Where is the Flag of Bangladesh. In the whole of Wikipedia there isn't a single flag of Bangladesh. It looks like all the Flags of Bangladesh just disappeared.
Proposed merger with list of unrecognized and partially recognized state flags
In the wikipedia entry "List of countries", all states are shown in the same list (although with a different font). Why does this page and the related page follow a different convention?
I propose merging the two pages. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 155.188.183.7 (talk • contribs) 13:43, 8 April 2008
Belgium
The official flag of Belgium has the unusual proportions of 13:15. The proportions of 2:3 are only for common use. I would then suggest to adapt the flag in this list to use the official proportions instead of the common used proportions as seen now.
-
National flag of Belgium, official proportions 13:15
-
civil ensign and only commonly used as National flag of Belgium, proportions 2:3
Cook Islands
Why are the Cook Islands in the "Other states" section when most other dependent states (ex: Isle of Man, Greenland)aren't included in this section. Oughtn't this section be limited purely to states that claim absolute sovereignty that are unrecognized by other nations? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MikeWigg (talk • contribs) 19:44, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- Both the Cook Islands and Niue have moved beyond the status of "dependant territory". Both states have asserted their independence, and (unlike dependent territories) they have begun entering into diplomatic relations with other nations, independently of their former protecting state (New Zealand). However, they have also remained in free association with New Zealand. They operate independently at the United Nations in terms of membership of Specialized agencies of the United Nations, whilst not currently seeking full independent membership of the UN. The consensus is that they ARE sovereign states. You can read the extensive discussion, and observe the consensus reached, in the talk page archives at List of sovereign states. Bolivia and Peru
Flags of Bolivia, Peru, Costa Rica and Venezuela are presented with the emblems on the website of the United Nations
— Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.57.185.74 (talk) 21 July 2013
- Several countries, including these, have two types of flags: a "state" flag which includes their coat of arms for use by the government, and a "civil" flag without coat of arms, used by civilians. For some of these the state flag is usually used as the national flag (e.g. Spain, Dominican Republic, Guatemala), while for some other countries the civil flag is generally used (e.g. Germany, Poland, Austria).
- For these four countries, it's less clear which flag is "the" national flag, as both versions are in general use. I personally use the civil flags for Bolivia and Peru and the state flags for Venezuela and Costa Rica, but I don't know if any of these flags are officially specified as the national flags of these countries (nor if there is a consensus on which flags to use on Wikipedia). Nonsense that is the flag of the Republic of China. Taiwan is the vast majority of the ROC but it does also include Islands from Fujian Province. It is like calling the Union Jack the flag of England
Unrecognized states - Republika Srpska
Regarding the edits made by Dabibiohajdajdobarblajv, re-reverted by Murry1975:
- Only one of the states listed in the "Other states" section renamed "Other unrecognized states" is actually unrecognized (namely, Somaliland). All states in the section are not universally recognized, but only one is not recognized by any state.
- Republika Srpska is one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina and as such isn't a sovereign state, despite the word "Republic" in its name. Unlike for example the Republic of Kosovo, it hasn't declared independence either.
As for the mention of WP:BRD: according to this guideline, the side which should have started a discussion on the talk page is the one that originally made the edit in question (by adding the word "unrecognized" and the flag of Srpska), not the one that reverted it. I'm not sure why TU-nor's revert would violate WP:OTHERSTUFF, which is an essay applying only in deletion discussions. SiBr4 ("CyberFour") (talk) 20:24, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- So how do we improve this section? Unreconised or partially recognised, or as previously "States with limited or no recognition".
- The fact that the previous es was "Unrecognized does not fit all entries. Srpska is not relevant here (then we would have to include scores of others", so do we include others or not? All or none? SiBr4 has brought up an interesting point. Murry1975 (talk) 20:35, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- IMO the current section name "Other states" is clear enough in contrast to the "UN member/observer states" section. "Other unrecognized states", other than being factually incorrect because not all listed states are unrecognized, implies that some unrecognized states are mentioned earlier. I wouldn't object to "partially recognized" or "limited recognition", though there are several UN members/observers that are not recognized by all other states (Armenia, China and Palestine for example).
- I think the part "then we would have to include scores of others" in TU-nor's edit summary was meant as a WP:POINTy comment: "Srpska is not a sovereign state, so if it is going to be included, other non-sovereign entities should be included too". The title of the article is "Gallery of sovereign state flags", so clearly only entities that are (or claim to be) sovereign states should be listed. Tidy up
In the introduction to the article and also in a note at the top of this talk page it is stated that this gallery shall be seen in connection with the list of sovereign states. I have checked the flags against the list and will try to tidy up a bit.
- East Timor is placed under E in the list, so I'll move the flag from T to E.
- The item "Flag of Timor-Leste" does not say why it is under E in the list. Could the name be changed to "Flag of East Timor - Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste", or similar, from the list of sovereign states? --68.231.46.173 (talk) 20:07, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- In the gallery the country is called Myanmar. I'll move it to Burma (as in the list), which is also the name of the target article.
- The Kosovo note seems at first to be a good idea. Two reasons to remove it: 1) It does not fit well into the gallery template, so that the (a) is placed before the Abkhasia flag, which makes no sense. If anyone wants to add notes to any other flag in the "Other states" section, all the note markers will clog up at the top of the section, making even less sense. 2) The gallery is closely connected to the list, where all the "Other states" are commented on in detail, explaining why they are in this part of the list and not in the main part above.
- One thing for discussion: Both the list and the gallery uses "Côte d'Ivoire", while the target article is called "Ivory Coast". I think that is the only case where the name in the list/gallery is different from the article names. Is there a good reason for this?
Regards! --T*U (talk) 15:22, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
- Good changes. The use of Cote d'Ivoire should probably be changed to match the article title, as that's where current consensus lies. CMD (talk) 15:28, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Kosovo is not a sovereign STATE.Never was and never will be.Remove it from a list.Otherwise you would have add Rep.Srpska, Rep.Texas, Novorosija...and more. Don't abuse Wikipedia. 89.110.240.157 (talk) 21:51, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
Not done Kosovo is a member of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and numerous other institutions - Within the European Union, 23 of 28 members have recognised the Republic, which is far more than any of the other states in that section of the gallery, except Taiwan. - Arjayay (talk) 11:59, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Stop writing nonsense. These organizations are in the range of Pet lovers or Nudist movement when we talking of inependence. IMF, WB , EB can not declare inependence of any region. Membership in these organizations does not mean anything. Only UN can do it. Otherwise why we need UN. KOSOVO IS NOT SOVERIEGN STATE.Never was and never will be.Remove it from a list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.208.210.236 (talk) 20:32, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- As noted at the top of this talk page, the article includes all countries listed at List of sovereign states, and discussion on which countries to include should be held at that article's talk page. Unlike Kosovo, neither Republika Srpska nor Texas has declared independence, has de facto sovereign control of territory or is recognized by over half of the world's countries (the Republic of Texas is a historical country). Novorossiya (or Donetsk and Luhansk separately, not entirely clear to me) does claim independence, but according to several other discussions (mainly at Talk:List of states with limited recognition) it meets neither of the two inclusion criteria while Kosovo meets both, so they're not really comparable. SiBr4 (talk) 22:26, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
First carefully read article List of sovereign states before you write something. "The article includes all countries listed at List of sovereign states", you wrote. Thats wrong! Kosovo is listed under OTHER STATES, NOT SOVEREIGN. Kosovo is on the List of states with limited recognition. This leads to the conclusion that flag of Kosovo does not belong to this article Gallery of sovereign state flags. You can create a new article Gallery of limited recognition regions flags, to not mislead readers of wikipedia. Kosovo is not a sovereign STATE. Never was and never will be. Remove it from a list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.110.242.120 (talk) 19:58, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
- If the Republic of Kosovo wasn't considered a sovereign state, it wouldn't be in List of sovereign states at all. The term "Other states" is used as opposed to "UN members and observers" both here and at List of sovereign states. These other states are all de facto sovereign states despite not being UN member states. If you still don't understand, please start a section at Talk:List of sovereign states per the note at the top of this page (people there are probably better at explaining). - I have the same question, but for Kosovo...hell, the ROC and Kosovan governments control more territory than the Palestinian Authority. --CASportsFan (talk) 02:28, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
- Both the article lead and the warning on this talk page state that the article must be consistent with List of sovereign states, and that discussion on which states are included should be held there. In that article, Palestine is in the main group because it is a UN observer state, while Kosovo, the ROC and others have no direct affiliation with the UN. SiBr4 (talk) 14:20, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Why is the flag of Iraqi Kurdistan included in this article?
- It is clear from this article itself (first sentence), and from discussion sections above, that decisions about what claimed-to-be states should be or should not be included are to be made at Talk:List of sovereign states. As of 18:26, 20 November 2017 (UTC), I do not see either Catalonia or Iraqi Kurdistan listed at List of sovereign states, so their flags should not be on this page. Anyone who wishes to do so may safely remove the Kurdistan entry from this article (Gallery of sovereign state flags). inconsistent graphical display
Due to the deletion of Template:Flag entry and its replacement by standard galleries with the height attribute set to 100, this page is inconsistent in its display of flags. When multiple flags are displayed next to each other, they should all be of the same height (the distance between the top and bottom of the flag), regardless of the length or proportions of the flag. Setting the height attribute to 100 is an attempt to do this, but it does not work for many flags whose official dimensions specify their length should be significantly longer than their height. For example, Armenia, Australia, and Azerbaijan -- 3 of the 11 flags in the A section alone. This inconsistency presents the unfortunate connotation that these flags are somehow less important than the rest of the flags on the page. Short of restoring the use to specialized templates that acknowledge that the display of flags is different than the display of general images, I don't know what can be done about this, but as it stands, this page is graphically quite messy.

The current change by a POV editor to established consensus to group flags of member and observer states together (a practice even adopted by the UN itself in 2015) is completely xenophobic and unnacceptable. Not only this, but while all POV edits should be reverted (including arab and/or palestinian ones), this edit in particular contradicts a non POV objective fact and established consensus here on wikipedia that one bias editor should not be allowed to change without discussion or consensus. Yes I am aware that palestine is not a realistically sovereign state, but the objective truth remains that it like the vatican city is a UN observer and as of 2015, UN observer states are allowed to raise their flags in new york and geneva. These actions by him or her contractict severely the NPOV required on this platform and i reiterate once again, conflicts with objective truth. Despite the article being restricted, I strongly urge a deep review of his/her edit and to return it to the original (and current) consensus 138.51.174.61 (talk) 14:27, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

Correct national flags of Costa Rica, Venezuela and Bolivia
I have been wondering if the state or civil flags are the correct national flags of Bolivia, Venezuela and Costa Rica. The Pages for the countries and their flags show the state flags as national flags, but the state ones have an extra caption in their images, and the “Gallery of Sovereign State Flags” page and all other pages they are featured on show the civil ones, as did the “National Flags” page before I changed them to state ones. Other than that, the emoji flags for Costa Rica and Venezuela show the civil one (🇨🇷) (🇻🇪), and the one for Bolivia shows the state one (🇧🇴). Flag of Afghanistan
In light of recent events, many articles have to be updated in rapid pace, though here I'm finding here some contention in regards of the flag of Afghanistan. In the article, the section title clearly states that the following flags shown on the gallery are those of United Nations member states and observers. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is not a member and is expected to have little recognition, while the exiled Islamic Republic still remains the country's representation in the UN. I reckon both flags should be used here much in the same way as in the main article for Afghanistan as while the IRA is UN-recognized, the IEA is the de facto government, but what does here think? Afghanistan has had more flag changes than any other country but this one is a bit more complicated, to say the least. JohnDotto (talk) 16:14, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
- All these changes have been made without sources. We need sources for the Taliban establishing their flag as the state flag, and sources for recognition or non-recognition of their government at whatever point they declare it. When that happens, we should stick to the flag as used by the government, absent compelling sources otherwise. CMD (talk) 16:24, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
- Given this source I think it's safe to use the IEA flag as the flag of Afghanistan. Note that there has not to my knowledge been, and to my knowledge will never be, an official announcement of a flag change, as the Taliban have consistently viewed the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan as the legitimate government of the country, and they have simply raised its flag, sometimes with minor variations such as the name of the country in Pashto or Persian below, wherever they control. WittyWidi (talk) 01:13, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- Don't need an announcement of a change, just a note on official status. They'll produce country information packets I'm sure. Given they have nominated an UN ambassador, perhaps they already have somewhere and we've just missed it. CMD (talk) 04:15, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Query about renaming the Article
This article is a list like a lot of other articles, so it feels natural for the average person to search something like "List of country flags". Even when I type in "Gallery of sovereign state flags", I have to scroll to the bottom of the page to get this article, but when I type "List of country flags" I have this article featured on the right-hand side of the page.
While I personally have sorted this problem out by bookmarking this article, Internet users who are going to come like once to this article may have a hard time finding this article as they might search something like "List of country flags" and are fairly not going to click on "Gallery of Sovereign state flags". I believe we should change the title of the article to something like "List of country flags", as that is something on the lines of what people will expect the title to be, as to avoid confusion.
What are your thoughts on this matter? Flag Mechanic (talk) 17:34, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- Just be aware that if you use the word "country" then the list will need to include England, Scotland, etc. There will be a debate about the definition of "country". There is also the problem that when the word "country" is used as an adjective, it often means "outside of the city". Can we fly a "country flag" at our "country retreat"?
- I think that "national" is a better word than "country"... but if we use the name "List of national flags" or "Gallery of national flags" then the list should probably contain all the same flags found in List of aspect ratios of national flags. MapGrid (talk) 22:04, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
From your explanation, the best alternative is "List of sovereign state flags" Flag Mechanic (talk) 22:38, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Move both North and South Korea to K
North and South Korea aren’t officially referred to as North and South, even the UN places them in K. 2601:843:C200:6AC0:3D55:1D51:93C4:3384 (talk) 02:52, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

The Austrian and Polish flags listed here are both outdated Åñøñÿmøüß (talk) 18:28, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

State flags?
I've noticed a number of national flags have been swapped from their regular form to the state flag, namely Austria, Finland, Germany, Poland, and Tuvalu. I think someone misunderstood the article title as [sovereign] [state flags] instead of [sovereign state] [flags]. The civil flags are pretty much universally used as the national flag for these countries, with the state flags having a much more limited use. I won't undo the edits just in case I'm wrong here and this is supposed to be state flags specifically, but in the ten years I've been frequenting this page I've never seen any of these countries represented with anything other than the regular old civil flags. Crazy Boris (talk) 04:45, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
- What would make the sense is just to use the file for File:Flag of [country].svg so when the civil and state flags are pretty much equally as common (like Bolivia, Costa Rica, Peru, and Venezuela) its clear which to use
- alternatively mark one as a civil flag and the other as a state flag if both are pretty much equally used (basically just the 4 mentioned above) Fakenoodle (talk) 05:06, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

change state flag of Peru to civil flag of Peru and change flag of Taliban to flag of Afghanistan (2013-2021) MineRazorsSCP (talk) 15:25, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
Re Peru: Not done: The title of the article states that it focuses on state flags, not civil flags.
Re Afghanistan: Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. As far as I'm aware, the current Taliban government uses the white Shahadah flag for official use. Please provide sources and reopen if I'm wrong. Uberlyuber (talk) 20:12, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
Changes by Mouyong65
@Mouyong65: Please self-revert or I will report you to the edit-warring noticeboard. You have now restored the same edit dozens of times, introducing a spelling error, changing out national flags for state ones, and getting rid of the "other states" section. You are also not using edit summaries to explain you mass-reverts of other editors. Consensus is to follow the format at list of sovereign states, and a new consensus here will be needed to change it. Pinging previous reverters: GoneDoge!, Jwkozak91, SomeoneFromPL, E02162, Shebejeyebeb, VexilloYT, Wallification, and Woodlot. ― Tartan357 Talk 03:29, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
- I agree with the consensus that the list of sovereign states formatting should be followed. I'm just a bit miffed since this person reverted the Austrian flag back to the improper state one when I tried correcting it. — E02162 (Leave a message!) 05:23, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
- @E02162: They reverted 8 other users over the same change, so I wouldn't take it personally. I would suggest reverting them now that they've been well-warned (I'm at my 3 revert limit), and if they revert I will take them to WP:AN3. It seems clear they're not going to engage in discussion. ― Tartan357 Talk 05:30, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

Palestine is not a country.
Palestine is not a country. It's a territory. Taiwan is a seperate country though.103.246.36.1 (talk) 04:38, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Palestine is considered a country by majority of the countries of the world, has same status as the Vatican City by having UN Observer Status (something even Taiwan does not enjoy), and controls territory (has sovereignty over some of its land). So it is pretty much a country. ([[User talk:talk) 07:37, 04 May 2022 (UTC)
State vs Civil Flags
I'm seeing that the flags have been changed between state flags and civil flags on this article. Since State flags are the flags with coat of arms on it, and civil flags are the ones without coat of arms, should a separate Wikipedia article be created for civil flags, so this page can have state flags only. - 193 UN members
- 2 UN observers
- 11 other states

Cook Islands & Niue?
They're listed on the "List of sovereign states" page as non-UN-participating states, but their flags aren't here. Are they not considered sovereign? Even if so, shouldn't that be addressed on the list page, not here? 2601:400:C180:3F40:0:0:0:F802 (talk) 16:08, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- I looked at the List of Sovereign States page and the relevant talk page discussions about the Cooks and Niue, and have added them here, coming to the same conclusion that was reached there. Crazy Boris (talk) 01:04, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

Should Costa Rica have a coat of arms on their flag?
I have seen the flag of Costa Rica with the coat of arms many times. Should it have the coat of arms or should it be left off? OMGShay 92 (talk) 08:33, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- Seconding this and extending it to Peru, Bolivia, and Venezuela as well. The civil flags without the emblems are official and used, but the state flags seem to be much more common in use as a de facto all-around national flag Crazy Boris (talk) 00:11, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
- It looks like the flags of Bolivia, Costa Rica, and Peru have been changed to add the coat of arms, but not Venezuela; should the flag with the coat of arms also be used for Venezuela? Cloudcounter (talk) 18:51, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
Links to galleries at Commons
I have removed the table with 'See also'-links to 'Sovereign state flags in [year]' galleries at Commons. The reason is that these galleries have gotten completely out of hand. In the last couple of months, they have been expanded and filled up with unsourced 'Other entities', 'Other cultural', 'Sovereign U.S. states' (sic!) etc. to the point of being made completely valueless for an encyclopedia.
