[edit]By pre-cluster shortening from Middle High German sēnse, itself by Central German monophthongisation from seinse, itself by pre-alveolar contraction (compare Getreide, verteidigen etc.) from segense, from Old High German segansa, itself by metathesis from segisna, from Proto-West Germanic *sagisnu. Cognate with Dutch zeis.
