Etymology
[edit]Provided the etymology proposed by Vasmer[1] is correct: from Russian кандалы́ (kandalý), ultimately from Arabic قَيْدَان (qaydān), dual form of Arabic قَيْد (qayd, “fetter, chain, bond”); thus, a doublet of qeyd (“registration”). Ukrainian кайдани (kajdany) and Polish kajdany preserve the original /j/.
