Etymology 1

edit

From Mandarin (Luán).

Proper noun

edit

Luan

  1. A surname from Mandarin.
    • 2010 April 9, Loa Iok-sin, “Jiang backs betel ‘justice’”, in Taipei Times[1], →ISSN, →OCLC, archived from the original on 16 April 2010, Taiwan News, page 2‎[2]:
Luan Cheng (欒丞), an officer from the Jhonghe Second Police Precinct, on Tuesday approached 19-year-old Yen Ju-yi (顏如憶) who was selling betel nuts at a small shop in Jhonghe City (中和), Taipei County, and told her she was showing too much skin and may have violated the law. []
While Yen has accused Luan of causing bodily harm, Luan said that Yen prevented an officer of the law from exercising his duties and slandered him.

Etymology 2

edit

Proper noun

edit

Luan

  1. Alternative form of Lu'an
    • 2014 October 9, Wu Nan, “Drink-driving bungle; Fake goods up in flames; Ex-official denies gambling”, in South China Morning Post[3], →ISSN, →OCLC, archived from the original on 12 October 2014, China Insider‎[4]:
A man has been arrested in Huoshan county near Luan for drink-driving after he rang up the police by mistake and then challenged an officer to a fight, []
Usage notes
edit

Luan can be considered a misspelling of Lu'an. In theory, a syllable-dividing mark (隔音符號隔音符号 (géyīn fúhào)) should be added before a non-initial syllable beginning with a, o, or e. Hence, Luan could only ever refer to a word made up of the single syllable luan (see Etymology 1 above, where the single syllable Luan is a surname) since a word made up of lu and an would be spelled as Lu'an (cf. Lu'an). In practice, syllable-dividing marks are often added or omitted at will.
