[edit]From Spanish Sanibel, from San Nibel. from Santa Ybel, from santa+Isabella. From being named after Queen Isabella I of Castille and Saint Elizabeth (Santa Isabella), the mother of John the Baptist.
The city is named after the island upon which it sits. From Spanish Puerto de Sanibel, from Puerto de San Nibel.
