WP 1.0 bot announcement
editThis message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:57, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Spider-Man articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
editVersion 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Spider-Man articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Proposal for merging the In Other Media sections of Symbiote related articles
editHello workgroup. I've recently been discussing with User:J Greb and User:Nightscream the possibility of merging the "In other media" sections of several symbiote related articles which currently suffer from a high degree of redundancy and overlap because they're in many cases talking about the same character (i.e. Venom). For instance Symbiote (comics) features media info from Venom (comics) which itself features info from Eddie Brock and Mac Gargan, and Symbiote also features appearances from Scream (comics), Carnage (comics) and Black Suit appearances. The 1994 animated series for example appears in 3 articles regurgitating a lot of the same plot details. This setup also allows users to add incorrect information on one page which does not appear on another or update info while it does not get updated elsewhere, or just recycles information. I am proposing potentially the creation of an article called Symbiote in other media (or a better suggestion) that would combine them all and allow us to better monitor and maintain this information and also allow us to better deal with the transient nature of symbiotes, where multiple people can be Venom/Toxin/Carnage/whoever and compensate when we don't know who the Venom host is, for instance in a video game where he may not speak. At the moment I have set up a sandbox at User:Darkwarriorblake/Symbiote in other media with a concept for the idea, which is obviously open to collaboration and input.
In addition to the above, JGreb has made a suggestion I thought was quite good, which is turning Venom (comics) into an index for Venom that would allow us to merge comic Venom, Alternative versions of Venom and Venom in other media]] into a single article (which I think could be easily designed to look good and be easily readable) while the content at Venom (comics) be moved to Venom symbiote sans the info that would instead be covered at Venom (comics).
While the current state is not a major problem, the information spread across potentially 6 articles in some cases makes it difficult to maintain (and if you know anything about databases you will know what I mean about redundancy), and I think the above would be a good idea for the long term and a way to neaten out and improve several articles at once. So I'd like some feedback/input if you please. Darkwarriorblake (talk) 00:05, 17 July 2012 (UTC) At current I have the following 3 sandboxes going:
- User:Darkwarriorblake/Venom (comics)
- User:Darkwarriorblake/Venom (comic book series)
- User:Darkwarriorblake/Symbiote in other media
Darkwarriorblake (talk) 19:57, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- This is going to cover a lot of territory since there are the 3 proposed articles, 18 existing articles, and 1 navbox. So please are with me if I do this in chunks.
- Foremost in this, we need to keep in mind WP:PLOT - splitting the article should not be done until there is at least a good attempt to trim down the amount of plot each contains. In general, comics articles seem to be have IOM and Alt Version sections split out simply to allow more plot to be added. Those of us that have been around a time should be working to curtail the in-depth plot summaries. The articles should not be long fictionographies of the characters.
- As for the specifics...
- Moving the current content of Venom (comics) so that a set index can be placed there would help. However, a set index with 23 sub headers is a problem. Ideally, given the topic,
- The lead should not refer only the parasite. It should point out the "Venom" is a name that is associated with the parasite and hosts from The Amazing Spider-Man #299 onward. It may get into the more nitty-gritty that the name was first taken up by Brock when the alien costume latched on to him and was latter associated with the parasite and followed to the later hosts.
- The character sections should be in publication order - yes, this means the "Others" each get a section with a header and they break-up the "mains"
- Was Spider-Man ever referred to as "Venom"?
- Images used in the set index should be limited, likely to none. The page is going to be used to shunt readers to other articles where fuller information is available, including the image to give the reader an idea what the character looks like. Having an image - and likely the same image - on the index page bucks NFC policy.
- Normal practice with comics articles is that non-primary universe uses of the character/name get placed under "Alternate versions" (stories in comics set in different realities or timelines) and "In other media". There is no reason to stay from that.
- Also, the only reason to give each version it's own sub-heading is if there is something major to be included. A single, one to three line paragraph of plot is not "major". For that matter, most plot summary isn't major. These sections can be collapsed into bulleted lists with each point starting with real world context.
- There is also the option to use {{Seealso}} to point to the AV and/or IOM sections of the character pages, which may eliminate the need for the lists on the index entirely.
- The current contents of Venom (comics) could land at Venom symbiote. The need there though would be:
- To collapse the fictionography. Literally, it can give a background on what the parasite is, give a succinct history of how it has been passed around, and not when/how itt has reproduced and what its offspring are.
- I'd be very tempted to move cleaned up versions of the sections on Ann Weying, Patricia Robertson, and Angelo Fortunato to List of minor Marvel Comics characters, just so 1) we get the creator, first appearance, and RWContext back, and 2) so that we can have a pointer to more full blown articles off Wiki that cover what we won't due to PLOT.
- The IOM section could - and likely should - point to the IOM section of Eddie Brock, Even if it is along the lines of "The symbiote has been adapted for multiple media outside of comics. Most of the adaptation are based on the symbiote using Eddie Brock as a host and a number follow the plot progression of it using first Peter Parker and then Brock after Parker rejects it. Exceptions to this are (short list of non-Brock adaptations)." It's also worth noting that, unless it's citable, it's damn hard to tell if an alt skin for Spider-Man in a game is the parasite or the replica fabric costume.
- And plot-only Alternative versions of Venom could likely have a plot trim, get placed into publication order, split between Brock and the parasite, and absorbed back into the parent articles.
- Moving the current content of Venom (comics) so that a set index can be placed there would help. However, a set index with 23 sub headers is a problem. Ideally, given the topic,

- I only did the mockup of Venom (comics) because i thought you wanted IOM and AV merged into one with it. Darkwarriorblake (talk) 15:33, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
- It is exceedingly difficult a case for this character since Brock is Venom but he no longer is Venom, and Venom is also the symbiote, and Venom is also the name of other people. So you can merge definite Brock/Venom into Brock, or keep everything in one place at Venom and point from Brock's article to Venom, but that is just ONE of the Venom's. And FYI Patricia Robertston as far as I am aware never actually wore Venom, she wore a clone. Realistically she should probably come under alternate versions of Venom or "Other Venoms" or something. It is only a mock up so I didn't move her but she doesn't really belong. Darkwarriorblake (talk) 22:57, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

- I am up for any changes that are for the better of the reader I am definitely willing to see how it turns out in the sandbox. Though looking at Symbiotes in other media is a Joker in other media sandbox for the time being. Jhenderson 777 14:34, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Hello! I've just recently wrote a page on Wikipedia called "Alien Costume Saga". It's the comic book story about when Spider-Man came back to Earth from Battleworld with the alien costume where he discovers the new suit is a symbiote. I was wondering if you can help me write "Alien Costume Saga" page and make it more interesting because this is one of the most popular Spider-Man storylines of the '80s. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
editHello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
