Geocoding

[edit]

Just a question on location. If I think of a mill I know Meopham I would need a field fot this and a field for latitude and longitude. UK mills are often referred to by a UKgrid reference- and many have a postcode. ClemRutter (talk) 09:07, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just use {{oscoor}}<br>{{coord}} to put both into infobox. I don't see any need to put in a postcode. Mjroots (talk) 05:59, 16 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have forgotton what tie issue was, but a ran a test. The results show test location Knights Place at TQ 70169 68998 using oscoor.
::

51°23′40″N 0°26′41″E / 51.3945°N 0.4446°E / 51.3945; 0.4446. Which shows that the Helmert conversion has been accurately done so that is no longer an issue.

{{oscoor}} however doesn't display either the grid or the WGS coordinate used by GPS.
It carries the warning
This is an experimental facility. By all means use it, but to avoid problems when things change:
   * definitely do not create any links to the external URL which this template calls
   * do not use this template directly in any article
   * instead use one of the templates which use this one. Or create a new template.
{{coord}} displays in one of two places etc. However I still prefer the to use the raw data in the Infobox
| location =
|location_town= Belper, Derbyshire
|location_country= UK
|altitude=
|map_type=Derbyshire
|latitude=53.0282
|longitude=-1.4869
| serving_canal =
| serving_railway =
| serving_river = River Derwent, Derbyshire
Which you can see in action at Belper North Mill which uses Template:Infobox Mill building. Just a thought.

  • I have just removed the "experimental" from the {{oscoor}} documentation. Now if you see 51°23′40″N 0°26′41″E / 51.3945°N 0.4446°E / 51.3945; 0.4446 returning a grid reference of TQ 70050 69053 that is wrong - the Helmert transform has not been applied. Streetmap says that those lat/long figures correspond to a grid ref of TQ 70169 68998 and I trust Streetmap. I have now fixed the routine that oscoor calls but not installed the mod because I want to move it to the toolserver at the same time. I could install it today but at least coord and oscoor agree with each other if I leave things unchanged. Keep checking the oscoor and coord links above to see things change. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 02:42, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Separate parameters for coords

[edit]

I have recently developed a tool which helps with this edit: {{oscoor|TQ518027|TQ 518 027}} → {{gbmappingsmall|TQ 518 027}} - example. But when I introduced it at template talk:oscoor, I was deluged with an even more radical suggestion: allow the users to enter raw co-ordinates. I tried it for grid references using the nearest windmill to my house - see this edit - and of course it works very nicely. The worst part will be renumbering all the parameters because the original designer of this template failed to follow the advice in the infobox documentation: leave gaps in the numbering!

I am willing to:

  • do the renumbering to bring gbgridref to the right place
  • provide similar support for raw latitude and longitude
  • write a bot/tool to edit all existing articles to use raw coordinates - looking at this list, two or three tests should cover the bulk of the cases, leaving a residue which can be dealt with by hand.

Shall I do it? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 22:23, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can the OS grid ref be moved up to the top section of the ibx? The template was designed so that it could be used worldwide, so the OS grid reference parameter needs to be optional. The island of Ireland uses a different grid ref system, which will also need to be catered for. Mjroots (talk) 22:43, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinates need tweaking

[edit]

I saw this and realised that in its current format there is a slight problem with the way it handles coordinates. There should be an option to allow imputing the coordinates in as dms and not only as a decimal. There needs to be a place to input the region code. Also, the scale/type should default to "landmark" which is 1:10000. Currently if you look at the Upminster Windmill using the coordinates link you get a scale of 1:300000 which shows most of London. The grid reference link is slightly better at 1:25000 but its still a little far out. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 19:43, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mapframe maps?

[edit]

{{Infobox building}} and {{Infobox shopping mall}} have both recently been updated to automatically show dynamic mapframe maps by default. I am proposing to similarly show such maps by default for this template, with the same optional parameters to adjust the size, frame center point, initial zoom level, and marker icon; and to similarly allow the mapframe map to be turned off using |mapframe=no. See Template:Infobox building#Mapframe maps and Template talk:Infobox building#Change to the map parameter so Kartographer works for further information. (FYI: I'm making similar proposal for other buildings infobox templates) - Evad37 [talk] 15:37, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Embedding Template:Infobox historic site

[edit]

Hi Would it be possible to add an |embedded parameter to this template please, so that I can add the UK listed building status, by embedding Template:Infobox historic site? Thanks Mertbiol (talk) 12:22, 19 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't load the coordinates from wikidata

[edit]

If coordinates are mentioned, use them, because wikidata is an unreliable source. KittenKlub (talk) 16:32, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
