This is SS König Albert, right? Adam Cuerden (talk) 03:52, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Certainly should be - she was an NDL liner. Is that your next project? Parsecboy (talk) 08:27, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Not next - I've found a disaster in the ACW generals. So many bad, poorly-documented, low-res photos... Think the whole area needs a cleanup. Plus, Wörth is about 90% done, likewise Shiloh, it's just both are such massive projects that I've been stalling on putting the half-day's work in each needs. SMS Scharnhorst
I don't think this made it onto Milhist's announcement page ... I know I didn't see it while it was at FAC. I'll keep an eye out for it next time. - Dank (push to talk) 23:49, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Dan - I'll probably run it again shortly after checking with Ian first, though I doubt there'll be an issue with that since it was archived due to no reviews, not objections. Parsecboy (talk) 12:12, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Help!
Recently, I spent some time in the hospital and now having a hard time catching up with latest reviewer of the FAC Mahan-class destroyer review. I wonder if you would lend me a hand once more on a few things.
This is the first one under Design. I do not agree it should be merged. But, I cannot come up with a decent response. How would you respond? "Displacement increased to 1,500 tons from 1,365 tons." this should probably be merged into the statistics in the next paragraph. I see the 1,500 figure is there already (properly with convert template
Cropping this would be a big help: Consider cropping the image at the foot of the infobox to remove the caption.
Question: How would you explain what a ship class summary is and what essentials it normally should include. And why one must review it as a summary and not as full article.
Question: In your view, should the word battles be upper or lower case? The ship took part in the Battles of the Santa Cruz Islands, Leyte Gulf, and Iwo Jima.
Thanks in advance for any help you have time to give me. Pendright (talk) 21:54, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
- Sure, I can take a look, but it will have to wait until morning - I have some family in town and my niece is asleep in the office, so no computer access for the moment! Parsecboy (talk) 23:50, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
- Understand! Pendright (talk) 00:02, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- I'm glad to hear you're doing better!
- I've cropped the caption from the photo so that's all set now.
- On the displacement issue - you might move the sentence about the increase in tonnage to the first paragraph in that section, and change it to something like "The improvements in armament [and anything else that might have been added] led to a ten percent increase in displacement over the Farraguts." You could then put the specific displacements in a footnote along the lines of "The Mahans displaced 1,500 tons compared to 1,365 tons for the Farraguts." That would allow you to keep the information in the article and satisfy Wehwalt's request. I'll ping @Wehwalt: to see if he thinks this is a good solution.
- I'd probably use lower case in that context, though I might ask Dank for his opinion too.
- I'm not quite sure what you mean with the ship class summary question. Does that refer to Nick-D's comment about the ship summaries and whether they're up to FA standard? Parsecboy (talk) 22:57, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- That sounds OK to me. Glad you are doing better.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:01, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- It is a very good compromise, except I think the word These should be substituted with either Other or Further.
- Regarding the summary question: It does not pertain to Nick D. It is a question really about what are the essential elements that should go into a summary?
- Sorry I did not get back to you. I spent most of yesterday at the hospital taking tests and what not.
- As always, thank you. Pendright (talk) 22:57, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm, in that case I think "other" or "further" would prompt readers to question what other changes were made in addition to those described. Do your sources cover those changes? Some of it might be too technical for most readers, but some things might be worth including.
- Ok, I think I know what you mean. I see the ship class articles as covering the design history (why specific choices were made and so forth, if that information is available) and specific technical information in as best a level of detail as the sources allow, with short summaries of the construction and service histories of each ship in the class. There's some gray area with regards to the level of detail that's best, since some editors prefer to include just about everything (from the displacement and engine RPMs on speed trials to the specific breakdown of standard crews) since experts will want that information and some prefer to keep the highly technical stuff to a minimum since Wikipedia is supposed to be an encyclopedia for general readers. I probably lean toward the latter category more than the former, but it's really up to you to decide what you think is useful information and what isn't.
- And no problem on taking a little while to respond, take all the time you need. If anything else should come up, let me know if you are able, so I can try to address issues raised at the review page while you're away - I'd really like to see the article promoted! Parsecboy (talk) 16:31, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
- That sounds OK to me. Glad you are doing better.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:01, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I yield to your superior judgment on the compromise. For the most part then, the standard for summaries is really in the hands of the reviewer – or so it seems. Thanks for all the useful information on the subject.
I believe I am down to about two responses to go - one of them is about the Cummings and I don’t get it. Here it is:
• "The ship operated off Okinawa during its invasion" What standard are you using to decide if battles referred to in the text should be piped to?
I expect to finish up the responses by tomorrow or Tuesday. I’m sure I’ll get questions on some of my answers. Many thanks to you for all your support and help, during the past two years, especially on this article. Regards! Pendright (talk) 01:49, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, and in large part Sturmvogel and I have set the standard for what should be included because we're the most prolific writers of these kinds of articles and we have similar opinions.
- I think Wehwalt is asking why you sometimes don't link to specific battles referenced in the text - for instance, you linked to the Battle of Iwo Jima in the previous sentence but not to the Battle of Okinawa in the one he pointed to.
- I'm glad to be able to help. Let me know if anything else comes up! By the way, I'll try to have a look at the USS Mahan article for its A-class review in the next day or two. Parsecboy (talk) 12:54, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

- Yeah, I just copy the image into Microsoft Paint and then delete the caption bar there. I'm sure there are fancier programs that allow you to do all kinds of editing, but that works well enough for me. There's a button on the image page here on Wikipedia that says "upload a new version" or something like that - once you click that there's a place to upload the cropped version and describe whatever changes you made. One thing you have to do is make sure you save it as the same file type as it was uploaded (so a file uploaded as a .jpeg has to be saved as a .jpeg). Parsecboy (talk) 20:42, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in an interview
Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in a group interview in the upcoming August issue of The Bugle with editors who work on articles concerning World War I. We're conducting this interview to mark the centenary of the war, and it forms part of a semi-regular series of interviews on thematic topics. If you're able to participate, I'd be grateful if you could post responses to the questions at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/News/August 2014/Interview by next Sunday 17 July. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 10:26, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
- Sure, I can give some answers in the next day or two. Thanks Nick! Parsecboy (talk) 16:21, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

- Funnily enough, my mind glossed over that when I read it and assumed you said by next weekend ;) Parsecboy (talk) 13:16, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of SM U-21 (Germany)
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article SM U-21 (Germany) you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of AustralianRupert -- AustralianRupert (talk) 06:41, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
I noticed that this article you helped take to GA is a list. I am concerned about this since lists aren't allowed to be Good Articles. I saw it failed its FLC before being taken to GAN first so I'm wondering if maybe it should just have its name changed. Just a thought. GamerPro64 04:01, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's apparently not long enough to be considered a "stand-alone list" by the regulars at FLC, so it's being treated as an article for assessment purposes. As for the title, I'd prefer to keep the current one so it's consistent with the other titles in the project. Parsecboy (talk) 12:12, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- All right. Though it may come under some scrutiny for it being a list with a GA tag on it in the future. But whatever works doesn't need fixing. GamerPro64 14:46, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, it has been discussed several times in the past (and so has List of battleships of Spain for the same reason). I figure that as long as someone can explain the situation, it should be fine. Parsecboy (talk) 15:12, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

I took the liberty and added some info from Koop & Schmolke. I believe these additions to be of value. Feel free to revert if you think otherwise. MisterBee1966 (talk) 11:43, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, your additions look fine to me, though I did make one small change to reduce some repetition. I'll have a look at expanding the 1945 period, probably later today. Parsecboy (talk) 12:09, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
- Sure, maybe the Hansjürgen Reinicke helps? MisterBee1966 (talk) 15:12, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Kampfgruppe Nordmeer
What do you know about this? There is an article on the German Wiki de:Kampfgruppe (Kriegsmarine). I think it would help understand the context of German naval operations. MisterBee1966 (talk) 09:47, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- I know a bit - that's a good idea. Right now, one has to read all of the articles of the ships that were involved to get a picture of what was going on. It would be better to have an overview article that discusses the operations, commanders, logistics, and so forth. What title would you recommend? Parsecboy (talk) 12:06, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- I made a small start Task Force Thiele MisterBee1966 (talk) 14:57, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I saw when you linked the article from Prinz Eugen and Deutschland/Lützow. I'd think we'd need to add sections that cover the operations the unit conducted, its logistics (bases used, tankers assigned to support if there were any, fuel shortages that I presume occurred in that late stage of the war, etc.), the major warships assigned (this could be a table with dates assigned) and probably a background section that discussed where the ships came from, the context of its creation, and so forth. It would probably also be a good idea to have a legacy section that discussed the fates of Thiele, the major warships, and potentially any impact the operations had on the strategic/operational thinking of the postwar Bundesmarine if that can be documented. Parsecboy (talk) 16:53, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Hello!
I appreciate your efforts on the cropping issue for Mahan. You certainly have a knowledgeable network. If you think I need to revisit any of my responses to your comments, please let me know. As you know, the Mahan-class article was promoted. What a birthday present - I turned 89 on August 9th. The article represents many other editors fine-tuning, but without your help there would have been no article. So, I hope a simple thank you is good enough for all that you put into it. Regards! Pendright (talk) 00:39, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, but certainly the article represents your hard work! Congratulations and Happy Birthday - what a birthday present indeed! And I look forward to seeing the Mahan article at FAC soon.
- Have you thought at all about when you'd like either article to run on the main Wikipedia page? I see that this December 7th is the 70th anniversary of Mahans loss, which would be an appropriate date. I was hoping to run SMS Scharnhorst (which is currently at FAC) on 8 December this year, since that's the centenary of her loss at the Battle of the Falkland Islands, but two warships back-to-back might be too much. Let's ask @Bencherlite: his opinion (he decides what articles appear on the main page), though he's on vacation right now so it might take a little while to hear.
- I'll have a look at the Mahan article soon and let you know if there's anything else I see. Congratulations again! Parsecboy (talk) 12:10, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Bencherlite: - you were on vacation at the time this came up, but do you have any opinion on this? I know it's a little presumptuous to ask for back-to-back warship articles, but I thought given the anniversaries (and Pendright's service aboard Mahan) this might be worthwhile. Parsecboy (talk) 14:26, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm, my instinct is that successive warships might not go down well (and Ernie Toshack, Australian cricketer, was born on 8 Dec 1914 as well, I notice, for some added competition!) but there are, as you note, strong date links and other reasons, and so as ever the answer is probably to put both up for nomination at TFAR when we get to looking at dates for early December (we're looking at dates up to early November at present) and see what people think. You might want to add them - or anything else you've got in mind - to WP:TFARP as an aide-memoire. BencherliteTalk 15:25, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm, it seems likely to me that the easiest solution is to run the Mahan article on the 7th and Toshack on the 8th (assuming the writer for that article wants to run it then), but I suppose I can nominate both at TFAR when the time comes. It had occurred to me to shift Scharnhorst to 1 Nov (the anniversary of Coronel), but I see that Doc Adams is already requested for that date. I guess we'll see what happens. Admiral Scheer
Is a disambiguation page required? I was looking for the warship; but the only article WP offered me was the admiral. Narky Blert (talk) 01:37, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- There may also be a problem in that Admiral Scheer and Admiral Scheer have different URLs but *seem* to point to the same text. Narky Blert (talk) 02:00, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) In that second case, it's because the first link is a redirect to the second. - The Bushranger One ping only 02:01, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed, the former is a redirect to the latter - if you go to the actual location for German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer, you'll see what we're talking about.
- I assume you searched for Admiral Scheer, which is a redirect to Reinhard Scheer - in that case, it seems that a hatnote like this one is appropriate. Parsecboy (talk) 12:22, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Reinicke
May I ask you to review the World War II section of the article? It currently reflects everything I have on him. Thanks MisterBee1966 (talk) 12:04, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- It looks pretty good to me. It occurs to me that there might be some more details on Cerberus that could be included, though I'm not sure if they're important enough. For instance, I assume Reinicke was with Ciliax aboard Scharnhorst, and I'd assume he went with him to Z29 when Scharnhorst was temporarily disabled by the mine strike. Also, do we know of any significant activities of Z28 while he was in command? I haven't gotten down to the destroyers, so there's nothing there to crib yet. Rohwer doesn't turn up anything in the two months Reinicke was in command, but he isn't the definitive source. Whitley's German Destroyers of World War II mentions something, but it's not viewable in Google Books. Sturmvogel has the book, I think - he might be able to add anything of interest.
- One question I have: is it Hans-Jürgen or Hansjürgen? The title is the latter but the first sentence is the former. Parsecboy (talk) 12:35, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- Good questions, I can't answer this. The sources uses both variants. HRS, Fellgiebel (among others) use Hansjürgen, KS and Dörr use Hans-Jürgen. You find both variants in the internet. MisterBee1966 (talk) 14:30, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- Looked at Whitley, nothing of note happens during his tenure in command as they're planning to move the 8th Destroyer Division to France during this period. I do have one question, though, he's a stabsoffizier and commanding Z28 simultaneously in early 1943?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 13:46, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- No, is my wording too imprecise? MisterBee1966 (talk) 14:32, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- The dates overlap, thus my confusion. His next posting was then with the Flottenkommando (Fleet Command) (6 October 1942 – 9 March 1943) where he served as 1. Admiralstabsoffizier to the chief of staff Konteradmiral August Thiele. On 17 January 1943 he took over command of destroyer Z-28 from Korvettenkapitän Hans Erdmenger. Two months later, on 11 March, he handed over the command to Fregattenkapitän Karl-Adolf Zenker
- I will double check. What do you think of the idea if we were to create an article for the Kriegsmarine similar to Organization of the Luftwaffe (1933–45)? MisterBee1966 (talk) 06:33, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- That would be good, although I think that we'd need to avoid the overly broad coverage in the LW article.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 16:41, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Could it be that Admiral Ciliax was on destroyer Hermann Schoemann and not Scharnhorst during Cerberus? MisterBee1966 (talk) 12:59, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- I nominated the article for DYK. MisterBee1966 (talk) 13:29, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- Assuming I correctly understand HRS, Ciliax and his staff started Cerberus on Scharnhorst, following the mine hit they switched to Z29, and then later to Hermann Schoemann. Do you confirm? MisterBee1966 (talk) 18:13, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Do you think he qualifies for Operation Majestic Titan (Phase IV)? MisterBee1966 (talk) 15:50, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
- I'd think probably not - the closest connection would be his role during Cerberus, but that's a little thin I think. Parsecboy (talk) 00:25, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

Article Deletion
Hello Nate, it's been a while and I hope you are well. May I ask you if it is appropriate to nominate my own page for deletion? If I'm honest, I am not that notable a person and the books that I wrote were as a co-editor, actually. So I could not call myself an author, if I'm honest. My page has been a stub for years and not likely to grow: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_McWilliams Would you be able to propose this page for deletion, with no objections from me? Or tell me how to do so, if you don't mind? My work is such that I rarely get on to edit much here these days but would hope to be more active again in future years. Much obliged, All the best, Patrick bigpad (talk) 01:25, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Patrick, good to see you're still around. I think your easiest option would be with the {{prod}} template (it's explained here) - it'll take a few days but you won't have to deal with the WP:AFD process, which would likely take longer. You just have to add a reason to delete the page, which I'll leave up to you to decide how to word.
- Let me know if there's anything else I can help with. Regards, Parsecboy (talk) 12:25, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hello again Nate and thanks for the advice. I set things up as you recommended and the page has passed the seven days without comment, if perhaps you would like to delete it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_McWilliams
Thanks for your help! I hope you're keeping ok. All the best and take care, Patrick bigpad (talk) 14:21, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
- Sure, I just deleted it. I'll see you around I'm sure :) Parsecboy (talk) 14:39, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
DYK for SM U-21 (Germany)
On 29 August 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article SM U-21 (Germany), which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the sinking of the British scout cruiser HMS Pathfinder (pictured) by the German U-boat SM U-21 in 1914 was the first time a warship was sunk by a modern submarine? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/SM U-21 (Germany). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
Hello!
I’m scheduled for cataract surgery on Sept 2nd. So, I’ll be out of commission for s short while. Yesterday, a new reviewer showed some support for the Mahan article. I can handle all of his comments, except the following one: Throughout the text, you should have "|alt=" for all of the images, to assist persons who are unable to see the images. Pendright (talk) 14:23, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
- Good luck with the surgery, hopefully everything turns out well. He's asking for alt text for screen readers - I'll take care of it in the morning. Regards, Parsecboy (talk) 19:45, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Today's Featured Article: Notification
This is to inform you that SMS Kaiser Wilhelm II , which you nominated at WP:FAC, will appear on the Wikipedia Main Page as Today's Featured Article on 14 September 2014. The proposed main page blurb is here ; you may amend if necessary. Please check for dead links and other possible faults before the appearance date. Brianboulton (talk) 23:12, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks Brian, I've made a slight correction (actually it pointed me to fixing a small error in the article itself!) Parsecboy (talk) 12:09, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
Mbunda Kingdom
Hi Parsecbody. Thanks for your suggestion to post to the COI noticeboard. I would be wasting my time posting it on the talkpage as it is frequented by no more than a handful of people, of which the two main ones initially tried to help the authoring editor and then basically just gave up. Secondly, it is not one article we are talking about, the editor has over the past year of so included Mbunda related section in a myriad articles where before the term had never been mentioned. Do you have any other suggestion of where I could post where I would reach a large number of key editors with vast experience on history issues? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. PS: I would have offered you a beer, but you deleted my post, so now I'll give it to thefirst beggar that comes along! ;-) (that's suppoed to be a smiley) Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 13:04, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- There's the Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa, though I don't know how many active editors there are there, and there's Wikipedia:WikiProject History, though I don't know how many experts on African history there are there. I'd recommend going to the COI noticeboard first, since there does appear to be a significant issue that needs to be addressed. Once that is sorted out, you can start to work with whatever experts there are available to go through Ndandulalibingi's edits and fix whatever problems there are (it seems to me that dealing with the COI problem will be the easier of the two, and it makes more sense to put a stop to the problem before doing the necessary clean up). Parsecboy (talk) 16:25, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your valuable help. I have in the meantime taken the matter to the COI noticeboard. Will wait to see what comes out of there. Regards, Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 16:45, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- Not a problem at all, let me know if there's anything else I can help with. Good luck with the COI noticeboard. Parsecboy (talk) 17:03, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

What is it that makes the contemporary Australian newspaper article is wrong and low quality?Catlemur (talk) 12:33, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
- It's a contemporary newspaper article published under the fog of war; ships are routinely misreported as having been present during specific engagements when they were nowhere near (and even better, that they were sunk during said engagements). And this is clearly what happened in this case. Academic historians should be the preferred source, since they have taken the time and energy to sort through all of the evidence and can determine best what actually happened. Parsecboy (talk) 12:45, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification.Cheers.Catlemur (talk) 13:45, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

Dimensions and displacement of Type 34A-class DDs
ÄDA - DÄP has changed some of the figures for German destroyer Z14 Friedrich Ihn and German destroyer Z15 Erich Steinbrinck based on the German edition of Gröner. I copied the descriptions from German destroyer Z16 Friedrich Eckoldt as all three were Blohm & Voss ships. He's saying that the B&V ships were slighly different than the Deschimag ones and my copy of Gröner is in storage so I can't verify it for myself; can you check to see which ones are correct?
- Yeah, I'll check tonight after work. Parsecboy (talk) 12:10, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks; I'm normally pretty good about this sort of thing and I hope that I don't have to fix the figures for all of the B&V ships.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 12:17, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Sandbox question
Thanks for updating the French armored cruisers, but it's really annoying that I can't edit individual sections of that page. Do you have any idea why it's not even an option despite the use of headers, unlike in my two other sandboxes which work as they should. I think that all three are functionally identical, but the big one doesn't work and the two smaller ones do and I can't figure out why.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 18:08, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, that had actually occurred to me when I updated the French cruisers just now - I even checked for the __nosectionedit__ code on the page. I wonder if it's just because there are too many sections? But I've never seen that happen anywhere else, so who knows? Could be a question for the technical help desk. Parsecboy (talk) 18:12, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- {{WPMILHIST Newsletter section header 2}}, used right at the bottom of your sandbox, contains a __NOEDITSECTION__. Cheers, BencherliteTalk 18:18, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- Good catch! I've fixed it. Parsecboy (talk) 18:25, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Ernest Renan
Dunno what your plans are for any other French armored cruisers, but I've earmarked Earnest Renan for partial expansion for the Stub Contest and a couple other class articles as well. All I was planning on was filling out the description and leaving the rest for later. If you want to work on her career, feel free as I don't expect that I'll have the time available and we can share the GAN, etc. You're rather more diligent in your Google Book searches than I really have time to do right now.
- I figured I'd try to knock out some of the other later cruisers - though I noticed you had added some sources to the Ernest Renan article - was actually going to suggest the same thing. You tend to have access to better technical details than I do anyway, so it works out just fine for me (speaking of that, if you have anything to add to the Edgar Quinet class article, feel free). And as for trawling through Google Books, hey, I have to do something during down time at work ;) Parsecboy (talk) 19:45, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- Cool, though I suspect that Silverstone is really the only book that I have to hand that you don't. OTOH, it's a really good resource to cross-check against Conways.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:51, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, though you're usually much better at keeping up with the Warship/Warship International/etc. articles than I am - most of them are languishing in my Amazon wishlist ;) I should probably pick up Silverstone though, since it is good to be able to check Conway's - I've found the occasional problem in the past. Parsecboy (talk) 20:14, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Mahan
The surgery on my right eye went well, and I’m scheduled for the left eye on Sept 16. Thanks so much for fixing Mahan images with |alt=. How does that assist persons who are unable to see the images? Is that something you do regularly? I was pleased to see the article was promoted; my thanks to you for making it happen. Although I did notice that the last image was not cropped or replaced. Regards! Pendright (talk) 20:26, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- I'm glad to hear the surgery went well, and best of luck for the next one! Not a problem at all with the alt text - I don't normally do it because it's generally hard to tell what's actually useful. The point of it is for screen readers - programs that read the text aloud for blind readers. If you don't have alt text, the screen reader tries to read the file name and the caption, and the file name is usually difficult for it to parse (for instance, the lead photo in the Mahan article is title "USSMahanDD364.jpeg", which is, I'd assume, difficult for the screen reader to figure out).
- As for the last image, Adam hasn't gotten around to it yet, but I'm guessing he's busy with other things at the moment. Parsecboy (talk) 20:41, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. Pendright (talk) 00:44, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- I'm doing my best. The images proved to be a lot more damaged than I had thought, so they're very slow restorations. Adam Cuerden (talk) 05:14, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting us know what the issue is, Adam - and here I was thinking you were just busy with the Wikicup! Parsecboy (talk) 11:46, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- I've been in four shows in the last month - Trial by Jury (Judge); Edinburgh Skeptics' Edinburgh Fringe Festival lecture series; The Pirates of Penzance (chorister), and, currently, a new musical based on the (possibly legendary) life of the Brahan Seer (Witchfinder Patterson and Chorus). I think other issues are more likely to be at play than the Wikicup, which I am mainlyc ompeting in by doing restorations. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 00:06, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

- I'm glad to hear the surgeries went well. Project designations vs. ships' names
Sorry, Parsecboy, but "Jade" and "Elbe" were mere project codes and not actual ships' names, and as such they conceptually line up nicely with "Weser", all three being major rivers/bays on the German North Sea coast. "Weser-1" (not "Weser") was the project name for the "Seydlitz"-conversion and appeared only in project planning documents; the ship itself was never renamed. It was still called "Seydlitz" when it was scuttled in January 1945 in Königsberg. (And it would be much appreciated, if you could stop referring to other people's contributions as nonsense.) --Cosal (talk) 22:23, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I don't have knowledge of this specific situation, but do you have any sources to back up your point? Parsec is referencing Groner, and we can only make assertions that appear in reliable sources. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 07:22, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

At some point, I plan on significantly expanding the article as I've been doing with other German warships, and the painting will more than likely be moved into the text anyway. Article for the November edition of the Bugle?
Hi, First of all, congratulations on the cruisers of Germany good topic! Secondly, would you be interested in writing an article describing how you went about completing this huge project for the November edition of the Bugle? - I'm sure that it would be of much interest to other editors. Your thoughts
G'day Nate, I haven't had much experience around GT/FT but I know you have so I was wondering if you can see any obvious reasons that a No. 90 Wing RAAF topic made up of No. 90 Wing RAAF and its two operational units during its relatively brief existence, No. 1 Squadron RAAF and No. 38 Squadron RAAF, wouldn't fit the bill? Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 09:42, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Thanks for thinking of this Ian Nick-D (talk) 09:48, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
- Heh, had a feeling you might notice that post, Nick... ;-) I thought I'd get an experienced operator's opinion before I asked you to co-nom! Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 10:15, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, that would certainly work - you could also include Frank Headlam, since he was a notable commander of the unit (and his article is already FA, so it's no more work for you!). And even better, including Headlam's article would give you the 50% FA requirement to move it up to an FT without having to wait on No. 1 Sqdn at FAC. Parsecboy (talk) 12:01, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
- Tks for that encouragement, Nate. That's an interesting thought about Headlam... I just figured that if we include a conveniently notable commanding officer, perhaps it might be asked why don't we include related articles like Avro Lincoln and Douglas Dakota as well. Maybe just going with the unit articles is simpler (even if it means waiting longer for FT) but of course be interested in Nick's opinion as well... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 13:27, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I suppose that's a possibility - the Lincoln article would probably be fairly easy to do (I say this having written exactly zero articles on aircraft, so that take for what it's worth ;) but I'd guess the Dakota article would take a lot of work even for GA. It might be best to have a more limited scope. Parsecboy (talk) 14:45, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
- Tks again, Nate -- I'll continue this at Nick's talk page to discuss the actual nom. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 23:24, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for looking at Massie citation
Thanks for looking at the Massie citation for Franz von Hipper. I see you worked on High Seas Fleet too; Could you also take a look at a stray Massie reference on that article? (I am guessing most of these would be either Dreadnought or Castles of Steel, but I am also guessing that you have the references at hand.) btw, I have been going through and eyeballing articles that refer to Massie or one of his books and making sure they have links that point back to Robert K. Massie, Dreadnought (book), etc. Thanks KConWiki (talk) 11:41, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

National ties
May I get your opinion of national ties, pertaining to the use of US versus British English please? There is a bit of a edit war going on at Heinrich Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein. I wrote the article using US English assuming that no strong national tie applies. I am not religious over the issue other than I feel that the article was reviewed multiple times and some procedure should be applied before someone changes it. What are your thoughts and what is your experience regarding the choice of language? If his line of reasoning is valid most German ships should also be written in British English. G'day Parsecboy. What say you about the reliability of navypedia.com? Thanks, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 05:25, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
- I can't see anything to show that Ivan Gogin (the operator of the site) is an acknowledged expert in the field, and there are no sources listed anywhere on the site (at least not that I can find). And something else to consider - none of the entries I looked at had any more information than the Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships series (and actually they had far less info on design and service history). There really isn't a good argument to use it, it seems. Parsecboy (talk) 12:08, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Blucher
Found fun quotes today: "The Blucher belongs to no class, would play havoc with the homogeneity of any squadron unfortunate enough to possess her, and is generally regarded as one of the most monumental mistakes to the credit of the Imperial German Admiralty." Closing sentence: "The Blucher represents about five million dollars in cash thrown into the sea—one of those little errors of judgement which the Government hushes up and honest Michael pays for." "German Naval Matters," Navy (Washington) 4, no. 3 (March 1910), 13. If you can get your hand on these journals, it'd be well worth your time. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 19:27, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

- I haven't dug too deeply into it, so I don't know how far back it goes, but it looks like it started with 90.200.1.69 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) about a month ago. 90.200.1.225 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) was also used (once). Returning user
Sorry to intrude on your talk page with an unpleasant matter. You were involved in handling the Jetwave Dave editor some years ago. There are reasons to suspect that he may also be the accounts attributed to Ctway. Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Ctway & /Archive The old accounts are relevant because there are so many copyright violations that it should be turned over to the investigations people for compete review. (I got interested because I noticed that many of the worst articles I came across in the firearms project were bad in similar ways, and then that their authors had similar characteristics.) If you have any time or inclination, your input might be helpful. If not, I understand - you've already dealt with a lot of this crap. Rezin (talk) 02:46, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
- Dollars to donuts they're the same individual. PrcsnV (listed as a sock in the Ctway archive) created TKB-059, which is basically the same article that caused the dispute that ended with Jetwave being banned. It doesn't take a lot of digging to see the WP:DUCK. Parsecboy (talk) 13:06, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Agordats
Still troubled by the 300-nmi range quoted for the Agordats by Conways and so checked Faccaroli's book on Italian Warships of WWI. It quotes 3000 nmi on p. 48 which seems far more reasonable than 30 hours of steaming at a mere 10 knots. The comment in Conways about the short range would still be relevant as it says that they were too short ranged at speed which implies that their coal consumption climbed sharply as their speed increased.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:28, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think you're right - had a look at a map and 300 nmi wouldn't have even allowed the ship to cross the Med to Libya. I'll fix it later, thanks for looking it up. Parsecboy (talk) 19:49, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
- You're welcome; I just started thinking about how often you'd have to recoal. Which is like every single day you're underway.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 20:53, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Chinese "battleships"
I'm getting ready to start the class article on these two ships as you suggested. But I'm wondering if I should use the Wade-Giles spelling as used in Conways and the Chinese Steam Navy or use the modern Pinyin with a redirect. What do you think?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 20:10, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
- Heh, I was thinking about starting that article tonight, but if you'd rather do it that's fine by me. I'd go with Pinyin since Wade-Giles isn't used much anymore - Conway's is a bit dated in that regard and Wright has a line about why he went with Wade-Giles with Pinyin in parentheses - I don't recall specifically why that was but I wasn't convinced when I read it. Parsecboy (talk) 20:38, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
- Pinyin it is then. All I plan on doing is my usual skeleton with a lead sentence, infobox and sources. You'd be entirely welcome to fill in the text. I got discouraged just looking at the individual ship articles as they pretty much need a total overhaul to bring them up to standard.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 20:56, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, they're in pretty rough shape, but I figured with their participation in the FSJW there's potential for decent articles - besides, I need something to trawl through Google Books for now that the Italian protected cruisers are pretty well in hand (and, I could use a break from them at the moment anyway). I'll see about adding to the class article tonight. Parsecboy (talk) 21:03, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
- Oh, they're eminently salvageable; I just didn't feel like doing the grunt work. I've also updated the infoboxes of the individual ship articles using Wright as my preferred source. Considerably newer than Conway's, I figure it's more reliable for all Chinese ships. And they've got a large assortment of cruisers of various types if you feel like continuing on with that type as opposed to the later German destroyers or anything else.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 22:04, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've thought about doing the larger Chinese warships at some point or other - and I agree on using Wright as the default. Parsecboy (talk) 23:34, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Parsecboy, user Oceanh nominated a group of articles you created, including at least one that had recently become a GA, for DYK (Did You Know). The nomination's hook needs a clarification, and you were pinged from the template, but pings don't always work from templates so I thought I'd post here directly. Without your assistance, it seems unlikely that the nomination will succeed. I hope you are willing to assist, but if not please let us know so we can proceed with the process. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:40, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, congratulations with the seven GAs for the Regioni-class cruisers. I nominated all seven for DYK (see nomination template). For the proposed hook to be accepted, there has to be an inline citation for the hook fact in each article, immediately after the fact. I guess that the 1979 book by Gardiner supports the fact, but needs assistance from you (or someone who has access to the book) to check/verify this. If you can confirm that the book supports the fact (with page number(s)), I can insert the inline citations to each of the articles. The proposed hook goes like this: ... that the Italian cruisers Umbria, Lombardia, Etruria (pictured), Liguria, Elba and Puglia all belonged to the Regioni class? Notability and best practice
Is this some rule you military history projects english language wikipedians have decided to have? It seems to me, reading e.g. the relevant German language article, that the German language wikipedians don't seem to agree. It also seems to me that providing a history of the commanders of a warship is not a minor thing, that it's instead an important part of its history; a very relevant thing to include; I imagine, for example, how happy the (military or other) historians all over the world would be, were they to have such an archive and repository of knowledge available free of charge (both to create and access)...
PS In this case it might also, speaking about how I've come to read and edit this article, help rectify the state of various articles I've found on the anglophone net referring to Winkler as KK (or K.K.) Winkler, i.e. to show that KK is a rank, not name initials. Thanatos|talk|contributions 13:15, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- Editors at de.wiki are of course free to write articles as they please, but through repeated (and lengthy) discussions at WT:SHIPS, we here at en.wiki have decided that such lists aren't particularly useful. If a particular commander is notable, he should be written into the text of the article. Parsecboy (talk) 13:33, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- 1.Thanx for the reply. 2.So is it a rule, however unreasonable it seems to me, which has been decided by voting and which could be found somewhere set on wiki-stone? Or are we talking about some vague thing? I can't go through all 42 archived talk-pages of the project... ;-) Thanatos|talk|contributions
- Nor can I ;) suffice it to say, nothing on wikipedia is set in stone, but the general consensus that has emerged over years of dicussion is that these sorts of tables are not helpful to the reader. The individuals are in the vast majority of cases non-notable. The basic premise is this: Wikipedia is not a collection of all possible information on a given topic, but an encyclopedia that should be written in summary style. We are here for general readers; specialists have better sources to consult. Parsecboy (talk) 17:45, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- 1.a.The stone set rule question was obviously hyperbolic; there are no such stones but there are, as you certainly know, things like wiki rules, guidelines, MOS, etc, to invoke... b. Anyway it's a vague customary thing, got it. c. It doesn't matter much to me to actively object and fight against, let alone about such an issue; I get mad with and fighting against wiki-legalisms that have been more or less explicitly written down, I would get especially so fighting vague customary ones. But I have to say that this imo sucks... 2. In my view, even if we exclude specialists (and/or nerds), the general reader, if there is indeed such a (populous) entity on such a topic/article :) , might in fact want to know who the captains of a/the ship were; it's not the history of the exact shade or hue of the colours the ship was painted in we're talking about, it's the captains for god's sake... But again, OK, got it.
Thanx for your replies.
PS FYI, I won't be adding to the article, at least any time soon, the Winkler stuff; apart perhaps from something like a see also addition, having a sentence or two in the present structure and form of the article about such a topic would seem out of place to me (given also and among other things facts like the absence of an article dedicated to Winkler and his work (=in essence the latter)).

- Except for my eyes, I’m doing pretty well - thanks. BTW, I notice a red help indicator on Mahan references? I think it’s a reference that you added. Would you have time to take a look?
- I also notice that Mahan is still labeled as a GA, not an A-class article. Any sugestions? Pendright (talk) 16:40, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- Sure - the citation for Morison's book was a bit mixed up, but I've fixed it. As for the rating, yes, that's how it works. The A-class review is more or less confined to wikiprojects like WP:MILHIST and WP:SHIPS. For some reason (that I do not understand), we have two, semi-overlapping article rating systems, the B and A classes done by wikiprojects and the GA and FA classes, which have external reviews. Most A-class articles are also GAs (assuming that the author submitted it for both levels). Parsecboy (talk) 17:20, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the fix and the explanation. Off hand, do you think Mahan could hold up under a FC review, or does it need some fine tuning first? Pendright (talk) 22:10, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think so - go ahead and nominate it! Parsecboy (talk) 23:50, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
