Synopsis for "Fear Grows in Brooklyn!"

Brief Summary

While encountering organized crime in Brooklyn, Captain America runs into the Punisher. These two individuals clash, as their methods of combating crime are very dissimilar, the Punisher having no qualms about killing mob members. The mobsters are eventually defeated and taken into custody, but the Punisher escapes.

Detailed Summary

Captain America foils what appears to be a common mugging. Afterward, the police inform him that the men he caught are muscle for the mob and it was likely a squabble between rival groups. Captain America changed back into his civilian clothes and calls a taxi so he won't miss his appointment. The supposed victim of the crime emerges from where he was hiding and finds a room to rent.

Steve makes his appointment at Non-Parallel Publications only five minutes late, and he's disappointed by how small and run down the place seems. The woman he's interviewing with criticizes his war drawings, but she insists he take the job because no one else will work for the rate she's offering. Steve returns to his apartment, but he's interrupted by the screams of Mrs. Kapplebaum. She confesses to Steve that she had a shock because she believed she had seen a Nazi out the window, reminding her of her time in a Nazi death camp.

Steve gets to work on his drawings, but he hears the distinct sound of a rifle. He changes into his Captain America uniform and pursues the culprit. Cap tackles the Punisher just as he's about to shoot to shoot the man that Cap had saved previously. The Punisher argues with Captain America, explaining that the man is an underworld courier that has information about a meeting place between rival mob bosses. Having already gotten the information, the Punisher shoots the courier. Cap stays with the courier, who tells him where the meeting is set to take place.

After getting help for the courier, Cap runs across the city to arrive at the water tower, within which the mob bosses and their bodyguards are meeting in a secret room. He finds the Punisher applying plastic explosive to the tower and throws his shield to knock the detonator out of the Punisher's hands. The two fight, but they draw the attention of the mob. Cap pulls them both behind his shield, and the two work together to defeat their adversaries. Punisher gets his hands on the detonator, but he can't bring himself to use it while Cap is in the blast zone.

One of the mob bodyguards draws a gun and a badge and places the Punisher under arrest. The Punisher surrenders without a fight and Cap scolds him, as he would have killed an undercover police officer if his plan had succeeded. The Punisher throws aside the detonator, but does so in a way that causes it to trigger, and the Punisher escapes as everyone is distracted by the blast.
