Details on social aspects?
[edit]Apparently the social networking aspect of Boxee is one of its primary distinguishing features, yet aside from a mention in the opening paragraph, there's no details about it at all in the article! Pimlottc (talk) 01:10, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
- That is corrent, feel free to add a "Social Networking in Boxee" section to the article. Gamester17 (talk) 16:24, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
I second more information on the social networking... thanks!
[edit]This definitely seems better than TVHardDrive.com since it has social networking, but I want to hear more about it. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.119.215.193 (talk) 19:14, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Free/Open Source? Doesn't seem like it
[edit]It sounds like a substantial portion of what makes Boxee Boxee is not Free/Open Source. Given that, I think it's misleading to call this FOSS at all. "Based on FOSS" would be fair.
Also, the sentence "Since these source code libraries are released under free and open source licenses they are legally redistributable." is not logically accurate; FOSS works on the basis of copyright law alone (except GPLv3 and similar, but that's irrelevant here), and trademark and patent law could make a piece of FOSS not legally redistributable. That's why no major Linux distros ship patent-encumbered media codecs without a patent license agreement. GabrielBurt (talk) 01:43, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, Boxee as a whole is NOT Open Source. One of the main libraries that differentiates Boxee from XBMC (the Open Source project upon which Boxee is based) is libBoxee.a, which is not open sourced. [1]. There are also questions about the license agreements required being in violation of the GPL [2] [3] (Full disclosure: the 2nd link is a story covering my blog on the subject).
Saying it is "based on FOSS" is fine, though. I'll make the edit. Ushimitsudoki (talk) 14:26, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
As of 2009 May 1, the Boxee source distribution '0.9.11.5777' contains -lBoxee as source code, which builds (after a minor change or two) on AMD64. One presumes this source code is under the GPL. 218.185.10.132 (talk) 05:00, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
Boxee is only slightly more open source than MS —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.106.90.22 (talk) 01:58, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
the error reporting software
[edit]Does anyone remember the name of the error reporting software that comes with Boxee? It would be great to include more information about that, if anyone knows more about it. Thanks Kushal (talk) 19:30, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
What about hardware requirements?
[edit]How much iron is it gonna take to run this? Does the P2P aspect mean viewers must give in order to get? Will netbook owners be able to use this or is strictly for the quad core crowd?
- yes, and what type of internet connection does it require?--TyrS (talk) 06:08, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
Boxee now supports video card offloading for HD

Boxee Payment option coming
[edit]Someone, who is good at editing, should add that Boxee will try a payment option in the summer of 2010. http://blog.boxee.tv/2010/01/20/coming-soon-boxee-payments/
According the website it says that "Users want to see more content on Boxee. Content owners want to be paid for what they produce (whether that’s TV Shows, movies, music, or applications). We don’t believe these are conflicting interests. This is why we plan to release a Payment Platform this summer where users will be able to make purchases with one click on the remote." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brettfan (talk • contribs) 17:40, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Boxee TV to replace Boxee Box but the new device will be very difference
[edit]Boxee will this fall release a new device called "Boxee TV" cooperation with D-Link, and they still stop releasing updates for their old Boxee Box (which was also made by D-Link), see the post on Boxee's blog; "we are also working to release a separate update to the Boxee Box to update the Flash player and fix some key bugs. After this update the Boxee Box will go into maintenance mode. We will discontinue its distribution and will not be releasing any additional major updates."[4]. In fact not much in this new device will be the same as a the old, as both the hardware and the software have been completely replaced with something else, even though the user interface will look similar. It will be ARM CPU based and use all new proprietary software, so none od the old addons/apps/plugins will work with the new box without being rewritten. And while the old box was aimed at people downloading stuff themselves so it supportaed all kinds of formats, the new box will only support the most common and popular formats, and be aimed at people watching mostly broadcast TV, and some online streams.[5][6]164.4.17.33 (talk) 11:55, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- Update from Boxee's public relations manager Andrew Kippen on their Facebook page; "Boxee TV does support file playback; it won't do artwork and identification like the Boxee Box does, but can playback most popular file types."[7] 164.4.17.33 (talk) 08:51, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
- Comment from XBMC Community Manager Nathan Betzen on his blog; "With a Boxee TV, the only recording option of the user is to convert the video file to Boxee’s preferred format, encrypt the file, and then send the file to Boxee’s cloud service. There’s no local storage. There’s no sending the file to an alternative cloud storage. And there’s no accessing that file using software that doesn’t meet Boxee’s standard. The only right users had with broadcast TV, the ability to do with it as they pleased, Boxee is working to remove. I think all of that is disappointing, disheartening, and lacking in a certain degree of morality. I don’t find it at all funny. I do not guffaw in merriment at the incredible way in which Boxee appears to have turned its back on all the people who have supported it for the past several years."[8] 138.103.17.18 (talk) 14:21, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Boxee TV will no longer support open source software, say hello to Tivoization!
[edit]Boxee's new "Boxee TV" device will no longer be based on XBMC, say hello to Tivoization and bad support for downloaded videos, read "XBMC and open source are gone now, replaced by a proprietary OS that’s built to support end-to-end content encryption and a policy compromise Avner describes as “very reasonable.” And Boxee’s deemphasized its famously comprehensive support for weird video files as well — weird video files that generally come from torrent sites. “We didn’t call it Boxee Box 2,” says Avner. “We called it Boxee TV.”"[9][10]164.4.17.33 (talk) 11:55, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- Update from Boxee's public relations manager Andrew Kippen on their Facebook page; "Boxee We plan to upgrade to a Flash 11 player as well as fix the shutdown issue. While we really wanted to make the Boxee Box open to hacking like you're asking for, it's not possible given agreements with premium content providers who require the box to be locked down to distribute their content on it."[11] 164.4.17.33 (talk) 08:51, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
