This article is a duplicate of the already existing Lahaina Banyan Court Park. It looks like the user recently visited the tree and created an article on it without realizing that we already have an article on the tree. It also looks like wording and text was copied from that article to create this one. Essentially, this is a duplicate fork. Viriditas (talk) 06:01, 19 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Western Maui fire

[edit]

Tree was engulfed by the Western Maui fires in Lahaina sometime between August 8-9, more likely on August 8. Visual confirmation was just posted by recovery teams flying above the property in a heli. I’m not an arborist so I don’t know if the tree can be saved. The Lahaina Restoration Foundation has not yet posted an official comment, but the general consensus from the air is not good. Update: Opinions differ, but people are optimistic that the tree can be saved. No arborists will be able to examine the tree for several days since the area is a disaster zone with the Coast Guard setting up a perimeter due to boats that are still on fire at this time loaded with fuel, posing a further hazard of a potential explosion near the park. Update: moments ago, Maui Now of the Pacific Media Group is reporting that the tree is destroyed, but this is not an official opinion from an arborist. In the context of the original article, the area and property was destroyed, not necessarily the tree, which is still standing and may recover. Just posting this here to head off anyone saying that the tree is dead. Still no official confirmation that is true, just preliminary secondhand reports. Here's an encouraging update from KITV: an arborist reported that the majority of the tree seems to be coming back to life, but about 15-20 percent of the tree is too badly damaged and will likely have to be removed. Aoi (青い) (talk) 07:03, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the update. I wonder if this might be a good thing. Even before the fire, you could tell that the tree was not doing so great. The last time I saw it truly healthy and vibrant was more than a decade ago. Cutting back plants, even trees, tends to help encourage new growth. I wonder if that will work here. I'm definitely not a plant expert, but I have also heard (or maybe read?) that strategic cutting can help. I really do hope that will help here.
Either way, I'm glad the Banyan tree, as well as Lahaina's ulu trees, are receiving the attention they are getting from both arborists and the public. I hope the trees return to the vibrancy for which they were once known. Aoi (青い) (talk) 07:38, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Update: 2023-08-12 23:23 Hawaii's governor expressed hope in a tweet that that the tree can be saved. https://twitter.com/GovJoshGreenMD/status/1690609956129824768 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:648:8900:3FBA:1D6D:32C1:74B0:DB7F (talk)
