- The result of the discussion was: purge; no consensus on merging (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 16:46, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
- Propose upmerging Category:Video games by island country of setting (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Video games by country of setting
- Propose upmerging Category:Video games by island country of setting (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Video games by country of setting
- Nominator's rationale: Given that we have Category:Video games by country of setting, this is a non-defining characteristic for the categories it contains. UnitedStatesian (talk) 14:47, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Upmerge to Category:Video games by country of setting as non-defining and unnecessary diffusion. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 15:39, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose as this is part of Category:Island countries in fiction; this category should not be picked off without also discussing the siblings for novels, films and TV shows. – Fayenatic London 09:59, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- Upmerge. per nom. ―MattLongCT -Talk-☖ 19:04, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

- Relisting comment @UnitedStatesian, Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars, and MattLongCT: after the procedural oppose of User:Fayenatic london I have taken the liberty to add the following categories to the nomination:
- Propose upmerging Category:Films by island country of setting to Category:Films by country of setting
- Propose upmerging Category:Novels by island country of setting to Category:Novels by country of setting
- Propose upmerging Category:Television shows by island country of setting to Category:Television shows by country of setting
- Propose upmerging Category:Island countries in fiction to Category:Countries in fiction
- - Marcocapelle (talk) 20:37, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Upmerge as it makes no sense to categorize a book etc that has nothing to do with islands apart from being set in an island country (e.g. The Railway Children) in Category:Islands in fiction. Alternatively, have a complete categorization scheme - Novels set in landlocked countries, TV shows set in monarchies, Films set in countries that have active volcanoes, ... (only joking). DexDor (talk) 07:30, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose again; thanks for relisting with siblings, but these nominated categories are part of Category:Islands in fiction, Category:Films set on islands, Category:Novels set on islands, Category:Television shows set on islands and Category:Video games set on islands (and there is also Category:Comics set on islands). The part of the category for uninhabited islands is strongly defining. Fiction set on small islands shares a significant element of setting, within Category:Locations in fiction and Category:Works by setting, whether in e.g. the Caribbean or the Channel Isles. Clearly, this is less defining for larger islands, but any size-related cut-off would be arbitrary, hence the hierarchy contains all islands. These categories do not create clutter on articles, as articles are only categorised by country. – Fayenatic London 14:48, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
- What has "uninhabited islands" got to do with this CFD? Isn't the distinction between an island and a continent arbitrary anyway? These categories may not add category clutter on articles, but they do add unnecessary complexity to the category structure and in particular are an example of the sort of thing that impedes the use of category intersection as they cause categories such as Category:Films set in Oxford and Category:Films set in Rhodesia to be in Category:Islands. DexDor (talk) 20:11, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
- I mentioned the "uninhabited islands" part of this hierarchy to make sure nobody proposes nuking the entire structure as non-defining.
- Can you find a more convincing example of a category intersection problem caused by these categories? The examples that you gave are both within Category:Films set in the United Kingdom (because "British Empire" is within "UK") – which is within Category:British Isles, so they would will still be within Category:Islands anyway, even if these nominated "fiction by island country" categories are deleted. – Fayenatic London 23:24, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
- There may be more than one problem in the category structure. Articles about Rhodesia should not generally be in Category:British Isles (and hence in Category:Europe). DexDor (talk) 15:29, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

- Keep, but purge the whole Category:Island countries in fiction of categories for anything other than small islands.
- e.g.
- Category:Films set in the Falkland Islands — island is WP:DEFINING
- Category:Films set on the Isle of Man — a bit less defining
- Category:Films set in Ireland — even less defining
- Category:Films set in New Zealand — like Ireland
- Category:Films set in the United Kingdom — v rarely defining
- Category:Films set in Japan — v rarely defining
- Category:Films set in Australia — Silly. it's usually defined as a continent

- I'm inclined to support this, even though it would make this group of categories inconsistent with the parent Islands hierarchy. A category explanation should then state the scope as fiction for which the island location of setting is WP:Defining. – Fayenatic London 23:24, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
- The defining characteristics of an article such as Tumbledown include that it's a film about the Falklands War; that it's set on an island is incidental (e.g. the article doesn't use the word "island"). It wouldn't be put directly in Category:Islands in fiction so it shouldn't be put indirectly in that category. Similarly, few, if any, of the films in Category:Films set in Dublin (city) belong under Category:Islands. A country may have many characteristics (e.g. being a monarchy, being in the EU, being in the G20), but in most cases that's not directly relevant to novels etc set in it - e.g. Germany is categorized in Category:German-speaking countries and territories, but we don't put every film set in Germany in a Films-set-in-German-speaking-countries etc category; we categorize by more relevant characteristics (including the language of the film). - The result of the discussion was: merge Category:Theories of economics to Category:Schools of economic thought. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:39, 10 March 2019 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: delete per WP:OVERLAPCAT, we already have a category like this, it is called Category:Schools of economic thought. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:13, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Merge These are clearly one category and the main article is Schools of economic thought so we should follow that naming convention. RevelationDirect (talk) 22:49, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Merge I didn't notice the category Schools of economic thought. Let us merge. Jean Julius Vernal 17:04, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: delete. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:24, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: A single use small cat used in a redirect for a former pilot that flew with the Red Arrows aerobatic team, not a particularly defining category and we dont normally categorise pilots lower than service level and not at unit or team level. MilborneOne (talk) 13:51, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:C1 as essentially empty: one redirect to an article that's already in Category:Red Arrows. (No objection if anyone wants to create a hidden redirect category.) RevelationDirect (talk) 23:00, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: merge. I am personally not sure this is a good idea, but consensus is clear. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:19, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Arab Moroccans to Category:Moroccan people of Arab descent
- Nominator's rationale: up/downmerge, these are two categories with the same scope, nicely illustrated by the fact that the target is parent category and subcategory at the same time. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:23, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Support, per my earlier comments here. I'd quite like to see Category:Arabs in Morocco merged in as well. Furius (talk) 22:26, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Category:Arabs in Morocco is a more general category about Arab diaspora, not only containing a subcategory of people but also (in this case) subcategories about language and about tribes. It is part of a series in Category:Arabs in North Africa. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:58, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
- Support This is the typical format for ethnicity categories. Dimadick (talk) 09:37, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
- Support -- The converse to this is Category:Moroccan people of Berber descent, though I suspect that the distinction is largely one of language, rather than strictly of ethnicity. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:00, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
- In fact the converse is Category:Berber Moroccans. But Berber Moroccans may make more sense than Berber descent since Berbers were the more original inhabitants of Morocco. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:54, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: All the articles are timelines of healthcare Rathfelder (talk) 10:22, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Support, all articles of this category have "healthcare" in the title. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:10, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:Pope Pius XII encyclicals to Category:Encyclicals of Pope Pius XII
- Nominator's rationale: consistency with Category:Encyclicals of Pope Leo XIII and Category:Encyclicals of Pope Francis Nowak Kowalski (talk) 10:01, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
