Crucifixion title?
[edit]I sort of strolled in through here via the featured article. As a casual observer, I'm confused by the image caption for the Crucifixion painting, which reads: "Crucifixion (a scene rarely set on the banks of a large river) by Altdorfer, c. 1520." I feel like the parenthetical phrase is part of the artwork's title, although clicking through to the file description shows the title as Kreuzigung, Szene: Christus am Kreuz mit Maria und Johannes. –Kerαunoςcopia◁galaxies 03:21, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- I've adjusted it, but pictures this old did not have "titles" in the modern way. Johnbod (talk) 05:01, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- I never took Art History (my loss, I know!), so I wasn't aware of the titling situation. I don't think the changes helped clarify anything, though. I think expounding should take place in the article body; new ideas shouldn't be presented within captions (which should just state, e.g., the title (or pseudo-title?) of a piece or description of a work). The parenthetical phrase referring to the "large river" would be more appropriate in an article or section (or couple of sentences) dedicated to that painting. Just a thought. –Kerαunoςcopia◁galaxies 05:12, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- Well the subject is now in italics. I don't agree about captions in general. Here the picture is not otherwise mentioned in the text; if it were it could be done there. Johnbod (talk) 05:18, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

- Exactly. Perhaps as the article is expanded. –Kerαunoςcopia◁galaxies 05:20, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Introduction
[edit]Sorry, I changed the introduction for two reasons: Albrecht Altdorfer was both an artist AND an architect of the Renaissance - and as such municipial master mason of Regensburg. And he could not have been a founder of the Danube School, as the expression was coined as late as in the 19th century. A school in the strict sense is by no means detectable. The name more likely refers to a cultural area centred around painters of Southern Bavaria and Austria. --Ratisbon (talk) 16:19, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
