles anyway, especially Degrassi: The Next Generation. If the consensus is against splitting Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High, their awards and nominations can also easily be reproduced in prose on their respective pages. If agreed, I cannot do the split. See discussion at Talk:List of awards and nominations received by the Degrassi franchise#Proposed split. ToQ100gou (talk) 04:43, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

- Split List of professional sportspeople convicted into crimes into List of professional sportspeople convicted of crimes and List of professional baseball players convicted of crimes. The baseball section is certainly large enough to make its own page (and I've got several more articles bookmarked so as to expand it) and this article is already above the size at which it should "almost certainly should be divided" per Wikipedia:SIZESPLIT. I'm sure several of these sections could be big enough to become their own standalone articles if given a bit more attention. This article about the possibly fictional twin rulers contains a handful of information about the church named in their honor. I propose that the section about the church should be split into two separate ones: one about the rulers (in this case, the original article without the section "Church of Abreha wa-Atsbeha") and a separate one focusing more on the church (the section "Church of Abreha wa-Atsbeha"). - Split Kinder House and Ewelme Cottage into Kinder House and Ewelme Cottage. If agreed, I {cannot} do the split. - Split 2023 Nigerian general election into 2023 Nigerian general election and 2023 Nigerian elections. I have long been against this page split; however, a proponent of the page split has continuously blocked a page move on account of the page not being split while simultaneously refusing to open a page split discussion. Thus I am opening this discussion to finally resolve the issue. If agreed, I may be available to do the split. See discussion at Talk:2023 Nigerian general election#Page split dispute, August 2022. - Split Destruction Derby into Destruction Derby and Destruction Derby 64. If agreed, I {cannot} do the split. See discussion at Talk:Destruction Derby#Proposed split. Sintlepond (talk) 16:35, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
- Done Destruction Derby 64 already existed, so it was just a matter of moving content to the right article. Felix QW (talk) 10:52, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- Split Credit union league into Credit union central and Credit union league. They're two different concepts as one is a payment clearing gateway and the other is a trade association. The "Canada" section needs to be moved to credit union central, leaving the US section in the existing article. If agreed, I cannot do the split. See discussion at Talk:Credit union league#Proposed split. 66.102.87.40 (talk) 18:12, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- Done Felix QW (talk) 10:30, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- Split Prehistoric Iberia#Paleolithic into Paleolithic Iberia, summarizing the original section. I have already created Draft:Paleolithic Iberia by copying the original section contents, improving and expanding them, and have also summarized Prehistoric Iberia#Paleolithic. If agreed, I will do the split. See discussion at Talk:Prehistoric Iberia#Splitting Paleolithic Iberia. Irecorsan (talk) 14:41, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

- Split Integrated Resource Plan into |Integrated Resource Plan (South Africa) and Integrated Resource Plan (energy planning). If agreed, I will do the split. See discussion at Talk:Integrated Resource Plan#Splitting proposal. Phosphoreux (talk) 19:41, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- I am writing the Integrated resource planning. Once it is reasonably complete, I will start a discussion (on the Talk:Integrated Resource Plan) about renaming of the article in question to reflect its subject. I would prefer that Integrated resource plan (with regular capitalization) will become a redirect. Викидим (talk) 03:10, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- Not done Nothing to split and more of a disambiguation issue now that the new page has been written from scratch. Felix QW (talk) 08:21, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

- Split Flag and coat of arms of Pennsylvania into Flag of Pennsylvania and Coat of arms of Pennsylvania. If agreed, I will do the split. Heraldic and vexillological history/significance differ. 21 other US states whose flags similarly feature their seal/COA currently split their pages in two, Pennsylvania is an outlier. See discussion at Talk:Flag and coat of arms of Pennsylvania#Proposed split. TheTaraStark (talk) 16:00, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
- Split Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete into Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (material) and 2023 United Kingdom reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete scandal. The article in question has grown from a stub about the material in question into being dominated by the recent political scandal regarding its historical use and lack of maintenance within the UK. As a result it feels like it's moving outside its original purpose of documenting the material and its basic factual properties and use to instead also containing current events of politically-charged information such as what a minister said or promised to do or didn't do etc. Therefore I believe it would be better that the content relating to the political scandal aspects be moved to a separate article. If agreed, I will attempt to do the split (haven't done one before but willing to try). Rambling Rambler (talk) 20:02, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- Done, though slightly changed from splitting to separating and renaming. Rambling Rambler (talk) 14:29, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
