Sicilian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly from Old Sicilian *cummoliu, from cu + *mmoliu, from Vulgar Latin *involium, back-formation of Vulgar Latin *involeō, ultimately from involvo. Cf. also Latin volō > Vulgar Latin voleō > Sicilian vogghiu.

Compare also the verb cummigghiari, where it has — not following the normal Sicilian phonology — changed the "o" into "i". Compare eventually also Italian convoglio.
